To enable GD for WordPress, load the gd PHP extension in the same PHP runtime that serves your site, restart or reload that runtime when required, and then verify the result at Dashboard > Tools > Site Health > Info > Media Handling. That panel shows whether WordPress can use GD, the GD version, and the image formats compiled into it. If Imagick is active, WordPress may use Imagick instead, even when GD is installed.

What the GD library does in WordPress
GD is a PHP graphics extension. WordPress uses it through the WP_Image_Editor_GD editor to create image sizes, generate thumbnails, rotate or crop pictures, and process uploads. The extension is part of PHP rather than a WordPress plugin or a setting in the WordPress dashboard.

WordPress documentation describes the GD PHP library as included by default since PHP 4.3, so it is available in many hosting environments. “Available” does not necessarily mean enabled in the PHP handler serving your particular site, however. A host can run several PHP versions, disable extensions per account, or use a web PHP configuration that differs from the command-line configuration.
If GD is not loaded, changing Media settings in WordPress cannot install it. The PHP runtime, its build, or your hosting account must be changed first.

Check whether WordPress already sees GD
- Sign in to WordPress with an account that can view Site Health.
- Open Tools > Site Health.
- Select the Info tab.
- Expand Media Handling.
- Record the active image editor, the reported GD version, and the supported formats.
This is the authoritative WordPress-side check because it examines the PHP environment used by the site itself. Do not rely only on a command-line PHP check or on what your hosting control panel says. The web server may use a different PHP version, handler, or configuration file.
If Media Handling identifies GD and lists a version, WordPress can load the extension. If it identifies Imagick instead, GD might still be installed but is not the editor WordPress selected. If no GD version or format list appears, continue with the PHP and hosting checks below.

GD as the selected editor
WordPress core checks that the gd extension is loaded and that the gd_info() function exists before selecting its GD editor. When those checks pass and GD is selected, WordPress uses WP_Image_Editor_GD for image operations.
Imagick instead of GD
WordPress can use Imagick when that extension is available and selected. In that situation, the presence of GD is not proof that GD is handling uploads. Check the active editor shown in Media Handling before troubleshooting a GD-specific behavior.

There is no universal rule that one editor is always better. The practical choice depends on which extension your host enables, the formats exposed by that build, and the memory and performance limits of your PHP environment.
Before enabling GD, identify the PHP environment
Find the PHP version used by the website
Use the PHP version shown by your hosting panel or by WordPress Site Health, then make sure any change targets that exact version. A site running PHP 8.x through PHP-FPM can be unaffected by a GD extension enabled for an older PHP 7.x installation.

Distinguish web PHP from command-line PHP
Many servers have separate configurations for command-line PHP and the web server. A command-line report can show GD as loaded while the PHP handler serving WordPress has it disabled, or the reverse. Treat the Media Handling report in WordPress as the final test for the website.
Check whether you control PHP
- Managed or shared hosting: You may be limited to a version selector or an extension checklist. The provider may have to enable GD for you.
- Virtual or dedicated server: You can usually change the PHP installation, its modules, and the web-service configuration, subject to your operating system and PHP handler.
- Local Windows installation: You normally edit the active
php.iniand load the GD DLL, then restart the service that runs PHP.
The exact control-panel labels and restart procedure vary by provider, operating system, PHP version, Apache or Nginx setup, and whether PHP-FPM is used.
Enable GD on managed or shared WordPress hosting
When you cannot edit the PHP installation yourself, ask the host to enable the extension rather than changing WordPress files.
- Open the hosting panel’s PHP version, PHP extensions, or runtime settings area, if one is provided.
- Select the PHP version assigned to the WordPress domain.
- Enable the extension named
gdorphp-gd. Some panels expose it as a graphics or image-processing module. - Apply the change and allow the provider’s PHP handler to reload. If the panel does not offer a reload control, wait for the host’s change to propagate.
- Return to Tools > Site Health > Info > Media Handling and check for a GD version and format list.
If the panel has no extension control, send support the domain, the PHP version, and a request to enable GD for the web PHP handler. Ask the provider to confirm which PHP handler serves the domain and whether the account is permitted to load the extension. WordPress documentation specifically notes that enabling extensions may require contacting the host or editing php.ini only where the environment permits it.

Do not assume that installing a WordPress image plugin will supply GD. Plugins can use an available editor, but they cannot load a PHP module that the server has disabled.
Enable GD in a self-managed PHP installation
PHP build options from PHP 7.4 onward
PHP’s installation documentation changed the build option name in PHP 7.4.0. The option --with-gd became --enable-gd, which controls whether GD is enabled at all. PHP also documents --with-external-gd when you want to use an external libgd instead of PHP’s bundled library.

If you compile PHP, apply the option that matches your PHP version and build plan, then rebuild or install that PHP version and ensure the web handler uses it. A build change is not complete until the running web process has loaded the resulting extension.
Check GD’s build dependencies
GD’s format capabilities depend on the GD version and the libraries linked into the build. PHP’s requirements specify libgd 2.1.0 or higher, or PHP’s bundled GD, and note a zlib requirement of at least 1.2.0.4. Other format libraries and compile choices affect the final capability set.

Because of those dependencies, do not assume that every GD installation supports JPEG, PNG, WebP, or another format. Read the supported-format list in Site Health after enabling the extension. If a required format is absent, the remedy is a PHP/GD build with the necessary libraries, not a WordPress media setting.
Attach the extension to the web PHP handler
After installing or rebuilding GD, make sure the PHP handler serving the domain loads that installation. PHP-FPM pools, Apache modules, and other handlers can point to different PHP versions. Reload or restart the relevant PHP service when your environment requires it; the service name and command are platform-specific.
Enable GD on Windows
- Locate the
php.inifile used by the web server, not merely the one used by command-line PHP. - Open the file and enable the GD extension entry for that PHP installation.
- For current Windows PHP builds, load
php_gd.dll. Before PHP 8.0, the DLL was namedphp_gd2.dll. - Save the configuration and restart the web server or PHP handler so it reads the changed file.
- Check WordPress’s Media Handling section and perform a real upload or edit.
The DLL name must match the PHP version and architecture installed on the server. If you edit a different php.ini than the one read by the web process, the change will appear to do nothing. Site Health is the simplest way to detect that mismatch.
Reload PHP after changing the extension
PHP reads extension settings when the relevant process starts. Depending on the server, that may mean restarting Apache, reloading PHP-FPM, restarting a Windows web service, or using a host panel’s apply button. There is no single command that works on every WordPress installation.

After the reload, refresh Site Health rather than relying on a cached dashboard page. If GD still does not appear, verify the PHP version, the active configuration file, the handler serving the domain, and whether the host blocks custom extensions.

- Open Media > Add New and upload a normal image in a format listed as supported by GD.
- Open the uploaded item in the Media Library and confirm that WordPress creates its expected image metadata and sizes.
- Use an image edit operation such as a crop or rotation, then save it.
- Return to Site Health and confirm that the active editor and GD information remain present.
A successful upload alone is not conclusive if Imagick is active. Use the active-editor value to determine which library performed the operation. Testing a format that is absent from GD’s supported list can also produce a misleading failure; choose a format the running build explicitly reports.
Troubleshoot the most common GD errors
“GD library is missing” after enabling it
- Confirm that you enabled GD for the PHP version assigned to the domain.
- Check that the web server or PHP handler was reloaded.
- Verify the active
php.inirather than a command-line configuration. - Ask the host whether extensions are restricted at the account level.
Command-line PHP reports GD, but WordPress does not
This normally indicates different PHP runtimes or configuration files. Compare the PHP version and handler used by the website, then have the provider confirm the web runtime. The WordPress Site Health result takes precedence over a CLI result for a WordPress diagnosis.
Imagick is active and you expected GD
WordPress may select Imagick when it is available. This is not necessarily an error. If you specifically need GD, confirm that GD is loaded and that your WordPress and hosting configuration allow it to be selected. If the task only requires image processing, test the active editor rather than forcing a particular library without a functional reason.
Only one image format fails
Inspect the supported-format list under Media Handling. GD capabilities vary with the GD/libgd build and linked libraries. A missing format points to a build-dependency or compilation issue, not an absent WordPress checkbox.
GD disappears after a PHP upgrade
PHP extensions are installed per PHP version. Upgrading PHP can leave the new runtime without the module that was enabled in the old one. Recheck the new runtime’s extensions, rebuild or install GD for that version, reload its handler, and verify Site Health again.
When to request host support
Contact the provider when you cannot select GD, cannot identify the web PHP configuration, or lack permission to install extensions. Include:
- The domain and WordPress installation involved.
- The PHP version reported for the site.
- The exact Site Health path and what Media Handling currently reports.
- Whether Imagick is active.
- The image format or operation that fails.
Ask the provider to confirm that the gd extension and gd_info() are available to the web PHP handler, and to state which GD-supported formats are compiled into that runtime. This gives you a server-side answer instead of repeated WordPress setting changes.

Format planning
Use the formats displayed by Site Health as the capability contract for that server. If a workflow depends on a particular format, test it after every PHP or hosting change because GD capabilities are build-dependent.
Memory and processing limits
Image manipulation consumes PHP and server resources. The practical limit depends on image dimensions, concurrent requests, the active editor, and the host’s PHP limits. The available facts do not establish a universal memory threshold, so measure failures in your own environment and involve the host when large images time out or exhaust resources.
Keeping the configuration consistent
Document the PHP version, active editor, GD version, and supported formats shown in Site Health. Recheck them after PHP upgrades, migrations, or changes to the web handler. This prevents a working development configuration from being mistaken for the production configuration.
