Minecraft Revelation Modpack Guide: Progression and Server Setup

A complete FTB Revelation 1.12.2 guide covering launcher installation, the pack’s open-ended progression, release matching, RAM and Java requirements, and official server setup.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FTB Revelation is a Minecraft 1.12.2 kitchen-sink modpack that lets a group combine technology, magic, exploration, combat, and building without following a single required quest line. The safest beginner path is to install it through a modpack launcher, begin with shelter, food, tools, storage, and ore, then choose a specialization. For multiplayer, install the exact same Revelation release on every client and on the server, use the official FTB server installer for that release, and run it with Java 8.

There is an important version distinction: the CurseForge listing identifies FTB Revelation-3.4.0.zip as its latest listed client release, dated December 8, 2020, while the separate official FTB server-files listing includes server release 3.7.0 (ID 12180) and older server packages. Decide which release your group will use before anyone creates a world.

What FTB Revelation is

Feed The Beast describes Revelation as “a general all-purpose pack.” That means it is deliberately broad rather than built around one mod or one end-game objective. Its 1.12.2 collection supports technology, magic, exploration, combat, construction, storage, transport, and automation in the same world. The pack description also identifies performance and server stability as design goals.

That breadth is the main reason to choose Revelation. A technology-focused player can build machines and power systems while another player studies magic, and a third can concentrate on dimensions, travel, building, or resource gathering. You are not forced into a prescribed order, but the number of available systems can make the first hours feel unfocused. A small personal plan prevents that without turning the pack into a checklist.

CurseForge and FTB report 3,034,690 total downloads on the page snapshot accessed in 2026. That figure describes downloads of the pack listing, not the number of active worlds or current players.

Client and server releases are listed separately

Do not treat every number shown on an FTB page as the same release channel. The client-facing CurseForge listing is under Minecraft 1.12.2 and shows FTB Revelation-3.4.0.zip, dated December 8, 2020. The official FTB server-files page separately lists server release 3.7.0 with ID 12180, followed by 3.6.0, 3.5.0 beta, 3.4.0, 3.3.0, and 3.2.0.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Where the release appears Release information How to use it
CurseForge client listing FTB Revelation-3.4.0.zip; Minecraft 1.12.2; December 8, 2020 Use this when the launcher offers the listed client pack and your server is running the matching release.
Official FTB server-files listing 3.7.0, ID 12180 Use the server package only when every client can install the corresponding client release.
Older server entries 3.6.0; 3.5.0 beta; 3.4.0; 3.3.0; 3.2.0 Useful for an existing world or a group that intentionally standardizes on an older release.

The practical rule is simple: write down the complete release number before installation, and make the client profile, server files, and any shared configuration agree. A server package being newer on the server-files page does not prove that the same version is available in your chosen client launcher.

Requirements before installing

Own the PC edition of Minecraft

You need the Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition for PC before installing Revelation. The modpack runs through the Java side; owning only a console or mobile edition does not provide the required PC Java installation.

Use Java 8 for this 1.12.2 pack

The Revelation pack page recommends the latest Java 8 release and explicitly says Java 9 is not supported. These are requirements for the documented 1.12.2-era pack, not a general rule for modern Minecraft versions. If your computer has several Java installations, configure the launcher and server start script to use Java 8 rather than assuming the operating system will select it.

Plan memory for the pack

FTB recommends a minimum of 4 GB of RAM for both clients and servers for best performance. That is memory assigned to the game or server process, not a claim that a computer with only 4 GB of total physical memory will run comfortably. Leave enough memory for the operating system and other programs, and close heavy applications before launching a large world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install the client with a launcher

FTB’s getting-started guidance calls a modpack launcher the easiest installation route. The FTB App is the straightforward beginner choice; another launcher is acceptable only if it supports the exact Revelation release you selected.

  1. Install Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition for PC. Start the vanilla Java profile once so the game creates its normal files and the launcher can verify your account.
  2. Install the FTB App or a supported modpack launcher. Sign in with the account that owns the PC edition and allow the launcher to finish its own setup.
  3. Search for FTB Revelation. Confirm that the result is the 1.12.2 pack, then open its version list instead of accepting an unexamined default.
  4. Select the release your group will use. Record the full number, such as 3.4.0, in your server notes. If you are joining an existing server, ask its operator for the release before installing.
  5. Start the installation. Let the launcher download the pack and complete its first initialization. Interrupting this stage can leave an incomplete instance that fails later with missing libraries or mods.
  6. Check Java and memory settings. Point the instance to Java 8 and assign at least the documented 4 GB baseline while preserving operating-system headroom.
  7. Launch the instance once in single-player. Reaching the title screen confirms that the client profile can start before you add a server address or troubleshoot network access.

An older wiki walkthrough documents MultiMC and the FTB Legacy list for Revelation 3.2.1, released October 29, 2019. Treat those instructions as version-era guidance: the menu names and import steps may not match a current FTB App installation, and they are not a mandatory route for a new 3.4.0 or 3.7.0-based setup.

What to do first in a new world

The getting-started guide is optional hand-holding, not a required quest chain. Its own wording makes that clear: “Of course, you do not need to follow this guide to start playing.” Revelation is an open-world sandbox, so your first objectives should reduce risk and create options rather than rush toward an imagined canonical ending.

First-session checklist

  • Claim a defensible location for a temporary shelter.
  • Secure a renewable food source before spending long periods underground.
  • Craft basic tools and a light source, then establish a small storage area.
  • Gather common building materials and enough ore to replace damaged tools.
  • Mark the route between your shelter, mining area, and any useful terrain.
  • Keep separate chests or labeled containers for raw resources, building blocks, food, and equipment.

Those actions are deliberately unglamorous. In a kitchen-sink pack, organization and reliable resupply save more time than chasing an advanced machine or ritual before you understand the surrounding systems.

Choose a direction, not a permanent class

You can switch tracks later. Start with the activity that matches your goal, then borrow infrastructure from the other tracks as needed.

Track Early focus Resource and infrastructure profile Risk and learning load Value on a shared server
Technology Power generation, machines, processing, and automation Requires a steady flow of ores, fuel or power inputs, cables, and machine components; pays back through repeatable processing Moderate setup complexity; usually lower travel risk once a base network exists High: automated processing and shared utilities benefit everyone
Magic Learn one mod’s early altar, ritual, or resource loop at a time Often depends on specific materials, structures, or progression ingredients; keep that system’s documentation nearby Learning is the main cost because each magic system uses its own vocabulary and sequence Medium to high: specialized resources and buffs can support a group, but knowledge is less immediately transferable
Exploration and combat Improve equipment, travel routes, and preparation for dimensions or bosses Consumes food, tools, armor, transport supplies, and replacement gear rather than concentrating on one production line Highest exposure to environmental, dimensional, and combat danger High: mapping, rare-resource runs, and safe routes expand the whole group’s options
Building and quality of life Storage, transport, decoration, lighting, and base utilities Uses large volumes of common blocks and utility components; benefits from whichever technology or magic systems supply them Low direct danger; design and logistics become the learning challenge High: a readable base, shared storage, and transport network reduce friction for every player

Technology route

Begin by deciding what problem the first machine should solve. Ore processing, reliable power, item movement, and storage are more useful than building a complicated factory with no input supply. Establish a small power and processing area, label inputs and outputs, and expand only after you know which materials your group consumes most.

Automation is strongest when it removes a repeated task. A machine line that turns the ores your miners already bring home into usable components has immediate value; a line that depends on rare parts nobody can yet obtain becomes a bottleneck. Leave room around machines for cables, inventories, and future upgrades so that a later redesign does not require dismantling the entire base.

Magic route

Do not try to learn every magic system at once. Pick one, identify its first resource loop, and keep its in-game or external documentation available while you work. Build a dedicated area for its altar, ritual, or other infrastructure so accidental block changes and ordinary base traffic do not interrupt it.

Magic progression often feels slower than basic mining because the limiting factor is understanding the sequence rather than merely collecting more ore. Record which ingredients are consumed, which are reusable, and which steps require a particular location or timing. Once the first loop is stable, add a second system only when the group has a reason to use it.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Exploration and combat route

Explorers should treat equipment replacement and travel infrastructure as part of progression. Secure food, spare tools, armor, and a way to find the way home before entering a dangerous area. Store valuable finds in a safe location before extending the trip, and create recognizable markers or a map record for routes that other players will use.

Dimension or boss preparation is a group project even when one player leads it. Share the required equipment list, establish a staging chest, and agree where recovered items will be stored. That prevents a single death from consuming the only set of gear or the materials needed for the next attempt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Building and quality-of-life route

A builder can progress immediately by improving storage, lighting, paths, workshops, and transport. Do not wait for a complete industrial system: a well-labeled temporary warehouse and a safe route between work areas make every later project faster. As technology or magic becomes available, replace manual chores with item movement, processing, or other utilities that support the build.

A practical progression plan without a quest book

Use milestones that answer a concrete question rather than pretending the pack has one official order.

  1. Can we survive and return? Establish shelter, food, light, basic tools, and a marked route home.
  2. Can we store and replace essentials? Separate resources, create a dependable ore and food supply, and keep spare equipment.
  3. What task is wasting the most time? Choose technology, magic, exploration, or building to solve that specific problem.
  4. Can another player use the result? Label inventories, document inputs, and keep shared utilities accessible rather than hiding them in one private room.
  5. What new risk are we prepared to accept? Expand into deeper automation, a more complex ritual, a dangerous region, or a larger construction project only after the previous milestone is reliable.

This approach preserves Revelation’s open-ended design while giving a group visible progress. It also avoids a common failure mode: collecting dozens of unrelated components because they look important, then discovering that nobody has a stable base, food supply, or storage system.

Set up an FTB Revelation server

Choose the server release first

Open the official Feed The Beast server-files page and select the server package for the release your clients will install. The page lists 3.7.0 (ID 12180) as well as older releases. Do not download the newest server entry automatically if your launcher is using the 3.4.0 client listing; those releases must be deliberately aligned.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install the server files

  1. Create a dedicated server folder. Use a location with enough free storage and regular backup access. Avoid placing the live world inside a temporary downloads folder.
  2. Download the platform installer for the selected release. The official Windows instructions provide an Invoke-WebRequest command; the macOS instructions provide a curl command. Use the command shown for your operating system and release rather than substituting a different package.
  3. Place the installer in the server folder. Run it there so generated libraries, configuration files, scripts, and the world remain together.
  4. Run the installer. Let it finish downloading and unpacking the server files. If it stops before generating the launch files, check that Java 8 is installed and that the account has write permission to the folder.
  5. Accept the EULA when prompted. Read the generated EULA file, set its acceptance as required by the installer, and save the change before attempting another start.
  6. Start the generated server launch script. Use the Windows or macOS script created by the installer, not an arbitrary vanilla server command. The script carries the pack’s libraries and launch parameters.
  7. Record the Java executable. Document the Java 8 path used by the launch script so a future update, scheduled task, or replacement administrator does not accidentally run the server with Java 9.
  8. Stop the server cleanly before maintenance. Use the server console’s normal stop command, wait for the world to save, and then copy the world and configuration files to a backup location.

The installer and launch script are release-specific. If an update changes the script or libraries, keep a copy of the working configuration and verify the selected release before replacing anything.

Make the server reachable to friends

For a private group, decide whether the server will run on a computer in someone’s home or on a managed machine. A home server requires a reliable host that stays online, local firewall permission for the server process, and router configuration that forwards the server’s listening port to that host. A managed machine shifts those operating-system and network tasks to the provider, but you still need to confirm that it supports the chosen Revelation release, Java 8, the documented memory baseline, backups, and your players’ region.

Give friends the server address only after the host can connect locally and the server console reports that the world has finished loading. Keep administrative credentials private, use a whitelist when the server is not public, and schedule backups before experimenting with a new dimension, major configuration change, or release upgrade.

Keep client and server versions synchronized

Every player should install the same Revelation release and use the same server-side pack files. A mismatch can appear as missing-mod errors, rejected connections, registry differences, or a world that loads with missing blocks and items.

  • Write the release number in the server welcome message or group notes.
  • Keep a copy of the installer name and the Java executable path used to launch the server.
  • Back up the world, configuration directory, and scripts before changing releases.
  • Test an upgrade on a copied world first; never make the first launch of a new release your only copy of a valuable world.
  • Have every client close the game and update together rather than allowing one player to join with an older profile.

Common symptoms and fixes

Symptom Likely cause First corrective action
The launcher refuses to start the pack Wrong Java generation, incomplete initialization, or an interrupted download Select Java 8, let the instance finish its first setup, then retry before changing other settings.
The server starts and immediately stops EULA not accepted, Java path error, or a failed installer run Read the console output, confirm the EULA setting, verify the Java 8 executable, and rerun the release installer in the dedicated folder.
Clients are rejected for missing or different mods Client and server release numbers do not match Compare the complete release recorded by the operator with every client profile and reinstall the outlier.
Players cannot connect from outside the host’s network Firewall or router forwarding is incomplete, or the host address is wrong Test locally first, then check the host firewall, router forwarding target, and the address distributed to players.
The world appears damaged after an upgrade Upgrade performed without a rollback copy or with incompatible configuration changes Stop the server, restore the pre-upgrade backup, and test the new release on a duplicate world.

Operating a cooperative Revelation world

Agree on a few conventions before the first long session. Decide which chests are communal, where mined ores go, who can alter shared machines, and how rare exploration finds are distributed. Labeling and access rules matter more in a broad pack because several progression systems may draw on the same ingredients.

Keep the first base modular. A technology room, a magic workspace, a storage hall, and a safe equipment area can share a central food and transport network without forcing every player into the same specialty. When the group eventually outgrows the starter base, move systems one at a time and preserve the original storage and backup plan until the new layout has been tested.

Finally, treat server maintenance as part of progression. A documented release, Java 8 path, clean shutdown habit, and tested backups protect the hours invested in exploration and construction. They also make it easier for a new operator to take over when the original host is unavailable.
