Minesweeper FAQ: First Clicks, Flags, Chording, and Beginner Tips

Understand Minesweeper’s number clues, flags, chording, first-click guarantees, and why some boards require a guess.

Minesweeper gets easier when you treat each revealed number as a precise local clue: it tells you exactly how many mines are in the surrounding cells. Use that count to find certain mines and safe squares before guessing, and only chord a clue when its flags are correct. First-click protection and winning rules vary by game, so check the version you are playing.

What does each Minesweeper number mean?

A revealed number counts the mines in the cells around it, including diagonals. A 1 does not mean that one particular neighboring square is dangerous; it means exactly one of the clue’s covered or uncovered neighbors contains a mine. A clue can have up to eight neighbors, or fewer at a board edge or corner.

A blank cell has no neighboring mines. Many versions automatically reveal surrounding cells when you open a blank, which can expose a larger safe area.

How do you make a deduction?

One covered neighbor means one mine

If a 1 touches exactly one covered cell whose status is unknown, that cell must be a mine: it is the only way to satisfy the clue. Mark it if a flag helps you keep track.

A satisfied clue leaves its other covered neighbors safe

If a clue’s full number of adjacent mines has already been identified, all its other covered neighbors are safe to open. For example, if a 1 borders one confirmed mine and two other covered cells, those two cells cannot contain mines without making the clue count exceed 1.

These deductions depend on the clue’s full set of neighbors and on the mines being genuinely confirmed. If neither deduction applies, inspect another revealed clue or boundary rather than treating a flag as proof.

What does a flag do?

A flag is your marker for a suspected mine; it records your judgment but does not verify the cell. Flags can help you remember deductions and may be needed for chording, but some experienced players use them sparingly. The win condition also varies: one version may count revealing every safe cell as a win, while another may expect you to flag every mine. Follow the rule stated by your game.

What is chording, and when is it safe?

Chording is a shortcut that opens the covered neighbors of a revealed clue when the number of adjacent flags matches the clue’s number. If a 2 has two adjacent flags, for example, chording it opens its other covered neighbors.

Use it only when those flags are known to be correct. A misplaced flag can make the count appear to match and cause the chord to open a mine. The gesture differs among games: mouse and touch controls are not universal, so check the controls shown by your site or app before trying it.

Is the first click always safe?

No single guarantee applies to every Minesweeper version. Some guides describe generating the board after the first click; others promise that the first cell and surrounding cells are safe, or describe a safe click that produces a useful opening. Many modern versions protect the first move, but that does not necessarily mean the click reveals a blank area or leaves every nearby cell mine-free. Check the named game’s rules for the exact promise.

Can a Minesweeper board force you to guess?

Yes. In classic play, a board can reach a point where the clues do not establish which of the remaining covered cells contains a mine. Some games offer a separate no-guess mode, but its availability is implementation-specific. If no certain local deduction is available, continue checking other exposed clues; if none helps, you may have to make a probability-based choice.

Why do controls and rules seem different between games?

Minesweeper has many implementations, and details such as first-click protection, chord gestures, flag use, win conditions, and board settings can differ. For instance, Minesweeper.free gives a beginner example of a 9×9 board with 10 mines; that is its example configuration, not a universal beginner standard. Use the instructions in the version you opened rather than assuming another game’s dimensions or controls apply.
