If a Minecraft server JAR will not start, do not double-click it. Open Command Prompt, PowerShell, or a terminal, change to the folder that contains the JAR, and run the exact filename with Java. The resulting message usually identifies one of five causes: a wrong path or filename, an incompatible Java runtime, the first-run EULA requirement, a file/configuration problem, or a permissions/security issue. Fix that specific cause first; port forwarding cannot repair a server process that exits before it starts listening.

Start with a visible error, not a disappearing window
A window that flashes and closes has not given you a diagnosis. Launching from a terminal keeps the complete error on screen and prevents you from guessing.

- Check which Java runtime that terminal will use by running
java -version. Minecraft’s official server-download guidance requires a compatible Java Runtime Environment (JRE) for the Java Edition server JAR. The newest Java release is not automatically correct for every older Minecraft server release, so match the runtime to the release you are running. - Change into the server directory. Minecraft Help’s Windows example is
cd C:UsersAdminDesktopMinecraft Server. Keep the path quoted when it contains spaces. - Run the exact JAR filename:
java -jar "name of your jar".jar. Addnoguionly when you want the console-only mode described on the official download page:java -jar "name of your jar".jar nogui.
Do not substitute server.jar unless that is actually the file’s name. A downloaded file may contain a versioned name, and the command must match it exactly.
What a normal first launch does
The first run is not always a successful start. Minecraft Help documents messages such as “failed to load properties” and “failed to load eula.txt” during initial setup. The server creates its initial files, then stops until you record acceptance of the End User License Agreement.

Complete the EULA setup
- Run the JAR once from the server folder and let it finish or stop.
- Open the newly created
eula.txtin a plain-text editor. - Review the EULA, change
eula=falsetoeula=true, and save the file. - Make sure the file is saved in the same server folder and is named exactly
eula.txt, noteula.txt.txt. - Run the same Java command again.
The setup also generates server.properties. You can edit that file with a text editor after it exists. Accepting the EULA only clears the agreement gate; it does not correct a Java class-version error, a bad path, or a missing JAR.
When the EULA error keeps returning
If the console still says that you need to agree to the EULA, inspect the file in the directory from which the process is actually running. A script, shortcut, service, or hosting panel can choose a different working directory from the one you opened in Explorer. Set that launcher to start in the server folder, or use an absolute path for the server directory. Check that the file contains one plain-text line with eula=true and that your account can read it.

Fix “Unable to access jarfile” precisely
This message is a path problem, not a Minecraft configuration problem. Java has started, but it cannot open the file named after -jar.
Confirm the working directory
After changing directories, list the contents and compare the displayed filename with your command. On Windows, dir lists the folder; on macOS or Linux, ls does. Look for the full extension. File managers can hide known extensions, making a file that appears to be server.jar actually server.jar.jar or a differently named download.

Use quoting and the exact name
Spaces require quotation marks. For example:
java -jar "minecraft_server_version.jar"If the JAR is in another location, either change directories first or provide its absolute path:
java -jar "C:UsersAdminDesktopMinecraft Serverminecraft_server_version.jar"On a case-sensitive filesystem, capitalization must also match. If you renamed or moved the JAR, update the command or the launcher rather than continuing to call the old name.

Fix UnsupportedClassVersionError
The diagnostic usually includes wording such as “compiled by a more recent version … this version … only recognizes class file versions up to …”. The JAR was built for a newer Java class-file level than the runtime selected by your command.
Match Java to the server release
- Note the Minecraft server release represented by the JAR.
- Install a Java runtime that supports that release, following the release’s documented requirement rather than choosing solely by “latest” status.
- Close and reopen the terminal if you changed the installation or PATH.
- Run
java -versionagain in the terminal that will launch the server. - Run the JAR command again.
Multiple Java installations are common. The executable found through PATH may not be the one you just installed. On Windows, where java shows candidates; on macOS or Linux, which java shows the executable being resolved. If necessary, invoke the intended Java executable by its full path in the launch command. Do not try to repair a class-version mismatch by editing server.properties; that file does not change the bytecode the runtime can understand.

Keep the server in a reliable working folder
The server uses its working directory for eula.txt, server.properties, world data, logs, and extracted libraries. Running from an unrelated directory can make the files appear to be missing even when they exist elsewhere.
Choose a dedicated, writable directory
- Create a folder used only for this server, rather than placing it in a protected operating-system directory.
- Ensure the account running Java has permission to read the JAR and write new files, subfolders, and logs.
- Keep adequate free disk space. Library extraction and world generation can require substantially more space than the JAR itself.
- Avoid launching directly from a temporary download location that may be cleaned, synchronized, or restricted.
Understand bundled-library extraction
Mojang’s 1.18 notes explain that the bundled server unpacks libraries at startup into bundlerRepoDir, which defaults to the working directory. If startup stops during extraction or file creation, check that directory first. Antivirus or endpoint-security software may quarantine a newly created file; cloud-sync tools can also create conflicts; read-only permissions and filesystem path restrictions can block writes. Inspect quarantine and security logs before weakening protection, and grant access only to the dedicated server folder when your security software supports an exception.
Repair server.properties without creating a new problem
On the first launch, the file may not exist yet, so “failed to load properties” can be part of normal generation. After it is generated, each setting must use one plain-text key=value line. Do not paste formatted text from a word processor, add quotation marks around values unless the setting requires them, or join multiple settings on one line.
If an edit prevents startup
- Stop the server completely.
- Copy the current
server.propertiesas a backup. - Restore the last known-good copy, if one exists.
- If no good copy exists, move the malformed file out of the server folder and launch once so a clean file can be generated.
- Reapply settings gradually, starting the server after a small group of changes so the offending line is identifiable.
Keep the EULA file separate from the properties file. Changing a world, difficulty, or network setting cannot satisfy the EULA requirement.

Use a startup script that preserves errors
A script reduces filename and directory mistakes, but it must explicitly select the server folder. A minimal Windows batch file placed in that folder can be:

pauseReplace the example filename with the actual JAR name. The pause command leaves the window open after an error so you can copy the complete message. If you maintain separate Java installations, replace java with the full path to the intended executable. On other operating systems, use an equivalent shell script that changes to its own directory before invoking Java and leaves the terminal available for inspection.

Do not hide errors by redirecting all output until the server is known to start. Once it is stable, save logs and keep the launch command documented so a later Java or file change can be traced.
Separate startup failures from connection failures
Port forwarding is relevant only after the server has completed startup and is listening. A server that exits during Java loading, EULA processing, configuration parsing, or library extraction cannot be reached from another computer, regardless of router settings.
Verify local startup first
- Run the JAR from the host’s terminal.
- Wait for the console to report that startup has completed and the server is listening.
- From a Minecraft client on the same local network, test the host’s local address and configured port.
- Only after local access works, test from outside the local network.
Minecraft’s official pages identify 25565 as the default Java server port. If you changed the port in the server configuration, use that value instead. External players may require an inbound rule in the host firewall and a matching router port-forwarding rule. Open only the required port, and confirm that the host’s local address has not changed before troubleshooting the router.
Interpret the result
- No console listening message: return to the JAR, Java, EULA, configuration, or filesystem sections.
- Local clients connect, remote clients cannot: investigate firewall, router forwarding, the public address, and whether the internet service permits inbound connections.
- Both local and remote clients fail after a confirmed listening state: check the configured port, bind address, firewall rule, and the exact client error.
Choose the remedy by failure class

Managed hosting can remove local Java and router maintenance, but it does not make an invalid JAR filename or a false EULA setting valid. Confirm the service’s supported Minecraft releases and file-management controls before moving a world.

- Open a terminal so the full error remains visible.
- Run
java -versionand confirm that this is the runtime intended for the server release. - Change to the directory that contains the JAR.
- List the directory and copy the exact filename, including its extension and capitalization.
- Run
java -jar "exact-file-name.jar", addingnoguionly for console-only operation. - If first-run files are generated, edit

- Repeat the launch and capture the complete new message before making another change.
- Only after the console shows a listening server, test local connectivity and then configure external firewall/router access on the required port.
This order prevents a network change from masking a startup problem and keeps each fix tied to evidence from the server’s own console.
