Install Vulcan on a supported Spigot, Paper, or other supported Paper fork, and install PacketEvents beside it. PacketEvents is mandatory because Vulcan uses it to read client packets; without the dependency, Vulcan will not run. Folia is not supported at the time of the official installation guidance.

After the first successful start, configure alerts, punishment commands, checks, and (if needed) Discord notifications from the generated Vulcan files. Start with the shipped defaults, test on a staging server, and tighten thresholds only after you have reviewed real alerts. The procedure below covers the complete first installation, configuration, update, and false-positive workflow.

Vulcan is a server-side Minecraft anti-cheat plugin, so compatibility depends on the server software and Minecraft build running your server. The official installation guidance names Spigot, Paper, and forks of Paper as supported families and explicitly says Folia is not supported at the moment. Product material also lists Spigot, Paper, Pufferfish, and Purpur, but version support changes over time.
| Server software | What the installation guidance establishes | Action before deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Spigot | Supported | Confirm that your Minecraft version is listed on the current official Spigot product page. |
| Paper | Supported | Match Vulcan and PacketEvents to the server version you actually run. |
| Paper forks | Supported in principle; the guide cautions that some forks may not work | Check the current compatibility information and test the exact fork on a staging server. |
| Pufferfish or Purpur | Listed in product compatibility material | Treat support as version-sensitive and verify the current listing before purchase or production use. |
| Folia | Explicitly unsupported by the installation guide | Do not plan a Vulcan deployment on Folia unless an official update changes this status. |
Have console access, permission to stop and start the server, and a recent backup of the server directory. A test or staging instance is strongly preferable: anti-cheat thresholds can affect legitimate players, and Vulcan’s disclaimer acknowledges that false positives and bypasses can occur.

Purchase Vulcan from the official channel
The Vulcan wiki identifies Spigot as the only official purchase location. Download the plugin jar from the purchase account after confirming that the product supports your planned server software and Minecraft version. Avoid relying on an old jar copied from another server; compatibility and configuration options can change between releases.
Download PacketEvents
PacketEvents is a required dependency, not an optional enhancement. The official guide explains that it allows Vulcan to read client packets used for detection and that Vulcan will not work without it. Download the PacketEvents build intended for your server type and Minecraft version, and keep the jar available alongside Vulcan before starting the server.

- Stop the server cleanly. Use the server console or your host’s stop control. Do not replace plugin jars while the server is still writing files.
- Open the server’s
pluginsdirectory. This is the directory loaded by Spigot, Paper, and compatible forks. - Copy both jars into
plugins. Place the downloadedPacketEvents.jarand the Vulcan jar there. Keep one active copy of each plugin; duplicate or renamed jars can cause confusing load errors. - Start the server. Watch the console from the beginning of the startup sequence rather than assuming that a green “server started” message means every plugin loaded.
- Check dependency order and errors. Vulcan should load with PacketEvents available. A message that a dependency is missing, disabled, or incompatible means you should stop and correct the jars before allowing players to join.
- Stop and back up after the first successful start. The initial run creates Vulcan’s data and configuration files. Preserve that clean baseline before making edits.
Find the generated configuration
On a conventional installation, look under server-root/plugins/Vulcan/ after the first successful start. The generated config.yml is the main file for alert presentation, command actions, check settings, and staff-facing messages. The exact set of keys depends on the installed Vulcan release, so edit the file generated by your own server rather than pasting an older example wholesale.
Use a text editor that preserves UTF-8 and YAML indentation. Make a dated copy before each substantial change. A malformed YAML value can prevent settings from loading, while an apparently valid value copied from a different release can be ignored or behave differently.
Use the default configuration as your baseline
Vulcan’s official FAQ describes the default configuration as the best available starting configuration, while also noting that the best settings vary heavily by server. That is a practical reason to resist “maximum punishment” presets copied from an unrelated network. Player versions, latency, movement plugins, combat mechanics, and staff availability all change the volume and meaning of alerts.

Make one controlled change at a time. Keep a short change log with the date, the setting changed, the reason, and the observed result. Let normal players use the server long enough to produce representative alerts before changing another threshold. If an update adds options, review them before assuming your previous values cover the new checks.
Configure alerts for staff
Alerts are the first operational layer: they tell moderators that a check has produced a violation without immediately taking action against the player. In the Vulcan configuration, set the alert format and the staff-facing messages so that a moderator can identify the player, the check, and the relevant violation information quickly. Keep the format readable in the console and in chat; excessive decoration can hide the useful part of an alert.
Decide who should see alerts and when. A busy public server may need alerts routed to a limited moderation group, while a small private server may show them to all operators. Do not use an alert as proof by itself. Treat it as a prompt to inspect context, connection conditions, recent gameplay, and repeated behavior.
The installed command set can help staff investigate. A public configuration example lists commands including:
/vulcan helpfor the available command reference./vulcan menuor/vulcan guifor an interactive interface, if enabled by that release./vulcan profile <player>for a player profile./vulcan violations <player>for recorded violations./vulcan checksto inspect available checks./vulcan connection <player>for connection-related information./vulcan cps <player>and/vulcan kb <player>for the corresponding diagnostic views./vulcan freeze <player>to hold a player for a manual review, where that command is available and appropriate for your moderation policy.
These command names come from a public configuration example, not a guarantee that every release exposes every alias. Run /vulcan help on the installed version and follow its syntax.

Set punishment actions safely
Punishment settings determine which server commands Vulcan executes after a configured threshold. Typical actions might be a warning, kick, or ban command, but the actual command text and escalation are yours to define. Use the command action fields supplied by your generated configuration and test each action with a staff-only scenario before enabling it for ordinary players.
Begin with alerts and manual review, then introduce conservative actions for clear, repeated violations. A low threshold combined with an automatic ban can punish a legitimate player affected by lag or an unusual plugin interaction. Keep a human review path available, especially for permanent actions.
One important limitation is easy to miss: Vulcan executes the commands you configure, but it does not count how many punishments have occurred. The official FAQ specifically says it does not keep track of repeated punishments. Therefore, a policy such as “ban after three kicks” must be implemented by a separate punishment plugin or by an API integration that stores and counts those events. Do not assume that adding three command lines to Vulcan creates a three-strike counter.
If you need an immediate administrative test, the public command example includes /vulcan ban <player>. Treat that as a privileged command, verify the exact syntax in your release, and never test it on a real player account.
Choose which checks are enabled
Checks are the detection modules that generate violations. Keep the shipped enablement and thresholds during the observation period. Record which checks produce alerts, under what latency and gameplay conditions, and whether multiple checks report the same incident. This evidence is more useful than changing several values at once.

The configuration lets you control check enablement and related thresholds. If one check is demonstrably incompatible with a server mechanic, disable only that check while you investigate rather than turning off the entire plugin. The public command example includes /vulcan disablecheck <check>; use the command reference for your installed release and make the corresponding configuration change permanent if necessary.
Do not advertise a percentage accuracy or detection rate based on ordinary alert counts. No dated, independently attributable effectiveness statistic is established in the official installation and configuration material, and the product disclaimer allows for both false positives and bypasses.
Connect Discord alerts when needed
The official FAQ points to a separate illustrated guide for Discord webhooks. Use that guide for the webhook creation and Vulcan-side fields rather than guessing YAML keys from an old example. A webhook URL grants access to the destination channel, so keep it out of public paste sites, screenshots, and support tickets; replace it if it is exposed.
Start with a private moderation channel. Send a test alert, confirm that the message contains enough context for a moderator to act, and check that normal chat or console output is not being mirrored unnecessarily. Discord delivery should supplement in-game and console alerts, not become the only record of a violation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand the optional API and addons
The API is optional developer functionality, not a separate plugin that every server must install. The official guidance says to obtain it through the verified Discord API-and-addons channel and enable it with enable-api: true in the configuration. Only enable the API when another trusted component needs it; otherwise leave the option at its default and reduce your attack surface.
Best Value
Official and community verified addons become available after verification, but Vulcan support covers only official addons. Before installing an addon, confirm that it is intended for your Vulcan version, obtain it through the verified channel, and test it independently. An addon that changes punishments or reads violation data can alter the behavior you thought you had configured in Vulcan.
Handle a suspected false positive
When a legitimate player reports a false positive, preserve evidence before changing several settings:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Identify the affected check. Use the alert, profile, or violations view to record the check name and the time of the event.
- Reduce harm immediately. Disable the affected check or suspend its automatic punishment while you investigate. The public command example provides
/vulcan disablecheck <check>, but verify the syntax locally. - Capture a reproducible case. Ask for a video, exact reproduction steps, the player’s client and version, and the approximate server conditions. Note latency, recent restarts, and gameplay or movement plugins active at the time.
- Collect logs. Save the relevant server console lines and Vulcan messages before log rotation. Include the configuration values that governed the check.
- Test on staging. Reproduce the behavior away from the live player base, then change one setting at a time and compare the resulting alerts.
- Report through official support. Join the Vulcan Discord, verify your account with purchase information, and open a ticket with the video, reproduction steps, logs, version details, and the temporary mitigation you applied.
Do not publish a player’s private information in a public issue or Discord channel. A false-positive report is most useful when support can reproduce it with the same versions and settings.
Update without losing your settings
Before an update, stop the server and back up the entire Vulcan data directory as well as the two plugin jars. Install the new Vulcan and compatible PacketEvents versions together when the release requires it; do not leave an old dependency beside a new plugin while troubleshooting.
Vulcan documentation states that configuration files automatically add new options after updates. That convenience does not remove the need for review: open the regenerated file, compare newly added options with your intended policy, and check that custom alert and punishment commands still exist. Keep the pre-update copy until players have completed a normal session without unexpected alerts.
If the updated server fails to start, read the first Vulcan or PacketEvents error in the console, stop the server, and restore the known-good pair of jars and configuration backup. Avoid repeatedly restarting with incompatible files, which can make the log harder to interpret.

Troubleshoot common installation problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Vulcan does not load and reports a missing dependency | PacketEvents is absent, disabled, or the wrong build. | Stop the server, install the PacketEvents jar intended for your server and Minecraft version, remove duplicates, and start again. |
| The server starts but no Vulcan files appear | The jar was placed outside the active plugins directory, failed during startup, or the server is running a different directory than expected. |
Confirm the server root and startup log, then correct the jar location and inspect the earliest plugin error. |
| Configuration edits have no effect | Invalid YAML, a wrong key from another release, or an edit made while the server was running. | Restore the generated file, make one valid change while stopped, start the server, and check the console for configuration errors. |
| Alerts are missing | Alerts are disabled, staff are not receiving the configured destination, or the selected check has not produced a violation. | Review the alert settings, test with a controlled case, and confirm the installed command reference and permissions. |
| Discord receives nothing | The webhook value is wrong, revoked, or blocked by the Discord channel configuration. | Create or rotate the webhook, follow the official webhook guide, and send a private test alert. |
| Players are kicked or banned unexpectedly | Automatic punishment thresholds are too aggressive for the server’s latency or mechanics. | Disable the affected check or automatic action, gather evidence, and retune on staging before re-enabling it. |
| A “ban after X kicks” policy never triggers | Vulcan does not maintain a punishment count. | Move counting and escalation to a punishment plugin or API integration that stores the events. |
Operational checklist
- Confirm the exact server software, fork, and Minecraft version against the current official Vulcan listing.
- Back up the server before installing or updating jars.
- Install both Vulcan and the required PacketEvents dependency in the active
pluginsdirectory. - Read the startup console and verify that Vulcan generated its data files without dependency errors.
- Copy the generated configuration before editing it.
- Keep default settings during an observation period, then change one alert, punishment, or check setting at a time.
- Test every automatic command on staging and retain manual moderation for uncertain cases.
- Protect Discord webhook URLs and enable the API only when a trusted integration requires it.
- After upgrades, review automatically added configuration options and verify custom commands.
- For a false positive, disable the affected check, save video and logs, document reproduction steps, and use verified Vulcan support.
What a successful deployment looks like
A healthy Vulcan deployment has both jars loading cleanly, a generated configuration you can account for, visible staff alerts, and punishment commands that have been tested without harming real players. The defaults provide a defensible baseline, but they are not a substitute for observing your own server. Keep the plugin on supported software, treat every automated action as reversible, and use evidence-driven changes when a check conflicts with legitimate gameplay.
