Misophonia is unusually strong distress in response to particular sounds or related cues—not simply disliking loud noise. Chewing, breathing, tapping, and other triggers can provoke emotional, physical, or behavioral reactions, but patterns and severity vary. A research consensus definition exists; it is not a formal diagnostic standard. If reactions are making daily life difficult, a qualified health professional can help assess what is happening and discuss ways to cope.
What is misophonia?
The Misophonia Consensus Committee’s 2022 working definition describes misophonia as “decreased tolerance to specific sounds or stimuli associated with such sounds.” The response is linked to a sound’s particular pattern or personal meaning, rather than merely how loud it is. Triggers can bring strong negative emotional, physiological, and behavioral responses that are not typical of most people. The committee’s definition also recognizes that symptoms can cause distress or interfere with social, occupational, or academic life, and that severity varies. That definition is a research consensus, not a formal diagnosis. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) describes misophonia as a chronic condition involving distressing reactions to specific sound triggers, while noting that it is not formally recognized as a neurological or psychiatric disorder. Ordinary irritation at noise, by itself, does not establish misophonia. The APA explains misophonia and its current recognition status.

What are common misophonia triggers?
Auditory triggers are reported most often, but visual triggers are also described. Common examples include:
#1 Best Overall
- Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling: 2 internal and 2 external mics work in tandem to detect external noise and effectively reduce up to 90% of it, no matter in trains or offices.
- Immerse Yourself in Detailed Audio: The noise cancelling headphones have oversized 40mm dynamic drivers that produce detailed sound and thumping beats with BassUp technology for your every travel, commuting and gaming. Compatible with Hi-Res certified audio via the AUX cable for more detail.
- 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
- Eating and mouth sounds: chewing, lip smacking, slurping, and swallowing.
- Breathing and throat sounds: breathing, sniffing, coughing, and throat clearing.
- Repetitive or environmental sounds: pen clicking, keyboard typing, tapping, shuffling footsteps, and clock ticking.
- Other sounds: animal sounds and other noises that may be highly specific to an individual.
- Visual cues: leg swinging, knuckle cracking, or watching someone eat.
These examples are not a checklist: one person may react to a sound or cue that does not bother someone else, and a person’s own trigger pattern may not match common examples. The consensus paper describes individual variation in the sounds and associated stimuli people report.
What reactions can misophonia cause?
Responses differ from person to person and may involve several kinds of reaction:
Rank #2
- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
- Emotional: anger, disgust, annoyance, irritation, panic, or shame.
- Physical: sweating, a faster heart rate, or muscle tension.
- Behavioral: covering the ears, leaving, avoiding situations where triggers may occur, asking someone to stop, or mimicking the trigger.
Some people also find it difficult to shift attention away from a trigger. When reactions disrupt relationships, school, work, or social activities, the impact can extend beyond the moment the sound occurs.
How is misophonia diagnosed?
There is no formal diagnostic criteria set established by the 2022 consensus paper. The committee’s work was to define misophonia, not to create a clinical diagnostic guideline. It also noted that many questionnaires and diagnostic checklists have not been psychometrically validated, so a score or checklist should not be treated as a definitive diagnosis.

Assessment needs to consider whether symptoms are better explained by auditory, psychological, or psychiatric disorders. At the same time, the condition’s causes and relationships with other conditions remain unclear. The consensus paper does not establish a known cause, genetic explanation, or single diagnostic pathway. It also cautions against relying on one prevalence estimate: studies have used differing definitions and measurement tools, and the committee considered a prevalence figure premature.

Consider talking with a qualified health professional if reactions cause substantial distress or interfere with relationships, school, work, social activities, or other parts of daily life. A professional can discuss your symptoms, consider co-occurring or alternative explanations, and help you weigh coping options. The available sources do not prescribe one universal specialty or referral route.

What coping approaches may help?
The APA suggests approaches that some people may find useful. They are coping options, not established cures, and the sources do not show that one method or product works best for everyone.

- Adjust the environment when practical: Identify or create spaces with fewer triggers, while considering whether avoiding situations limits activities you want or need to take part in.
- Try sound protection or other audio: Earplugs, noise-canceling headphones, or pleasant or distracting audio may help some people. Suitability depends on the setting and the individual; sound protection is not appropriate in every situation.
- Address distress and general wellbeing: The APA also mentions support for underlying mental-health issues, mindfulness, relaxation, and general wellbeing.
Because triggers and circumstances differ, consider options by whether they reduce distress for you, feel comfortable, and let you participate in daily activities. The APA’s overview is available at Misophonia: When Certain Sounds Trigger Emotional Distress.
