A Ravager is a raid-only hostile beast that appears during village raids, usually in the later waves. It can carry another raider, shrugs off most knockback and can overwhelm an unprepared village quickly. The safest general method is to protect villagers first, separate or kill the rider, then attack the Ravager from high ground or through a two-block opening with a bow. Shields, trenches, lava traps and iron golems can make the fight manageable, but each has risks.

What is a Ravager in Minecraft?
Ravagers are large hostile beasts tied exclusively to village raids. They do not normally spawn in the Overworld as independent mobs. When a raid reaches a Ravager wave, the beast joins the raiding force and may be accompanied by a rider.

Which mobs can ride a Ravager?
- A pillager can ride a Ravager.
- An evoker can ride a Ravager, creating a dangerous combination of heavy melee pressure and vex summoning.
- A vindicator can ride a Ravager in Java Edition. Bedrock Edition does not use vindicator riders.
The rider and the beast are separate targets. Killing the rider removes the additional ranged, vex or melee threat, but the Ravager itself remains hostile until defeated.
Why Ravagers are dangerous
- They resist knockback, so ordinary sword hits and arrows do not reliably keep them away.
- They can damage crops and leaves while pursuing targets, making an exposed village harder to defend.
- Their roar can knock a player backward and deal damage, even when the player is trying to use a shield.
- On Hard difficulty, an unarmored Ravager hit deals 18 HP, equal to nine hearts.
The Minecraft Wiki raid tutorial reports that a Power V bow takes about five to six arrows to defeat a Ravager. Treat that as a tutorial combat estimate rather than a universal result: armor, distance, critical hits, difficulty, game edition and version can change the number of shots.

How many waves are in a Minecraft raid?
Raid length depends on difficulty. The standard wave counts described by the Minecraft Wiki are:
| Difficulty | Standard waves | Ravager timing and composition |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | 3 | Ravagers appear in the later portion of the raid; exact group composition can vary by edition and version. |
| Normal | 5 | Later waves add Ravagers, witches and eventually evokers. |
| Hard | 7 | The longest standard raid, with the strongest late-wave combinations and mounted Ravagers. |
A higher Bad Omen level can add one extra wave whose composition matches the final wave. That means a raid can last longer than the standard three, five or seven waves shown above. Raid composition, spawning rules and the exact mix of illagers vary between Java and Bedrock and can also change with game updates.
Typical progression through a raid
Early waves are generally built around pillagers and vindicators. Witches enter the mid-raid mix. Ravagers appear in later waves, while evokers and mounted Ravagers are associated with the final stages. Use this progression to decide when to stop repairing defenses and concentrate on high-priority targets: a late wave can combine a Ravager, an evoker and additional raiders in one push.
Prepare the village before starting
The best Ravager fight is one that begins with villagers and escape routes protected. Complete these checks before entering a village with Bad Omen.
- Secure villagers: Lock villagers inside houses or purpose-built cells so a charging Ravager cannot reach them. Close doors and remove unnecessary openings.
- Bring armor: Use your strongest available armor, because one Hard-difficulty hit can remove nine hearts from an unarmored player.
- Carry a shield: It can briefly stun a Ravager, giving you an opening to retreat or reposition. The roar can still knock you back and hurt you.
- Pack ranged weapons: A bow or crossbow lets you fight without standing in the Ravager’s reach. Bring enough arrows or bolts for several waves.
- Bring food: Keep your hunger full so natural regeneration remains available between attacks.
- Carry spare blocks: Blocks let you build a two-block firing slit, pillar, wall or emergency bridge during the raid.
- Protect terrain: Expect crops and leaves to be damaged as raiders pursue targets. Move villagers away from farms and valuable paths.
- Plan a fallback: Identify a roof, tower, trench or enclosed room you can reach without running through the village center.
How to defeat a Ravager step by step
1. Locate the raid and choose the safe side of the village
Ring the village bell when raiders are difficult to find. The bell helps you locate the attacking group, but do not stand in the open waiting for the Ravager to arrive. Move to a roof, wall or prepared firing position with a clear retreat path.

2. Separate the Ravager from other raiders
A Ravager is much easier to handle when pillagers, vindicators, witches and evokers are not attacking at the same time. Draw the beast toward a trench, wall or open edge while keeping villagers behind sealed defenses. Avoid chasing it into the village center, where its path can cross crops, houses and trapped villagers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Kill the rider before committing to the beast
If a Ravager is mounted, target the rider whenever you have a clear shot. An evoker can summon vexes, which create a second wave of attackers that can reach you around walls. A Java Edition vindicator rider adds heavy melee pressure. A pillager rider contributes ranged attacks. Once the rider is dead, the Ravager is still dangerous, but the combined attack is easier to control.
4. Use a bow from high ground or behind a two-block opening
Ranged combat is the safest general approach. Stand on a roof, raised platform or other position the Ravager cannot immediately reach. A two-block-high opening allows you to fire while limiting the beast’s access. Shoot, retreat between shots and keep a second route open in case another raider approaches from behind.
Do not assume a short pillar is permanent protection. Ravagers resist knockback and can force you into a bad position if you remain at the edge. Keep enough blocks to extend the platform or seal the opening while you fight.
5. Use the shield for a controlled opening
A shield can trigger a brief Ravager stun. Raise it as the beast closes, then use the pause to move behind a wall, climb to high ground or deliver a few controlled attacks. Do not hold the shield in place indefinitely: the Ravager’s roar can knock you backward and deal damage, potentially sending you off a ledge or into another raider.

6. Turn terrain into a trap
- Trenches: A trench or drop can limit the Ravager’s movement and give you a safer angle for arrows. Check that you can escape if other raiders enter the trench.
- Lava: Lava can damage or contain a Ravager when villagers, wooden buildings and crops are safely out of its flow. A badly placed source can burn the village or block your own retreat.
- Walls and firing slits: A solid barrier with a two-block opening keeps melee range under control while preserving line of sight.
- Iron golems: An iron golem can absorb pressure while you attack from a safer angle. It is support, not a guarantee; protect it from being isolated by the rest of the raid.
7. Finish with melee only from a protected position
Use a sword or axe after the Ravager is trapped, stunned or separated from the raid. Strike from behind a barrier or from a position where its charge cannot push you into danger. Open-ground melee is the least forgiving option because of the beast’s damage, knockback resistance and roar.
8. Recheck the area after the kill
Once the Ravager falls, look for the rider’s remains, evokers, witches and vexes before leaving your position. A dead Ravager does not end the wave. Keep villagers secured until every raid group is defeated.
Mounted Ravagers: the priority order
Mounted combinations require a different target order from an unmounted beast.
- Evoker rider: Kill it first whenever possible. Its vexes can fly around simple walls and force you into melee range.
- Vindicator rider: In Java Edition, remove this rider quickly because its melee attacks add substantial close-range pressure.
- Pillager rider: Eliminate the rider if crossbow fire prevents you from holding a safe position.
- Ravager: After the rider is gone, return to ranged attacks, a trench, lava or a controlled melee position.
If the rider is hidden by the Ravager’s body, change elevation or angle rather than charging forward. A clear line to the rider is worth more than a few rushed hits on the beast.
Java Edition vs. Bedrock Edition
Edition matters for both combat planning and raid-farm design. The confirmed rider distinction is that Java can generate vindicator riders, while Bedrock does not. Other wave, spawning and loot behavior should be checked against the exact edition and game version used by your world.

What does a Ravager drop?
The Ravager’s own drop
The listed direct drop from a Ravager is a saddle. The saddle is the reliable item to associate with killing the beast itself; it is not a broad Ravager loot table containing every raid reward.

The raid as a whole can provide rewards and enemy drops beyond the Ravager’s saddle. Associated raid loot includes:
- Emeralds
- Crossbows
- Totems of undying
- Ominous banners
- Iron axes
- Witch drops
These rewards come from the wider raid and its participating mobs, not from every Ravager kill. Java and Bedrock loot tables and drop behavior can differ, so treat edition and version as part of the drop information.

Raid-farm designs funnel raiders toward a controlled killing area, where the player or an automated mechanism can defeat them and collect drops. Ravagers make the design more demanding because they resist knockback, occupy more space than ordinary illagers and can damage nearby terrain.

Farm-planning checklist
- Choose a design explicitly labeled for Java or Bedrock.
- Check the tutorial’s Minecraft version, not just its publication date.
- Provide a route for Ravagers that does not jam against ordinary raiders.
- Keep villagers and the raid-triggering location protected from accidental attacks.
- Separate collection, player-access and villager areas so a Ravager cannot reach the player unexpectedly.
- Verify the expected loot for your edition; Java and Bedrock farms can produce different outcomes.
A farm that works in one edition may have different spawning rates, rider behavior or loot in the other. Label any design you build with its edition and version so later maintenance does not confuse the two rule sets.

Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The Ravager reaches the village center. | Villagers or crops were left exposed, giving the raid a direct path. | Seal villagers before the raid, lure the beast away from houses and use walls or a trench to redirect it. |
| You cannot keep the Ravager away with melee hits. | Ravagers resist knockback. | Switch to a bow, firing slit or elevated platform instead of relying on repeated sword knockback. |
| The shield seems to make the fight worse. | The roar can knock you back and deal damage even during a shield-based defense. | Use the shield for a brief stun, then retreat behind cover rather than standing in front of the beast. |
| Vexes appear while you are fighting the Ravager. | An evoker rider or nearby evoker was left alive. | Break line of sight if needed, then prioritize and kill the evoker before finishing the Ravager. |
| A lava trap damages the village. | The flow reached wooden buildings, crops or villagers. | Use lava only after protecting combustible structures and confirming that villagers are outside the flow path. |
| A raid-farm tutorial does not work as shown. | The design targets a different edition or version. | Use a farm documented for your exact Java or Bedrock version and compare its spawning and loot assumptions. |
Practical strategy by player experience
New players
Secure villagers, build a roof or two-block firing slit, carry a shield and bow, and avoid open-ground melee. Let an iron golem draw attention while you shoot from cover. If a rider appears, target it before the beast.
Prepared survival players
Use a planned trench, elevated platform or controlled lava channel. Keep spare blocks and a second retreat route, and ring the bell whenever the raid group is hard to locate. Divide the fight into isolated targets instead of engaging the whole wave at once.
Raid-farm builders
Start with edition- and version-specific mechanics, then test the Ravager path separately from ordinary raiders. Confirm that the killing chamber, collection system and player access all accommodate Ravager size and knockback behavior before running repeated raids.
