Identity is a critical access boundary in cloud and remote-work environments: an attacker who gets a valid account or session may use ordinary services and permissions rather than deploy an obviously malicious file. That makes credential protection essential—but it does not make firewalls, endpoint security or network controls obsolete. The practical response is to strengthen authentication, limit what each identity can do, protect sessions and watch for suspicious identity activity.
Why identity has become a security boundary
Traditional network defenses often treated the office network as a meaningful trust boundary. Cloud services, remote work and distributed devices make location a less reliable signal: users and workloads reach services from many places, and access is mediated by accounts, credentials, devices and sessions. As TechTarget’s overview of why identity is now the core attack surface explains, identity has moved closer to the center of security decisions.

“Identity is the perimeter” is useful shorthand, not a claim that the network perimeter has disappeared. Access control now needs to account for who or what is connecting, what it is allowed to do, and whether the device and session meet policy. Firewalls and endpoint defenses remain part of a layered approach.
How credential-based intrusions work
Credential-based intrusions begin when an attacker obtains or abuses a way to act as an identity. Common routes include phishing, reusing passwords exposed in another breach, spraying commonly used passwords across accounts, or stealing credentials and session material from a compromised device. These are different paths, and no single defense blocks all of them.

If a service accepts the account or session, the attacker’s potential reach depends on that identity’s permissions and the service’s access controls. Where permissions or authentication boundaries allow it, an attacker may seek additional privileges or move between services. This is a possible progression, not a sequence every intrusion follows.
A stolen password is not the same as a stolen session
A password is one way to authenticate. A session token can represent a sign-in that has already succeeded. Microsoft’s token protection guidance describes token theft as a way to replay a valid proof of identity; in the relevant scenarios, that can avoid triggering a fresh authentication challenge. Changing the password is not, by itself, a reliable way to neutralize a stolen session. Session revocation and other response steps depend on the identity platform and incident circumstances.

Strengthen authentication against phishing
Require multifactor authentication (MFA), especially for remote access and privileged or administrative access. But MFA methods are not equally resistant to phishing or interception. CISA advises businesses to aim for phishing-resistant MFA, and Microsoft recommends it for privileged administrator roles. Microsoft’s Entra documentation notes: “Accounts with privileged administrative roles are frequent targets of attackers.”
Microsoft documents FIDO2 security keys and passkeys among phishing-resistant options, alongside Windows Hello for Business and certificate-based authentication in its guidance. A security key is a category, not a guarantee of compatibility: before buying one, check support for your identity provider and account type, device connectors, organization policy, and backup and recovery options. The documentation identifies supported method categories; it does not provide a neutral head-to-head ranking of them.

Plan enrollment and recovery before enforcing a new method. Microsoft warns administrators to register appropriate authentication methods before enabling a policy; otherwise, they may lock themselves out. Test the policy with the intended roles and accounts, and establish a recovery route before broad rollout.
Limit administrator access and its duration
Apply least privilege: give each user, service and application only the permissions needed for its work. Avoid leaving powerful administrator rights permanently active when they are not needed. Microsoft describes using Privileged Identity Management (PIM) to manage eligible privileged role assignments and activate them just in time, so elevated access is available for a defined need rather than standing by default. See Microsoft’s PIM configuration guidance.

Review who can activate each role and what approval or authentication requirements apply. A just-in-time workflow reduces standing exposure, but it still needs careful assignment, monitoring and a workable emergency-access plan.

Authentication is only one part of an access decision. Microsoft Entra Conditional Access lets administrators apply policies that can require stronger authentication based on factors such as role and sign-in context. Use policies to raise the bar for sensitive actions and privileged accounts, while testing for legitimate access needs and recovery scenarios.

Token protection policies can bind supported sign-in tokens to devices, reducing the usefulness of replay from unauthorized endpoints in supported scenarios. This is not universal token binding for every service or device: check Microsoft’s current scenario and platform limits before relying on it.
Secure service identities and credentials
Human accounts are only part of the identity surface. Inventory service identities, application registrations, API credentials and automation accounts, then review their permissions and credential use. Microsoft recommends moving user-based automation to workload identities where appropriate and reviewing stale privileged identities. Scope these identities narrowly, remove access that is no longer needed, and include them in regular lifecycle reviews.
Monitor identity activity
Monitoring should help surface activity that does not fit an account’s normal pattern. Useful events to review include unusual sign-ins, unexpected registration of an authentication method, unplanned privileged-role activation and access inconsistent with the account’s usual context. Microsoft’s guidance emphasizes identity and authentication-method monitoring; what counts as unusual depends on the organization’s users, services and baseline, so thresholds should be set for the environment rather than guessed.

Put the controls together
Credential defense works best as layers. A sensible implementation order is:
- Require MFA. Prioritize phishing-resistant methods for privileged roles and remote access, and prepare enrollment and recovery before enforcement.
- Reduce privilege. Review administrator assignments, remove unnecessary access and use just-in-time activation where appropriate.
- Apply context-aware policies. Use Conditional Access for stronger authentication on sensitive access, and enable token protection only for supported scenarios.
- Include workloads. Inventory nonhuman identities and credentials, scope their permissions and remove stale access.
- Monitor and respond. Review sign-in, authentication-method and role-activation activity, with response procedures suited to your identity platform.
No single control closes every route: MFA does not eliminate stolen-session risk, and session protections do not correct excessive permissions. Pairing authentication and privilege controls with device and session context, lifecycle hygiene and monitoring makes a compromised identity less likely to be obtained and less powerful if it is.
