Minecraft Spyglass Guide: How to Craft and Use It in Java and Bedrock

A complete Minecraft Spyglass guide covering the center-column recipe, ingredient sources, FOV-based zoom, Java and Bedrock differences, safe scouting, and troubleshooting.

In Minecraft, the Spyglass is a vanilla tool for examining distant terrain, mobs, structures, and landmarks. Craft it at a crafting table, hold it in your hand, and use the Spyglass control to look through a magnified view. The recipe, ingredient locations, zoom behavior, and a few practical safety habits differ in importance between Java and Bedrock, so the details below cover both editions.

What the Spyglass does

The Spyglass narrows your view and enlarges faraway objects, making it easier to inspect something before you walk toward it. Mojang describes the feature this way: “Spyglasses make far-away things larger so you can see them more clearly.” It is useful for checking a skyline, identifying a moving shape, studying a build from outside, or deciding whether a distant landmark is worth reaching.

The item does not move you, reveal hidden areas, or make a dangerous location safe. You still occupy the same exposed position while looking through it, and nearby threats remain nearby. Treat the Spyglass as a scouting tool rather than protection: choose a secure place to stand before activating it.

Spyglass recipe and crafting layout

Use a crafting table and place the ingredients in a vertical line in the center column. The exact arrangement is:

Crafting-table slot Item
Top-middle 1 Amethyst Shard
Middle-middle 1 Copper Ingot
Bottom-middle 1 Copper Ingot

The output is one Spyglass. The official Java notes summarize the recipe as two Copper Ingots and one Amethyst Shard. The recipe and the basic distant-view function are shared by Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.

Craft it step by step

  1. Collect one Amethyst Shard and two Copper Ingots.
  2. Open a crafting table so you have its 3-by-3 crafting grid.
  3. Put the Amethyst Shard in the top-middle slot.
  4. Put one Copper Ingot directly below it, in the middle-middle slot.
  5. Put the second Copper Ingot in the bottom-middle slot.
  6. Move the Spyglass from the result box into your inventory or hotbar.

If the result does not appear, check the positions rather than simply counting the ingredients. A shard in a side column or copper arranged horizontally is not the documented pattern. Also make sure you are using a crafting table rather than a smaller personal crafting grid.

How to get Copper Ingots

Copper Ingots are made by smelting raw copper. Copper ore and raw copper are the practical starting materials; the official Minecraft guidance specifically directs players to obtain ingots by smelting raw copper.

From raw copper to ingots

  1. Obtain raw copper from your mining trip or from copper ore processing.
  2. Place the raw copper in a furnace or another suitable smelting block.
  3. Supply the smelting block with its required fuel.
  4. Wait for the smelting operation to finish, then collect the Copper Ingots.

Plan for two ingots for the Spyglass recipe. If you are preparing several Spyglasses for a group, each additional item requires its own two-ingot share, so smelt enough raw copper before opening the crafting table. Keeping the ingots in your inventory also makes it easier to distinguish a missing ingredient from a misplaced ingredient when the recipe fails.

How to get an Amethyst Shard

Amethyst Shards come from underground amethyst geodes. Inside a geode, look for fully grown amethyst clusters and break those clusters to obtain shards.

Identify the correct amethyst block

  • Fully grown amethyst cluster: This is the harvestable source of the shard used in the recipe.
  • Amethyst block: This is not the same thing as a fully grown cluster and should not be treated as the shard source.
  • Budding amethyst: Do not confuse it with a mature cluster. Budding amethyst is not the harvestable cluster described for obtaining the recipe ingredient.

When exploring underground, first locate the geode, then search its interior for mature clusters instead of breaking every purple-looking block. The objective is the cluster itself, not merely any amethyst-colored material. Once you have a shard, combine it with the two ingots in the center column of the crafting table.

Using the Spyglass in game

Activate the view

Put the Spyglass in your hand and use it. On a mouse-and-keyboard setup this is normally the right-click action; on a controller or touch device, use the Spyglass button shown by the interface. Keep the item selected while you look, and release or switch away from it when you want to return to normal vision.

The control label can vary by platform because Bedrock supports several input types. The important sequence is the same: hold the Spyglass, activate its use action, aim at the distant feature, and stop using it when you have finished scouting.

What becomes easier to see

  • Terrain and landmarks: Inspect a ridge, coastline, unusual mountain shape, or other navigation reference before choosing a route.
  • Structures: Check a distant village, tower, portal, ship, or other structure from a safe position.
  • Mobs: Determine whether a moving silhouette is a useful mob, a hostile mob, or only a terrain detail.
  • Builds: Step back from a construction and inspect its overall silhouette, roofline, and alignment.

How Spyglass zoom is calculated

The Spyglass view is tied to your configured field of view (FOV), not to one universal magnification value. Mojang reports the default FOV as 70 degrees in Java Edition and 60 degrees in Bedrock Edition. Through the Spyglass, the player receives one tenth of the configured FOV.

Edition and setting Documented value Approximate Spyglass view
Java Edition at default FOV 70° configured FOV About 7°
Bedrock Edition at default FOV 60° configured FOV About 6°
Either edition with a custom FOV Your configured FOV One tenth of that setting

For example, changing your FOV changes the width of the Spyglass view as well. A wider configured FOV produces a wider Spyglass view, while a narrower configured FOV produces a tighter one. This is why two players can report a different feel even when they are using the same item.

The Spyglass is therefore best understood as a controlled, FOV-dependent viewing mode rather than a fixed “zoom level.” If a distant object looks more or less enlarged than expected, check the FOV setting before assuming the item is malfunctioning.

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition differences

Feature Java Edition Bedrock Edition
Recipe One shard above two vertically aligned Copper Ingots Same recipe and slot arrangement
Core function Look through the item to enlarge distant objects Same distant-view function
Default FOV used in Mojang’s explanation 70° 60°
Result at that default Approximately 7° through the Spyglass Approximately 6° through the Spyglass
Camera movement while viewing No Bedrock-specific damping control is identified in the cited notes Movement slows while looking through the Spyglass; the amount can be adjusted with Spyglass Damping in Settings

Bedrock’s Spyglass Damping slider is a comfort and control option. It changes how quickly the camera responds while you are looking through the item; it does not alter the recipe or the underlying one-tenth-of-configured-FOV relationship.

Because the recipe and basic viewing behavior are shared, a tutorial that shows the center-column arrangement applies to both editions. The main edition-specific consideration for routine use is how Bedrock lets you tune camera movement.

Practical ways to use a Spyglass

Scout before committing to a route

Climb to a safe overlook, scan the horizon, and identify a useful landmark before leaving. A village, tower, portal, ship, or other structure can become a navigation target. This reduces blind wandering and helps you choose a route around cliffs, water, or hostile areas without first walking into them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Classify distant movement

A small moving shape can be difficult to identify at normal viewing distance. Use the Spyglass to check whether it is a mob, a hostile mob, or an artifact of the terrain. Make the identification from cover or from a position with a clear retreat path; the item improves visibility but does not prevent an enemy from reaching you.

Review a build’s silhouette

Builders often inspect details up close and miss the way a structure reads from a distance. Move to a safe viewing point, activate the Spyglass, and check the outline, major horizontal lines, roof alignment, and how the build sits against the surrounding terrain. This is particularly helpful when testing whether a landmark remains recognizable from a travel route.

Confirm a landmark before spending supplies

When a distant shape might be the destination you need, zoom first. Confirming the landmark before crossing a dangerous area can prevent a long detour. Use the same vantage point to compare the shape with your map or remembered route, then proceed only after you know where you are going.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A safe Spyglass scouting workflow

  1. Reach cover or high ground. Choose a position where nearby threats are unlikely to reach you while your attention is focused on the narrow view.
  2. Stop moving before activating it. A stationary viewpoint makes it easier to keep the target centered and reduces the chance of walking off an edge.
  3. Scan in sections. Sweep the horizon deliberately rather than swinging randomly, and note landmarks as you find them.
  4. Identify the target. Decide whether the shape is terrain, a structure, or a mob before selecting a route.
  5. Exit the view and reassess. Return to normal vision, check your immediate surroundings, and only then move toward the target.
  6. Repeat from the next safe position. If the destination disappears behind terrain, stop again before using the Spyglass for another scan.

This sequence separates observation from movement. The separation matters because the magnified view focuses your attention on a distant target while nearby hazards remain part of the normal world around you.

Spyglass versus normal viewing and client zoom

The Spyglass is a built-in item, so it can be used without changing the client or adding a separate viewing feature. Ordinary viewing requires no materials but provides no intentional enlargement. A client zoom feature, where available, depends on the particular client or configuration rather than on the vanilla item recipe.

Comparison point Vanilla Spyglass Unaided viewing Client zoom feature
Availability Built into the game once crafted Always available Depends on the client or configuration
Materials One Amethyst Shard and two Copper Ingots None Not established by the vanilla recipe
Magnification Enlarges distant objects through a dedicated view No added enlargement Varies by the feature being used
FOV relationship One tenth of the configured FOV Uses the normal configured FOV Depends on the client feature
Camera comfort Bedrock provides Spyglass Damping No Spyglass camera mode Depends on the client feature
Java/Bedrock consistency Recipe and core use are shared Normal viewing exists in both editions Consistency is not guaranteed across clients or editions

For a survival world, the Spyglass is the predictable choice because its recipe and behavior are part of the game itself. Normal viewing remains useful for movement and close work, while any client-side alternative should be evaluated separately for its own controls and compatibility.

Troubleshooting common problems

The Spyglass recipe is not producing an output

  • Confirm that the Amethyst Shard is in the top-middle slot.
  • Confirm that the two Copper Ingots are directly below it in the middle-middle and bottom-middle slots.
  • Use a crafting table’s 3-by-3 grid.
  • Check that the items are Copper Ingots, not raw copper, and that the amethyst item is a shard rather than an amethyst block or budding amethyst.

You cannot find an Amethyst Shard

Search for an underground amethyst geode and look specifically for fully grown amethyst clusters. Breaking an amethyst block or budding amethyst does not substitute for harvesting the mature cluster described for this recipe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You have copper but no Copper Ingots

Smelt the raw copper in a furnace or another suitable smelting block, provide fuel, and collect the resulting ingots. Raw copper is an ingredient source, not the finished recipe item.

The zoom feels different from another player’s

Compare configured FOV settings first. The Spyglass uses one tenth of the setting, so different FOV choices produce different viewing widths. Java and Bedrock also use different documented defaults.

The camera feels uncomfortable on Bedrock

Open Settings and adjust the Spyglass Damping slider. This changes camera movement while viewing and is intended as a control and comfort adjustment; it does not change what materials you need.

You keep getting surprised while scouting

Move to a safe vantage point, stop before activating the Spyglass, and check your surroundings after leaving the magnified view. The item helps you inspect a distant target but does not pause the world or protect you from nearby threats.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best-practice checklist

  • Carry the Spyglass in an accessible hotbar slot when exploring unfamiliar terrain.
  • Use high ground or cover before narrowing your view.
  • Scan for structures and route markers before crossing dangerous terrain.
  • Use the magnified view to identify moving shapes instead of approaching every silhouette.
  • Inspect builds from outside to judge their overall outline and alignment.
  • Remember that your configured FOV affects the Spyglass view.
  • On Bedrock, tune Spyglass Damping if camera movement is uncomfortable.
  • Return to normal vision before moving, jumping, or navigating near an edge.
