Choose Miro if your planning begins with shared visual exploration—such as brainstorming, mapping, diagramming, or a workshop. Choose monday.com if the priority is turning plans into assigned work, tracking status and dependencies, and reporting progress across boards or projects. Both can support visual planning; the better fit depends on how your team works after ideas are generated.
How the two products organize planning
Miro describes itself as a visual workspace for collaboration, with workflows such as customer journey mapping, diagramming, and sprint planning. Its organizing surface is an open canvas, suited to arranging and connecting ideas visually. See Miro’s product overview for its stated positioning and examples.

monday.com centers work around customizable boards for organizing and tracking tasks or workflows. Its platform also includes workdocs for longer-form planning and documentation, WorkForms for structured intake, multiple board views, templates, and dashboards. For initiatives that need more defined project structure, monday.com offers a separate project layer. Its platform overview describes the broader set of work-management tools.
That distinction is a useful starting point, not a hard boundary: Miro has execution-oriented features, and monday.com boards can support collaboration. The practical question is whether your team needs a flexible shared canvas first or a structured system for managing work.

Which fits your team’s planning workflow?
| Planning need | Miro | monday.com |
|---|---|---|
| Open-ended brainstorming and mapping | Its canvas is designed for visual collaboration. Miro’s own comparison page highlights brainstorming and visualizing complex systems as use cases; that is vendor positioning, not an independent test. Miro’s comparison page | Boards can be configured for collaboration, but how well they support open-ended ideation depends on the team’s setup. monday.com’s board documentation |
| Facilitated workshops | The pricing page lists features including a timer, voting, private mode, and notes. Check the current plan details to confirm availability. Miro pricing | Boards, views, forms, templates, and dashboards can support planning and collaboration. The cited product documentation does not position monday.com primarily as a workshop canvas. monday.com platform overview |
| Turning ideas into assigned work | Miro documents data tables and two-way integrations on paid tiers. Check the current plan and connected-app support for the handoff your workflow needs. Miro pricing | Boards and projects organize work in a more structured format, with features such as owners, status, and—in projects—predefined fields and project reporting. When Miro is the better fit
Choose Miro when the planning session itself is visual and exploratory: people need to map a journey, sketch a system, arrange concepts, or work together on a shared canvas before the eventual tasks are fully defined. Its official overview names journey mapping, diagramming, and sprint planning among its examples. Those are vendor-described use cases, not independently measured advantages.
If facilitation matters, check whether the current plan includes the specific workshop tools you need, such as voting, a timer, private mode, or notes. If ideas must then become tracked work elsewhere, confirm that the paid-tier data tables or two-way integrations support your apps and handoff process.

When monday.com is the better fit
Choose monday.com when plans need to become structured, assigned work that a team can monitor and report on. Boards provide a configurable way to track tasks and workflows; projects add a more defined layer with predefined columns, a project overview, health status, and reporting. monday.com explains the distinction in its board and project documentation.

monday.com’s project-management guide describes a workflow that includes intake and approval, an overview board, template-generated project boards, dependencies, resource management, and dashboards. Treat those as vendor-documented capabilities rather than a guarantee that every feature is included in every plan. Check the project-management guide alongside current plan details.
Check the plan and price before committing
Feature availability is not identical across plans, and prices can vary by billing locale, billing frequency, and seat count. The captured monday.com pricing page displayed a free option for up to two seats and three boards, as well as Euro pricing; that snapshot should not be treated as a universal offer. Miro’s pricing page likewise lists plan-specific capabilities, and its displayed prices may depend on locale and billing terms. Check Miro’s current pricing and feature details. Compare the two only after matching geography, billing frequency, number of seats, plan scope, and required features. A lower entry price is not useful if the plan lacks a necessary integration, workshop tool, dependency feature, or portfolio view.
Run a fair pilot with the same planning task
Before adopting either product, test the same representative workflow in both. Avoid judging one in a brainstorming session and the other only on its task board: include the handoff from ideas to execution.

- Choose a real planning exercise. Use a project your team understands, with both an exploratory stage and concrete follow-up work.
- Try the visual work. Compare how comfortably the team can brainstorm, map relationships, and facilitate discussion.
- Follow ideas into execution. Record how easily a decision becomes a task with an owner, status, and due date.
- Check the working views. Verify that the needed board or canvas views, dependencies, and integrations are available on the plans being considered.
- Test reporting and access. Confirm that collaborators can work with the required permissions and that reporting covers the number of projects or boards your team needs.
- Compare the actual subscription scope. Price the necessary seats and features using the same locale and billing terms, and confirm plan gates on each vendor’s current pages.
This comparison is based on official product documentation, not hands-on testing. A pilot helps answer the team-specific question those pages cannot: whether the real workflow feels clear and manageable from first idea through delivery.
