Direct answer: Open the site in a desktop browser, choose View Page Source (or press Ctrl/Cmd+U), search for /wp-content/themes/, and note the theme-directory name in a stylesheet or asset URL. Then open that directory’s style.css and read its header, especially Theme Name, Author, Version, and Template. If you administer the site, confirm the result at Dashboard → Appearance → Themes; that screen shows the active installation setting.

The URL path is only a clue. The style.css header is stronger public evidence, while the dashboard is authoritative for a site you control. A child theme, page builder, custom code, combined assets, or rewritten URLs can make the visible design differ from the underlying theme, so report those layers separately instead of assuming the first name you see is the whole explanation.

Start with the public source code
You do not need administrator access to investigate a publicly reachable WordPress site. The quickest dependable method is to inspect the HTML source that the site sends to your browser and follow a theme asset back to its metadata.
- Use a desktop browser. Open the site’s home page, or a representative page if the home page is heavily customized.
- Open the raw source. Choose View Page Source from the browser menu, or press Ctrl+U on Windows/Linux or Cmd+U on macOS. Use the source view rather than only the live-inspector tree; the source makes the original asset URLs easier to search.
- Search for the theme path. Press Ctrl/Cmd+F and search for
/wp-content/themes/. - Read the directory name. In a URL such as
/wp-content/themes/example-theme/css/main.css,example-themeis the theme directory. Ignore the file name, later folders, and query strings such as a version parameter. - Capture the complete stylesheet URL. Look for a URL ending in
style.cssor for a theme asset whose directory clearly identifies the theme. Copy the address exactly, including whether it useshttp,https, a leading slash, or another host. - Open the theme stylesheet. Paste the URL into a new tab. If the URL points to another file, go back to the theme directory and try its
style.css. Read the comment header at the beginning of the file.
WordPress’s official theme documentation describes the reason this works: “When determining which themes are available to activate, WordPress searches through each folder under /wp-content/themes, looking for a style.css file.” The directory convention therefore gives you a useful public implementation clue, even when the design has been extensively changed.

What the path can and cannot prove
A visible /wp-content/themes/ URL proves that a browser received an asset associated with a WordPress theme directory. It does not prove that the directory name is a commercial product, that the design is unmodified, or that the theme supplies every visible component. A developer may have changed the templates and CSS, installed a child theme, or used a page builder that controls most of the layout.
Do not identify a theme solely from a class name, a screenshot, or a logo in the footer. Those clues can survive after a redesign or be copied into a completely custom theme. Use them only as supporting context after checking the theme metadata.

The header in the theme’s style.css is the strongest confirmation normally available to a public visitor. WordPress recognizes standard header fields, and the header is the developer’s declaration of the theme’s identity rather than an inference from a URL slug.

A header may also include other standard information, but the four fields above answer the usual identification question. If the browser displays minified CSS before the header, use the browser’s find command for Theme Name: or view the file as plain text. Preserve the header’s exact values in your notes; a directory slug and a display name are often different.

Use a second check when the stylesheet is ambiguous
Some sites expose several theme-related stylesheets. One may belong to a child theme while another belongs to its parent; a plugin or builder may load additional CSS from a different location. Compare each file’s directory and header instead of choosing the first match. A stylesheet that contains a clear Theme Name header is more persuasive than an asset URL that merely resembles a theme folder.
Handle child themes correctly
A child theme is a separate theme directory that inherits from a parent. Its style.css normally declares the child’s own Theme Name and includes a Template field naming the parent directory. If you report only the parent, you may omit the theme actually activated by the site; if you report only the child, you may hide the commercial or framework theme that supplies inherited files.

Theme Name,Author, andVersion. - Look for a
Templateline and copy its value exactly. - Search the source for that parent directory under
/wp-content/themes/. - Open the parent directory’s
style.cssand record its ownTheme Nameand version. - Describe the result in two layers, for example: “Active child theme: [declared child name]; parent theme: [declared parent name].”
If the child’s metadata is visible but the parent stylesheet is not publicly reachable, say that the parent is declared by the child’s Template field rather than claiming you independently verified the parent package. Conversely, a parent directory found in an asset URL does not establish that it is active unless the child metadata or dashboard confirms the relationship.
Distinguish a theme from a page builder
The theme determines the WordPress theme layer, but a page builder can generate the page structure, typography, spacing, headers, and footers that visitors notice. A heavily customized site can therefore look unrelated to its underlying theme. When public evidence supports both, state them separately: identify the theme from its stylesheet metadata and identify the builder from clearly attributable builder assets or markup. Do not call the builder the theme.

This distinction also explains why two sites using the same theme can look entirely different. The theme name answers which theme package is installed or declared; it does not promise a stock demo layout or unmodified templates. If you cannot verify a builder from public evidence, leave it unconfirmed rather than inferring it from the visual style.
If you own the site, use the dashboard
For a site you administer, the WordPress dashboard is the authoritative route because it reflects the installation’s active-theme setting rather than only what a visitor can detect.
- Sign in to WordPress.
- Open Appearance → Themes.
- Find the card marked Active. Read the displayed theme name and, where shown, its author and version.
- Open the theme’s details if you need the exact package information.
The dashboard can show an active custom theme even when public asset URLs are rewritten or combined. It can also reveal a child theme that is difficult to distinguish from its parent by looking at the front end alone.
Classify the theme type cautiously
As a quick classification aid, Appearance → Editor usually indicates a block theme, while Appearance → Customize usually indicates a classic theme. These labels are not an absolute test: permissions, installed features, and WordPress versions can change which menu appears. Use the active-theme card as the identity source and treat the menu label only as a practical indication of the editing model.

A detector service can save time when you are screening many sites, but its result is still an interpretation of public signals. Treat it as a lead, then verify the stylesheet header or dashboard whenever possible. Automation cannot reliably reveal a private custom theme or a parent that is not exposed in the fetched assets.

Failure to find the path does not prove that the site is not using WordPress. Work through the following cases without upgrading a weak clue into a definite identification.

CSS and assets are combined
A performance setup may serve one combined stylesheet instead of separate theme files. The original directory can disappear from the HTML source, and the combined file may not retain a recognizable header. Search the source for other references to wp-content, inspect the loaded stylesheet names, and look for an uncombined theme asset. If no header is available, report that the public evidence is inconclusive.
URLs are rewritten
A proxy, content-delivery layer, or security configuration can rewrite asset paths. The browser may receive a short or unrelated URL even though WordPress generated the file from a theme directory. Follow the asset’s response and content where possible, but do not reconstruct a theme path that is not actually exposed. A rewritten URL is a reason to lower confidence, not a reason to guess.
The theme is custom-built
Custom themes often use a descriptive, internal, or private name instead of a marketplace product name. The correct answer may simply be “custom theme,” followed by the exact Theme Name value if one is declared. Do not force a custom result into the name of a visually similar commercial theme.
A child theme hides the parent
You may see only the child directory in public assets. Read its Template field and search for the parent separately. If the parent’s files are not exposed, distinguish between “parent declared in metadata” and “parent stylesheet independently verified.”
The site is not exposing enough metadata
A missing Theme Name header, inaccessible stylesheet, or heavily transformed asset can leave only circumstantial evidence. In that situation, give the strongest supported result—such as “a WordPress theme directory named site-theme was referenced”—and explicitly say that the theme name could not be confirmed. This is more accurate than presenting a detector’s guess as fact.
Keep a reproducible record of what you found
If the identification matters for migration, accessibility work, security review, or design research, save the evidence rather than only the final name. Record the page inspected, the asset URL, the directory name, the date you checked it, and the exact header values. A simple note can use this format:

Version: 2.4.1
Template: example-parentThe domain above is an illustrative placeholder, not a claim about a real site. In your own notes, replace it with the actual page and preserve the URL exactly as received. Keeping the raw header helps resolve later disagreements when a site is updated or a child theme is replaced.
How to phrase the final identification
Use language that matches the evidence level:
- Confirmed public theme: “The site references
/wp-content/themes/example-theme/, and that folder’sstyle.cssdeclaresTheme Name: Example Theme.” - Child and parent: “The active public layer declares [child name]; its
Templatefield names [parent directory], whose stylesheet declares [parent name].” - Custom theme: “The stylesheet declares a custom or privately named theme; no public evidence establishes a marketplace product.”
- Unconfirmed lead: “A detector or asset path suggests [name], but the stylesheet header was not available, so the result is not independently confirmed.”
These formulations separate what the browser actually exposed from what you inferred. They also prevent a common mistake: treating a theme slug, a parent framework, and a page builder as interchangeable names.
A practical decision path
- Need a quick answer about any public site? Search source for
/wp-content/themes/. - Found a directory? Open its
style.cssand readTheme Name. - See
Template? Verify the parent separately and report both layers. - No usable path or stylesheet? Check for combined or rewritten assets and downgrade the result if metadata remains unavailable.
- Control the installation? Use Appearance → Themes as the final authority.
The reliable hierarchy is therefore dashboard state for administrators, stylesheet metadata for public verification, and asset paths or detector output as supporting clues. A site’s appearance alone is never enough to establish which WordPress theme it uses.
