Minecraft Server Won’t Start: Common Causes and Fixes

Use the first console error and logs/latest.log to identify Java, EULA, path, permission, port, mod, or connectivity problems—and fix the right branch.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Minecraft server that will not start is usually reporting a specific, fixable condition rather than failing at random. Read the first meaningful console error and logs/latest.log, then follow the branch it identifies: Java mismatch, missing EULA acceptance, wrong JAR or directory, permissions, a port conflict, or an incompatible mod or plugin. If the process reaches a running state but friends still cannot connect, you have a network problem, not a startup problem.

Start with the exact error, not a guess

Run the server from a terminal or your hosting panel’s console so the process remains visible. Copy the first exception and the lines immediately after it. Then open logs/latest.log in the server directory. The earliest meaningful error is usually more useful than a long cascade of follow-up messages.

What the log says Likely branch First action
UnsupportedClassVersionError The Java runtime is too old or the wrong Java executable is being used. Run java -version in the same account and shell that launches the server; install or select the required release.
A message about eula.txt or a failed EULA load The first-run setup has not been accepted. Open the generated eula.txt, change only eula=false to eula=true, save it beside the JAR, and launch again.
Address already in use Another process already owns the configured port. Stop the other process or choose a different server port, then update firewall and router rules to match.
A named mod, plugin, loader, or missing dependency A content or loader compatibility problem. Remove the most recently added component, restart, and reintroduce additions in small groups.
Access denied, read-only storage, or failure to create a file The account cannot write to the server directory, or another program has locked a file. Move the server to a user-owned writable folder and check antivirus or backup software for file locks.

Do not treat every restart as the same problem. A Java error cannot be repaired by changing the EULA, and port forwarding cannot make a process start when the port is already occupied.

Confirm the Java version before changing settings

The official Minecraft guidance says Java Edition requires a compatible Java installation and instructs operators to check it with java -version. Run that command in the same shell, user account, service definition, or hosting-panel environment used by the launch command. A Java version shown in a different terminal may not be the one the server actually uses.

Minecraft Java Edition 26.1 Java 25 The 2026 release notes state that Java 25 is required.

Use the requirement for your exact Minecraft release, not the version used by a tutorial for another release. If several Javas are installed, call the intended executable by its full path in the launch script, then repeat the version check through that executable. On systems where java resolves to the wrong installation, a full-path command makes the choice explicit:

<full-path-to-java> -version

If the log reports UnsupportedClassVersionError, upgrade or select a runtime new enough for the server. If the version is new enough but the error remains, verify that the launch script and the interactive version check point to the same executable.

Launch the correct JAR from the correct directory

The server must be started with the JAR you downloaded, from the directory that contains it. A wrong filename, a launch from another working directory, or a partial download can stop the process before normal configuration files are created.

  1. Open a terminal or the host’s console.
  2. Change into the server folder. In a script, use the actual path rather than relying on the terminal’s current location:
    cd <server-directory>
  3. List the files and identify the exact server JAR name. Use dir on Windows or ls on Linux and macOS.
  4. Run that exact filename. Add nogui if you want a command-line-only server:
    java -jar server.jar nogui

Replace server.jar in the example with the filename you actually listed. The first successful run normally creates eula.txt and server.properties. If neither file appears, check the console for a wrong path, a permission failure, a damaged or incomplete JAR, or a Java error before attempting further configuration.

Handle the first-run EULA message correctly

Seeing a message that the server failed to load or accept eula.txt on the first run does not by itself mean the JAR is damaged. It is part of the documented setup flow: the initial launch creates the file and stops until the agreement is recorded.

  1. Let the first run finish and locate eula.txt in the same folder as the server JAR.
  2. Open that file in a plain-text editor.
  3. Change only the value from eula=false to eula=true.
  4. Save the file without changing its name or location.
  5. Run the same launch command again.

Do not create a second EULA file in another folder. If the server still says it cannot find the file, confirm that the command’s working directory is the folder containing both the JAR and eula.txt, and check whether the editor saved an extra extension such as .txt.txt.

Fix write permissions and file locks

A server has to create and update configuration, log, and world files. When the console reports access denied, read-only storage, or an inability to create a file, first move the server into a folder owned by the account running it. Confirm that the account can create a test file there, then retry the launch.

  • Check that the server directory and its files are not marked read-only.
  • Make sure the account used by a scheduled task, service, container, or hosting panel has write access; it may differ from your interactive desktop account.
  • Temporarily inspect antivirus, endpoint-security, synchronization, and backup software for a lock on the JAR, eula.txt, logs, or world files.
  • Read the exact path named in the error. A permission failure on a world subfolder requires a different fix from a failure to read the JAR.

There is no universal Windows permission command that fixes every case. Follow the path and operation named in the log instead of granting broad permissions to the entire computer.

Resolve a port conflict

If the log says Address already in use, another server or process already owns the configured listening port. This is a startup failure: the server cannot bind to that address until the conflict is removed.

  1. Stop any other Minecraft server or network service that may be using the port.
  2. If the other process must remain active, open server.properties and change the server port to an unused value.
  3. Restart the server and confirm in the log that it binds successfully.
  4. When the server is reachable locally, update the host firewall and any router forwarding rule to the new port.

The default Java server port is 25565 when it has not been changed. A port conflict and a port-forwarding problem are different: forwarding is needed for inbound connections from outside your local network, but it cannot resolve two local processes competing for the same port.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate a startup failure from a connection failure

First test from the host itself. Connect a Minecraft client to localhost (or the local address specified by your setup) while the console shows the server running. This divides the problem into two branches.

Result What it means What to check next
The server process exits before showing a running state. This is a startup problem. Return to the first console error and logs/latest.log; follow the Java, EULA, permission, port, or mod branch.
The host can connect through localhost, but remote players time out. The server is running; inbound network traffic is being blocked or misdirected. Check the host firewall, router forwarding, the destination computer’s current private IP, and the address players enter.
The host cannot connect locally either. The process may not be listening, may be bound to an unexpected address, or may still be failing during startup. Read the latest log lines and verify the configured port and bind settings before changing router rules.

For a home-hosted server, forward the configured port to the host computer’s current private IP and allow the server through the host firewall. If you changed the port from 25565, every rule and the address players use must reflect that change. Home-network configuration can be complex; test locally first so you do not troubleshoot the router while the server itself is still broken.

Isolate mods, plugins, and loaders methodically

Modded and plugin servers add another compatibility layer. Every mod or plugin must match the Minecraft version and the server loader named in the log. A component built for a different release, loader, or dependency set can stop startup before a world loads.

  1. Back up the world and the complete server directory.
  2. Identify the last mod, plugin, loader, or library added or updated before the failure.
  3. Temporarily move that component out of the load directory rather than deleting it.
  4. Start the server and inspect the first error in the new log.
  5. If it starts, reintroduce removed components in small groups, restarting after each group.
  6. When a group fails, divide it again until the individual incompatible component or missing dependency is identified.

Read the named version and loader in the exception. Replacing a Fabric component with a Forge build, or using a mod for a different Minecraft release, requires the matching build; changing unrelated settings will not repair that mismatch. If the loader itself reports an error, use that loader’s documentation and keep the Minecraft version, loader version, and component versions aligned.

What to do when startup appears stuck

A long pause is not enough evidence to kill the process. Keep the console visible and compare it with logs/latest.log. Look for a repeating exception, a named component, or a final line indicating that the server has reached its running state. If the log stops at a clear error, fix that error first. If it reaches a running state but the panel or window looks idle, perform the localhost test before changing files.

When a recent mod or plugin is present, use the isolation procedure above rather than removing the entire installation. Preserve the world backup so a failed experiment can be reversed without data loss.

Compare the remedy with the server type

The right fix depends on more than the wording of the error. A vanilla server has the fewest moving parts: verify the Java release, JAR path, EULA, permissions, and port. A modded or plugin server adds the loader and dependency matrix, so version alignment and binary isolation become central. A local server also exposes firewall, router, power, and private-IP issues that a managed host may handle for you.

The official Java and Bedrock server software is free to download from Minecraft. That does not make every setup cost-free: a self-hosted machine uses your existing hardware and connection, while a managed host charges for its service according to its own plan. Choose managed hosting when maintaining the local router, firewall, uptime, and operating system is the burden you want to remove. Do not assume hosting fixes incompatible Java or mods; the hosted process still needs a compatible runtime and content set.

Use five comparisons before changing platforms: the exact Minecraft and Java versions, vanilla versus a loader, startup versus connectivity, local versus managed hosting, and the specific error branch in the log. This prevents buying a service or reinstalling software when a one-line EULA or path correction is sufficient.

Check the basics before reinstalling

Reinstalling the server JAR is rarely the first move. It can hide the original error and create unnecessary risk to the world. Before replacing anything, copy the world, configuration, and logs; verify the file name and location; check the Java executable; and inspect the first exception. If the download itself appears incomplete, obtain the correct JAR for the intended release, place it in a clean test directory, and run it once before copying mods or a world into that test. A clean vanilla test separates a damaged download or runtime problem from a content problem.

Keep the original installation untouched while testing. Once a clean instance starts, add the world and components one at a time, checking the log after each change. This creates a known-good rollback point and avoids destroying evidence that could identify the cause.

A clean, repeatable recovery sequence

Use this order when the message is unclear or several changes have been made at once:

  1. Stop the server and copy the world, configuration, and logs to a backup location.
  2. Capture the first console exception and inspect logs/latest.log.
  3. Run java -version through the same launch context and compare it with the exact Minecraft release requirement.
  4. Change into the folder containing the JAR, list the files, and run the exact filename.
  5. If first-run files appear, set eula=true in that folder and rerun.
  6. For access errors, move the installation to a writable user-owned directory and check file locks.
  7. For Address already in use, free the port or change it consistently in server.properties, the firewall, and the router.
  8. For a named mod or plugin, remove the newest addition and reintroduce components in small groups.
  9. Once the console shows a running server, test locally before troubleshooting remote access.

Do not use RAM as the first diagnosis

There is no universal RAM figure in the cited official setup material. Memory needs vary with the Minecraft release, world, mods, player count, and host. If the log clearly reports a memory or allocation failure, investigate that message in its own branch. Otherwise, changing memory flags before checking Java, the EULA, paths, permissions, ports, and content compatibility can obscure the original fault.

When local hosting is the wrong fit

Self-hosting gives you control over the JAR, files, mods, firewall, and router, but you must maintain every layer. A managed host can remove much of the local router and power-management work, yet the server software still has to use a Java release and mod or plugin set compatible with the Minecraft version. Whichever arrangement you choose, the diagnostic split remains the same: first prove that the process starts, then prove that the listening port is reachable from the players’ network.

Prevent the next failed launch

  • Record the Minecraft release, Java version, loader, and mod or plugin versions before updating.
  • Keep the launch script in the server directory or explicitly set its working directory.
  • Back up the world before changing loaders, adding content, or editing server.properties.
  • Change one major variable at a time so the first new log error identifies the cause.
  • After a port change, update the firewall and router immediately and test with localhost before inviting remote players.
  • Retain logs/latest.log from a failed start; the first exception is often the shortest route to the fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Minecraft server say it failed to load eula.txt?

The first launch normally creates eula.txt and stops. Open the file beside the server JAR, change only eula=false to eula=true, save it, and run the same command again. If it still cannot find the file, check the working directory and make sure the editor did not create an extra extension.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Java version does my Minecraft server need?

Use the requirement for the exact Minecraft release. Minecraft’s 1.18 documentation specified Java 17 or newer for custom setups, while the Java Edition 26.1 release notes require Java 25. Run java -version in the same account and shell used to launch the server, or call the intended Java executable by its full path.

Why does the server start but my friends cannot join?

That is usually a connectivity issue rather than a startup issue. First connect on the host with localhost. If that works, allow the server through the host firewall, forward the configured port to the host’s current private IP, and have players use the correct public address and port. The default Java port is 25565 when unchanged.

How do I fix “Address already in use”?

Another process owns the configured port. Stop the competing server or service, or change the port in server.properties to an unused value. Then update firewall and router rules and the address players use. Port forwarding alone does not fix a local binding conflict.

My server hangs during startup. Should I kill it?

Do not rely on a long pause alone. Compare the console with logs/latest.log and look for a repeating exception, a named mod, or a line showing that startup completed. If it reaches a running state, test localhost before changing files. Back up the world before isolating recent additions.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell whether a mod or plugin is the cause?

Back up the server, move the most recently added or updated component out of its load directory, and restart. If the server starts, add components back in small groups, dividing a failing group until you identify the individual incompatibility or missing dependency. Match every component to the Minecraft version and loader named in the log.

Should I allocate more RAM when the server will not start?

Not automatically. The appropriate memory depends on the release, world, mods, player count, and host, and no universal figure is published in the official setup material cited here. Change memory settings only when the log explicitly reports an allocation or memory failure.

Is reinstalling the server JAR the best fix?

Usually no. Save the world, configuration, and logs first; then check the first exception, Java executable, JAR path, EULA, permissions, and port. If the download appears incomplete, test the correct JAR in a clean directory before restoring the world or adding mods.

The Bottom Line

Read the first meaningful console error and logs/latest.log, verify the Java release and JAR path, accept the EULA in the correct folder, then fix the specific permission, port, or mod branch. Once the console shows a running server, test localhost; only then troubleshoot firewall and router access for remote players.
