Choose Miner if you need more ore for crafting and progression; choose Geologist if paired gems and the geode or gem-value path suit your plans better. Neither is universally stronger. Your level-5 choice also determines which level-10 professions you can select, and you can change it later for 10,000g.
What do Miner and Geologist do?
At Mining level 5, Miner adds one ore per ore vein. Geologist gives mining nodes a 50% chance to produce gems in pairs; the Stardew Valley Wiki says the effect also applies to geodes spawned by breaking rocks. These perks serve different resource priorities rather than making one choice best for every save.

How does the level-5 choice affect level 10?
Your level-5 profession determines which two level-10 professions become available, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Mining guide.
| Level-5 path | Level-10 profession | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Miner | Blacksmith | Metal bars are worth 50% more. The Wiki lists Copper, Iron, Gold, Iridium, and Radioactive Bars. |
| Miner | Prospector | Doubles the chance to find coal. |
| Geologist | Excavator | Doubles the chance to find all four types of geodes. |
| Geologist | Gemologist | Gems are worth 30% more; the Wiki applies this to minerals and gems. |
Think about the later branch if you already know what you want from Mining: Miner leads to options centered on bar value or coal, while Geologist leads to geodes or the value of gems and minerals. These effects support different plans; they do not establish a universally optimal path.

Which profession should you choose?
- Choose Miner if extra ore is what you need most for crafting or progression.
- Choose Geologist if paired gems appeal to you, or you expect to value the geode and gem-value options later.
- If you are undecided, compare the level-10 effects first. Use the level-5 perk as the tie-breaker: one extra ore per vein versus a chance for paired gems.
Can you change your profession later?
Yes. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Skills guide says the Statue of Uncertainty in the Sewers lets you change a profession you have already chosen for 10,000g. Select the skill to change; the profession-choice screen appears after you sleep. The choice matters, but it is reversible at that cost.
