A mirrorless camera has no DSLR-style reflex mirror: its imaging sensor receives light and provides the live image used for electronic viewing. That design is the category’s defining trait—not a promise of a particular sensor size, viewfinder, autofocus quality, video mode, or body weight. Compare those features on the exact models you are considering.
What makes a camera mirrorless?
In a DSLR, a reflex mirror redirects light toward an optical viewfinder and moves out of the way for a photo. A mirrorless camera removes that mirror-and-optical-viewfinder path. Light reaches the imaging sensor, whose data is used to capture the image and provide an electronic view through an electronic viewfinder (EVF), if the camera has one, or on the rear display.

Fujifilm explains its system this way: “Autofocus (AF) is performed with the same digital sensor that captures the image, so there’s no discrepancy between what you see and what you get.” That describes Fujifilm’s explanation of its design; it is not a comparative test result for every camera. Fujifilm’s mirrorless camera overview also describes composition through an EVF or viewscreen.
What traits are common—and what is not guaranteed?
- No reflex mirror: This is the defining difference from a DSLR’s optical-viewfinder design.
- Electronic viewing: The live sensor feed can appear in an EVF or on the rear screen. Some bodies have an EVF; others rely on the screen.
- Interchangeable lenses are common: Many mirrorless cameras use interchangeable lenses, but mount compatibility depends on the specific body, lens, and any adapter.
- Sensor-based autofocus: Modern mirrorless designs can use the imaging sensor for autofocus, but tracking and subject recognition vary by model.
“Mirrorless” does not identify one sensor format or a standard feature bundle. It does not guarantee in-body image stabilization (IBIS), a silent shutter, a particular video resolution, or a specific level of autofocus performance. Treat those as model-by-model questions.

What the electronic preview can show
Because the display or EVF can show a live sensor feed, some mirrorless cameras let you preview exposure before taking a picture. Nikon Australia describes “real-time exposure preview in the electronic viewfinder” among capabilities enabled by the design. Whether a particular body provides a useful preview, how it behaves, and what overlays it offers depend on that model. Nikon Australia’s mirrorless camera explainer discusses the design’s potential, not a guarantee that every camera includes every feature.
Check the candidate camera for the viewing tools you need. These may include a histogram, focus peaking, an electronic level, or zebra patterns, but they are not universal. Also consider whether you prefer composing through an EVF or a rear display and whether the screen’s articulation and touch controls suit your work.

How to compare mirrorless cameras
When choosing between models, compare the complete system and your intended use—not just the category label.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck the lens mount and system
Confirm which native lenses fit the body. If you want to reuse an existing lens, verify the exact lens, camera body, and adapter combination, including which functions remain available. Mount names are not interchangeable across brands or systems. Canon’s guide, for example, distinguishes RF, EF, EF-S, and EF-M mounts; its EF-EOS R adapter information applies to specified Canon combinations, not to lenses generally. Canon’s lens mount guide explains those system distinctions, and Canon’s EF-EOS R adapter page covers that specific adapter.

Match sensor format to your needs
Mirrorless cameras come in different sensor formats. Consider the image output you need alongside lens size and low-light priorities; the word “mirrorless” alone does not tell you which format is best for your use.
Try the viewfinder and screen experience
Check whether a model has an EVF, how its rear screen moves, whether it supports touch controls, and whether its exposure preview and overlays are helpful for your work. Do not assume that two cameras in the same broad category offer the same viewing experience.

- DIGIC X Image Processor with an ISO range of 100-102400, expandable to 204800
- High-speed continuous shooting of up to 12 fps with mechanical shutter and up to 40 fps electronic (silent) shutter, RAW burst mode and pre-shooting captures up to approx. 30 fps

Evaluate autofocus on your subject
Look for performance information about the exact model and the subjects you photograph—such as people, wildlife, or sports. On-sensor autofocus is a design capability, not a guarantee that all mirrorless cameras track moving subjects equally well.

Check whether the body has in-body stabilization, whether your lens provides optical stabilization, and how the camera handles electronic or silent shutter operation. Verify the video modes you need on the specific model. None of these features follows automatically from the term “mirrorless.”
Compare whole-kit size and cost
Removing the mirror mechanism can allow a shallower body design, and manufacturers often describe mirrorless bodies as smaller or lighter. That is a design tendency, not a guarantee about every camera kit. Compare the body with the lenses and accessories you would actually carry: lens size, sensor format, battery, grip, and other equipment all affect the complete setup.

The label tells you that the camera does not use a DSLR-style reflex mirror and optical-viewfinder path. It leaves the important buying details open: sensor format, EVF availability, display behavior, mount compatibility, autofocus performance, stabilization, shutter options, video capabilities, and kit size.
