What “crossplay” means for DayZ
Crossplay is not simply a question of whether DayZ exists on two devices. The exact client, platform network, server type and permitted input method all determine whether two players can enter the same session.
Bohemia Interactive’s official FAQ says DayZ is available on PC, Xbox and PlayStation. Its historical explanation for not mixing PC and console players was direct: “That’s unlikely. While it’s perfectly viable from a technological perspective, we’d rather not mix PC and console players because it would cause a noticeable disbalance in gameplay.” The FAQ also cited voice-chat and reporting concerns.

That statement rules out treating DayZ as a single universal crossplay pool. It does not, by itself, describe every later platform arrangement. In particular, 2026 Xbox/Microsoft Store updates describe a narrower Xbox-side connection model that has different rules from the Steam version.

The distinction between PC editions matters. “PC” is not one interchangeable DayZ client: a Steam installation and the Microsoft Store PC client belong to different platform arrangements. Check the store version and the server-browser labels before purchasing the game or a private server for a group.

Current 2026 update material describes the Microsoft Store PC version as able to access Xbox-side servers. This should be understood as an Xbox ecosystem feature, not as evidence that Steam players can join Xbox servers or that PlayStation has been added to the same network.
Input mode is part of the compatibility rule
The same update material reported that the Microsoft Store PC client was restricted to keyboard-and-mouse servers. A bug temporarily allowed it to enter controller-only servers, and that behavior was being fixed. In other words, seeing a server in a browser is not enough: the server’s input policy can block a technically compatible client.
- A Microsoft Store PC player should look for servers marked for keyboard and mouse.
- An Xbox player should select servers whose input rules match the controller setup.
- If a server is visible but refuses the connection, read its platform and input labels before changing network settings.
Which DayZ server type fits your group?
Official servers
Official servers are the simplest way to play without renting infrastructure. Their important limitation for a crossplay group is that the server cannot override the platform boundaries described above. A server being public does not make Steam, Xbox and PlayStation clients interchangeable.

Community servers
Community servers can apply their own names, rules and presentation, but crossplay still depends on the client ecosystem and the server’s platform and input restrictions. Read the browser labels rather than relying on a community server’s name or a friend’s assumption that “PC” includes every PC edition.

Bohemia’s private-console FAQ defines a private server as “a customised online game session.” Console players rent these servers from Nitrado; all console servers are hosted by that partner, so the owner does not need to keep a personal PC running the server.
Dedicated PC servers
A dedicated PC server is a separate installation that you operate on Windows Server, Windows 10 or newer, or Linux. It gives you control of the server process and hardware, but it requires a suitable machine and more administration than a rented console server.
How to set up a private DayZ console server
These controls come from Bohemia Interactive’s private-console documentation. The exact appearance of the Nitrado web interface, smartphone app and Xbox Microsoft Store app can change, but the functions are the same.
- Rent the console server through Nitrado. Select a DayZ console server rather than a PC dedicated-server product. Bohemia identifies Nitrado as the hosting partner for console servers.
- Give the server a name and, if needed, a password. A password keeps the session limited to the people you invite. Share it only after confirming that every player is using a compatible platform ecosystem.
- Set the clock behavior. Configure the in-game time and time acceleration. These settings determine how quickly the DayZ world moves through its day-night cycle.
- Choose the player limit. The private-console FAQ documents configuration up to 100 players. That is a server setting, not a guarantee that a particular console, connection or configuration will perform well at the limit.
- Select the camera perspective. Choose first-person or third-person mode for the session. Make this decision before inviting players because it changes the rules of the shared world.
- Decide how persistence will work. You can wipe the server or preserve its persistent state. A wipe removes the existing world state; preserving it lets the group continue its established base and inventory progress.
- Use the administrative tools. The documented controls include reading in-game logs and sending server messages. Administration is available through the Nitrado web interface, smartphone app and Xbox Microsoft Store app.
- Test the actual join path. Have one player search the server using the intended platform and input mode, then confirm that the name, password, perspective and persistence settings behave as expected before organizing a large session.
Private console server limits and player capacity
Two different capacity figures appear in Bohemia’s official material and they describe different contexts. The current official DayZ game page advertises up to 60 players per server. The 2019 private-console FAQ documents a configurable private console server with a maximum of up to 100 players.

Because the figures come from different pages and dates, do not combine them into a claim that every server supports 100 players. Confirm the capacity shown in the current rental panel and consider the group’s connection quality and administrative workload.
Dedicated PC server requirements
Bohemia’s technical documentation lists the following baseline requirements for a dedicated DayZ PC server. They are minimum documented specifications, not a performance guarantee for a heavily populated or modified server.

Setting up the PC host
- Choose Windows or Linux. The documented support range includes Windows Server 2012–2016, Windows 10 and newer, and Linux.
- Provide the baseline hardware. Verify the processor, at least 6 GB of RAM and 2.5 GB of available storage before installing server files. Prefer an SSD because Bohemia recommends it for logs and installation.
- Install the dedicated-server package using Bohemia’s technical documentation. The supplied requirements identify supported systems and hardware but do not establish a universal command sequence; follow the instructions for the operating system and server build you are actually using.
- Configure access and administration. Set the server’s identity, player limit and camera policy in the configuration files or management interface supplied with your server build. Keep administrative credentials private.
- Start with a small test group. Confirm that the server appears in the browser and that players can connect before adding modifications or inviting the full community.
- Monitor logs and storage. Logs can grow over time, which is why SSD storage is recommended. Reserve enough space for the operating system, server files and ongoing logs rather than treating 2.5 GB as a complete long-term allocation.
Do you need a PC to host DayZ?
No, not for a private console server. Bohemia’s private-console FAQ says console servers are hosted by Nitrado, and administration is available through a web interface, smartphone app and Xbox Microsoft Store app. You can therefore rent and manage a console session without running the server from your own computer.

Yes, you need a PC-class host or server for a dedicated PC installation. That machine must meet the documented operating-system, processor, memory and storage requirements. A console owner cannot turn the console itself into the dedicated PC server described by the technical documentation.

“My Steam friend cannot join my Xbox server.”
Check the PC edition first. The Microsoft Store PC client and Steam are different ecosystem cases. The 2026 Xbox-side arrangement does not establish Steam-to-Xbox compatibility, and the historical FAQ rejected broad PC-console mixing. If one player owns Steam DayZ and the other plays on Xbox, choose a server only after a current browser label explicitly confirms that pairing; otherwise assume it will not work.

“My PlayStation and Xbox friends cannot find the same server.”
No official material identified here confirms PlayStation-to-Xbox DayZ play. Treat the platforms as separate. A shared server name or the presence of both console brands in a discussion does not prove that their clients can connect.
“The Microsoft Store PC client sees the server but cannot enter.”
Inspect the input label. The reported restriction is keyboard-and-mouse servers for the Microsoft Store PC version, while a bug had allowed controller-only access and was being fixed. Select a server whose input policy matches the device in use instead of assuming that visibility means eligibility.

Check whether the administrator chose wipe or preserve when configuring persistence. Wiping creates a new world state; preserving keeps the existing one. Confirm this setting before changing it because a wipe affects every player on that server.
“The server is too large or unstable for the group.”
The 100-player figure belongs to the 2019 private-console documentation, while the current game page advertises up to 60 players generally. Reduce the configured population, test with a smaller group and review the hosting plan rather than treating either figure as a performance guarantee.
Costs, ownership and planning
Buying DayZ and renting a private server are separate decisions. A private console server involves a recurring hosting charge through Nitrado; the official material cited here does not establish a current universal price. Dedicated PC hosting shifts the cost to the machine, storage, bandwidth and administration you provide.
- Choose official servers when you want the least administration and do not need a passworded world.
- Choose a private console server when your group needs an invitation-only session, configurable time, camera rules, persistence controls, logs or broadcast messages without operating a PC host.
- Choose a dedicated PC server when you need control of the host environment and can maintain the required Windows or Linux system.
- Confirm the ecosystem before paying. A server rental cannot make Steam, Xbox and PlayStation clients cross-compatible if the platform networks do not support that pairing.
A practical decision checklist
- List every player’s exact client: Steam PC, Microsoft Store PC, Xbox or PlayStation.
- Separate Steam PC from the Microsoft Store PC client; do not label both simply “PC.”
- Check the server browser for platform and input-mode labels.
- For a console-only private world, rent through Nitrado and configure the password, time, player limit, camera and persistence settings.
- For a dedicated PC host, verify the documented operating system and baseline hardware, then follow the technical instructions for that server build.
- Run a two-player connection test before committing to a large or persistent community.
The safest answer to “Is DayZ crossplay?” is therefore conditional: DayZ spans PC, Xbox and PlayStation, but broad crossplay is not supported by the available evidence. The Microsoft Store PC–Xbox connection described in 2026 is a narrower Xbox ecosystem arrangement with input restrictions, not a universal network.
