Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallMost Minecraft server startup failures blamed on “Java” have one of two causes: the server JAR was compiled for a newer Java major version than the one actually launching it, or your panel/script is calling a different Java executable than the one you tested. Match the server software and Minecraft version first, verify Java in the same launch context, then start the JAR from a script so the real error remains visible.

For current versions, Paper requires Java 17 for 1.17–1.19, Java 21 for 1.20–1.21.11, and Java 25 for 26.1 and later. Fabric requires Java 17 for 1.17–1.20.4 and Java 21 for 1.20.5 and later. Mojang’s 1.18 release notes state that Minecraft moved to Java 17.

Find the Java version your server actually needs
Java requirements are set by the server software build, not by the operating system and not by whichever Java installer you most recently downloaded. Identify both the Minecraft release and the server JAR type before changing anything.
| Server software | Minecraft versions | Required Java major version | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper | 1.17–1.19 | Java 17 | Paper’s current compatibility table lists Java 17 for this range. |
| Paper | 1.20–1.21.11 | Java 21 | A Java 17 runtime is too old for these Paper builds. |
| Paper | 26.1 and later | Java 25 | This is the newer requirement shown in Paper’s current documentation, accessed October 15, 2026. |
| Fabric | 1.17–1.20.4 | Java 17 | Fabric’s installation documentation specifies Java 17. |
| Fabric | 1.20.5 and later | Java 21 | Use Java 21 for these Fabric server releases. |
| Vanilla Java Edition | Depends on the Minecraft release | Use the major version required by that release | Mojang says Java Edition needs a compatible Java installation; its 1.18 notes specify Java 17. |
The ranges overlap at release boundaries, so check the exact server build. A Paper server and a Fabric server for the same Minecraft version can have different launchers and different setup files even when their Java requirement happens to match.

Step 1: Confirm the JAR, loader and version
- Open the server directory. This is the folder containing the JAR you intend to launch, the
eula.txtfile after first run, and usuallyserver.properties. - Read the filename and download page. Distinguish a vanilla server JAR from a Paper JAR or a Fabric server launcher. Do not assume that a file named
server.jaris vanilla; rename files only after you know which build they contain. - Write down the exact Minecraft version. “1.21” is not precise enough when a compatibility table separates 1.21.11 from a future 26.1 release.
- Check the loader’s own requirement. Apply the Paper or Fabric row above when using that software. If you use another loader, follow that project’s stated Java requirement rather than copying a Paper command.
Step 2: Check Java in the same context that launches the server
Run the version check in the same terminal, control panel, service definition or startup script used for the server. A shell can find one Java executable while a panel, scheduled task or service uses another.
Interactive terminal check
Run:
java -version
Read the first line and note the major version. For example, a Java 17 installation reports a 17 major release, while Java 21 reports 21. The exact vendor and patch number are less important for this compatibility check than the major number.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Find which executable is selected
On Windows, run:
where java
On Linux or macOS, run:
which java
If more than one path appears, the first one is normally selected by that shell’s PATH order. Compare the selected path with the Java installation you intended to use. A successful java -version in a new terminal does not prove that an existing service or hosting panel changed its runtime.
Panel, service and container checks
For a game panel, inspect the server’s startup command or selected runtime image and run the panel’s console command, if available. For a system service, inspect the service’s ExecStart line or equivalent and use an absolute path to Java. For a container, the Java version inside the container is the one that matters; a Java installation on the host does not change it automatically.
Understand UnsupportedClassVersionError
This error is a direct version mismatch. The JAR contains class files compiled for a newer Java than the runtime can read. Paper’s example describes class-file version 65 being run by a runtime that supports only through version 61: the server needs Java 21, while the process is running Java 17.

| Error detail | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| “class file version 65.0” | The server was compiled for Java 21. | Launch it with Java 21 or a compatible newer runtime required by that server build. |
| “supports up to 61.0” | The active runtime is Java 17. | Change the executable used by the startup command, panel or service. |
| “Your version of Java is outdated” | The runtime is below the project’s required major version. | Install the required major version, reopen the launch context and verify again. |
Do not try to repair this by editing the JAR or adding random JVM flags. Flags can tune memory or display options; they cannot make an older Java runtime understand newer class files.
Recommended Free Tools
Install the required Java and make the launcher use it
Windows
- Install the Java major version required by your Minecraft and server-software combination.
- Close every Command Prompt, PowerShell window and server panel that may have cached the old PATH.
- Open a new terminal and run
java -versionandwhere javaagain. - If the old path still appears first, move the intended Java
bindirectory earlier in PATH, remove stale entries, or bypass PATH by calling the full path tojava.exein your startup script.
An absolute-path command looks like this; replace the path and JAR name with your installations:
"C:PathToJavabinjava.exe" -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --nogui
Keep the path in quotes when it contains spaces. This avoids relying on whichever Java installation Windows happens to select first.
Linux and macOS
- Install the required Java major version using the operating system’s supported package or runtime distribution.
- Start a new shell so environment changes are loaded.
- Run
java -versionandwhich javafrom the server directory. - If a service launches the server, configure that service with the intended absolute Java path instead of assuming it inherits your interactive shell.
Do not delete an older Java installation until you have checked whether another server still depends on it. Keeping multiple versions is workable when each startup script names the correct executable explicitly.
Start the server from a visible, repeatable command
Double-clicking a JAR is a poor diagnostic method: the window can close before you read the exception, and you cannot see which Java executable was selected. Use a script or terminal opened in the server directory.

Paper
Paper documents this form:
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --nogui
-Xms4G sets the initial heap and -Xmx4G sets the maximum heap. Adjust memory to what your machine can safely provide; changing these values will not solve a Java-major-version mismatch. Replace paper.jar with the exact downloaded filename.
Fabric
Fabric documents this form:
java -Xmx2G -jar fabric-server-launcher.jar nogui
Substitute the exact Fabric server launcher filename. Fabric’s launcher and its generated files are not interchangeable with a Paper JAR.
Vanilla
Use the vanilla server JAR’s exact filename and the Java major version required for that Minecraft release. A typical visible launch command is:
java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar nogui
Rename server.jar in the command only if your downloaded file has that name; otherwise use the real filename.
Keep a Windows window open after failure
Create a batch file in the server directory, put the launch command on one line, and add:

- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen

pause
After an error, the console stays open so you can copy the first exception. Once the server starts reliably, you can remove pause or leave it as a useful failure safeguard.
When Java is correct but the server still will not start
Once java -version in the real launch context matches the compatibility table, stop changing Java and inspect the first meaningful error in the server output.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRead the first exception and the current log
Paper recommends checking latest.log, crash reports and the first exception in the stack trace. Later messages are often consequences of the original failure. Copy the complete first exception, including the named class, file or plugin, before making changes.
Plugin failure
If a plugin name appears in the first exception, stop the server, make a backup, and temporarily move that plugin out of the plugins directory. Start again. If the server works, test plugins one at a time or in small groups to identify the incompatible one, then obtain a build that supports your Minecraft and server versions.
Port binding failure
A message saying the server cannot bind its port usually means another process already owns that port or server-ip is set incorrectly. It is not evidence of a Java-version mismatch. Stop the other Java server or process, choose an available port, and check the server-ip value in server.properties. Leave it blank unless you have a specific reason to bind to one local address.
Best Value

- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
“World saved with newer version”
This means the world was opened by a newer server than the one you are trying to run. Downgrading is unsupported and can damage the world. Restore a backup and use a server version compatible with the world instead of forcing an override.
Missing or rejected EULA
A first launch may stop before creating a usable world until the EULA is accepted. Read the generated file and follow its stated requirement; do not treat this normal first-run stop as a Java failure.
Paper, Fabric and vanilla: choose the setup you can maintain
| Option | Java requirement approach | Extensions | Launcher and files | Maintenance considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vanilla | Match Mojang’s requirement for the exact release; Java 17 is specified from 1.18. | No plugin or mod framework included. | One Mojang server JAR plus standard server files. | Fewer moving parts, but you handle Java, memory, backups, firewall and networking yourself. |
| Paper | Java 17 for 1.17–1.19; Java 21 for 1.20–1.21.11; Java 25 for 26.1+. | Plugin-based extensions. | Paper JAR and a Paper startup command. | Check every plugin against the target Paper and Minecraft versions; keep logs and backups when updating. |
| Fabric | Java 17 for 1.17–1.20.4; Java 21 for 1.20.5+. | Mod-based extensions. | Fabric server launcher plus Fabric loader and mod files. | Loader, game version and every mod must line up; keep the launcher and mods together when making a backup. |
Update cadence varies by project and release. Treat the project’s compatibility table and the exact build’s release notes as authoritative rather than assuming that a newer Minecraft point release keeps the same Java requirement.
A complete recovery checklist
- Record the exact Minecraft version and whether the server is vanilla, Paper, Fabric or another loader.
- Back up the world, configuration and extension directories before changing Java or updating a server.
- Run
java -versionfrom the same context that launches the server. - Use
where javaon Windows orwhich javaon Linux/macOS to identify the selected executable. - Compare the major version with the correct Paper, Fabric or vanilla requirement.
- Install the required Java major version and reopen the terminal, panel or service.
- Use an absolute
javapath when PATH contains multiple installations. - Launch from the server directory with the exact JAR filename and
noguioption. - Keep the console visible and capture the first exception.
- If Java matches, inspect
latest.log, crash reports, plugins, port binding and world-version messages instead of repeatedly reinstalling Java.
When managed hosting is the practical alternative
Running locally requires you to maintain the Java runtime, startup script, memory settings, firewall rules, backups and—when friends connect from outside your network—port forwarding. Managed Minecraft server hosting can remove much of that operating-system work, but support is not automatic: confirm that the provider offers your exact Minecraft version, server software and mod loader, and that you can select or verify the required Java major version. Keep independent backups even when a host advertises automated snapshots.
What to report when asking for help
A useful support request includes the exact Minecraft version, server software and build, operating system, output of java -version from the launch context, the complete startup command, and the first exception from the console or latest.log. Include whether another server is running on the same machine and whether the world was last opened by a newer version. This information separates a Java mismatch from a plugin, port or world-compatibility problem immediately.
