Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Netcat (usually the nc command) lets you test whether a Linux host can accept TCP connections, send and receive UDP datagrams, and listen on a temporary port. Use a bounded command such as nc -v -z -w 5 SERVER_IP PORT for a quick TCP socket check. For UDP, run a listener with nc -u -l 5000 and send a datagram from another host; a sender returning to the shell alone does not prove delivery.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
The exact switches depend on the installed implementation. Linux systems commonly ship OpenBSD nc, Ncat from the Nmap Project, BusyBox nc, or another variant. Check the local help and manual before copying listener syntax.

What netcat can—and cannot—prove
Netcat is a command-line utility that opens sockets, writes data, reads responses, and listens for incoming connections. It supports TCP, UDP, IPv4, IPv6, and, in some implementations, Unix-domain sockets. No special hardware is needed; the program simply runs on the client, server, or both.
A successful TCP test proves that packets reached the destination and that a process accepted a TCP socket on that address and port. It does not prove that the service speaks the protocol you expect, has healthy dependencies, accepts your credentials, or will complete a real transaction. After a socket check, use a protocol-aware request such as an HTTP request, a database client, or the service’s own health check.

UDP requires more care. It has no TCP-style handshake. A command can transmit a datagram and exit even when a firewall drops it, no process is listening, or the application receives it but sends no reply. Confirm the message at a listener, obtain a response from the application, or capture packets on both ends.
Identify the netcat implementation first
Option names and listener behavior are not completely portable. OpenBSD nc and Ncat both use TCP by default and select UDP with -u, but they differ in features, output, and some syntax. BusyBox builds may expose only a subset of options.
- Run
nc -hand read the displayed options. - Try
nc -Vwhere the implementation supports a version switch. - Read
man nc(or the package’s local documentation) before using a listener command in a script. - If the command is actually Ncat, invoke it explicitly as
ncatand consult its help output.
The examples below use the OpenBSD-style syntax documented on Ubuntu. Ncat equivalents are included where its behavior is particularly useful.
Option reference for the common tests
| Option | Purpose | Where it matters |
|---|---|---|
-v |
Verbose status output | Shows whether a connection succeeded or why it failed |
-w 5 |
Five-second connection/idle wait limit | Prevents a test from hanging indefinitely |
-z |
Zero-I/O mode | Checks whether a TCP socket accepts a connection without sending application data |
-l |
Listen for incoming traffic | Creates a temporary TCP or UDP test endpoint |
-u |
Use UDP instead of the default TCP | Required on both sender and listener for a UDP test |
-k |
Keep a Ncat listener open for additional connections | Useful for repeatable Ncat tests; availability varies by implementation |
Some builds add address-family switches, source-address binding, proxy modes, TLS, or connection limits. Do not assume those switches exist in a minimal package.
Test whether a TCP port is open
Make a bounded, verbose connection
From the client host, run:
nc -v -w 5 SERVER_IP PORT
Replace SERVER_IP with an IPv4 or IPv6 address (or a resolvable hostname) and PORT with the destination port. The -v flag prints the result; -w 5 limits the connection and idle wait to five seconds. On a service that accepts a connection and then waits for protocol data, the command may remain open until the timeout or until you press Ctrl-C. That behavior indicates socket acceptance, not application health.

Zero-I/O mode asks whether a listening daemon will accept the TCP connection and then closes it. It is appropriate for a quick reachability check and for checking a small, authorized set of ports. It does not test authentication, encryption, certificates, protocol negotiation, or a complete request/response exchange.
Check several ports in a range
OpenBSD-style nc accepts a range in the port position:
nc -vz -w 2 SERVER_IP 20-25
This performs a short zero-I/O check on each port. Treat the result as basic reachability reconnaissance for systems you own or administer, not as a vulnerability assessment or service fingerprint.

nc -l 5000
The process waits for one incoming TCP connection on port 5000. Depending on the implementation, the listener may bind to all local interfaces or to a default address. If it binds only to loopback, remote clients cannot reach it. Use the implementation’s help text for an explicit bind-address option when you need to constrain or broaden the listening interface.
Connect and send a known string
From a different host, send one line:
printf 'hello over tcpn' | nc -v -w 5 SERVER_IP 5000
The text should appear in the listener’s terminal. This test exercises the path in both directions: the client reaches the listening socket and the listener receives application bytes. It still does not represent the target service’s real protocol framing or authentication.
Keep an Ncat listener available for repeated tests
Ncat supports a persistent listener:
ncat -l -k 5000
The -k (or --keep-open) option tells Ncat to accept multiple connections instead of exiting after the first. OpenBSD nc may not provide the same switch, so do not substitute it blindly. Stop a temporary listener with Ctrl-C when testing is complete.
Test UDP connectivity correctly
Listen for datagrams
On the receiving host, start a UDP listener:
nc -u -l 5000
OpenBSD nc documents that a UDP listener socket can receive datagrams from multiple hosts. Keep this terminal visible so you can verify whether the payload arrives.
Send a datagram
From the client host, transmit a known message:
printf 'hello over udpn' | nc -u -v -w 5 SERVER_IP 5000
If the listener prints the line, the datagram reached that socket. If the sender exits quietly, you have only shown that the local program handed data to the network stack. UDP provides no acknowledgement at the transport layer, so a silent sender cannot distinguish successful delivery from filtering, an unbound destination port, a stopped service, or an application that deliberately sends no reply.

Use a response or packet capture for stronger evidence
For a service that should answer, make the listener or test application return a recognizable response and verify it at the client. When no response is defined, capture traffic on the client and server and compare timestamps, source and destination addresses, and ports. A packet visible leaving the client but absent on the server points to routing or filtering between them; a packet visible at the server but not consumed by the application points to binding, local firewall, or service behavior.
Interpret the result and exit status
| Observed result | What it usually means | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Verbose TCP success | The host and port accepted a TCP socket | Send a protocol-valid request to test the application |
| Connection refused | The host was reachable, but no process accepted that TCP port, or an active device rejected it | Verify the service is running and bound to the intended address |
| Timeout | Filtering, routing failure, a stopped service, or an address/interface mismatch is possible | Check routes, firewalls, security groups, and the destination address |
| UDP sender exits with no message | The local send completed; delivery is unconfirmed | Watch the listener, require an application response, or capture packets |
Ncat documents exit status 0 for a successful connection, 1 for a network error such as “Connection refused” or “Connection reset,” and 2 for other errors such as an invalid option or missing file. OpenBSD nc and other implementations can differ, so confirm the status semantics in the local manual before relying on them in automation.
Capture the status immediately if you are scripting:
nc -vz -w 5 SERVER_IP 443
status=$?
printf 'netcat exit status: %sn' "$status"
Do not classify every nonzero result as “the port is closed”; an invalid switch, name-resolution failure, or local permission problem can also produce failure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A systematic troubleshooting workflow
1. Confirm the destination address
Check DNS resolution and make sure you are testing the intended IPv4 or IPv6 address. A service can be reachable on one address family and absent on the other. If necessary, use the address explicitly and select the family with an option supported by your implementation.
Best Value
2. Verify a local listening socket
On the destination server, run:
ss -lntup
Look for the expected port, protocol, process, and bind address. A service listening on 127.0.0.1 is local-only; a service bound to a specific private address may not accept connections sent to another interface.
3. Inspect host and cloud filtering
Review the Linux firewall rules on both ends and any cloud security-group or network ACL policy between them. Permit the correct protocol and destination port, and remember that a rule allowing TCP does not automatically allow UDP on the same number.
4. Check routing and interface selection
Confirm that the client has a route to the server’s address and that the server’s return route points back to the client. Multi-homed hosts, containers, and policy routing can make a service appear healthy locally while unreachable from a particular network.
5. Compare packet captures
When command output is ambiguous, capture on the client and server. Compare whether SYN packets and replies appear for TCP, or whether UDP datagrams arrive and leave. This separates a client-side issue from a path filter and an application-binding issue.
6. Repeat with a protocol-aware client
Once netcat proves basic transport reachability, use the real protocol’s client. For HTTP, send an HTTP request and inspect the status line; for TLS, use a TLS-capable diagnostic that validates the required certificate and protocol; for a database, use its authentication and query handshake. A bare netcat connection cannot establish those properties.
OpenBSD nc, Ncat, and other variants
| Capability | OpenBSD nc |
Ncat | Why the difference matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default protocol | TCP | TCP | Add -u for UDP |
| Listen mode | -l, with syntax governed by the local build |
ncat -l PORT |
Copying options between builds can fail |
| UDP listener | nc -u -l PORT |
ncat -u -l PORT |
Verify behavior and address binding locally |
| Zero-I/O check | -z |
-z |
Checks socket acceptance, not service semantics |
| Timeout | -w SECONDS |
-w SECONDS in common builds |
Confirm whether the option covers connect, idle, or both |
| Keep listener open | Not uniform across builds | -k or --keep-open |
Ncat is convenient for repeated connections |
| Advanced modes | Core socket and transport testing | TLS, proxying, brokering, and explicit connection limits | Use the exact mode and certificate requirements of the target |
| Exit statuses | Build-dependent | 0 success, 1 network error, 2 other error as documented | Read the local manual before automation |
BusyBox and vendor packages can omit flags or alter output. The safest portable practice is to start every troubleshooting session with nc -h and a manual-page check, then adapt the smallest command that your installed binary supports.

- Test only hosts and ports for which you have explicit authorization. Even a short port-range check can violate an organization’s monitoring or acceptable-use policy.
- Do not send passwords, tokens, personal data, or production payloads through a plain netcat session. Basic TCP and UDP modes are unencrypted.
- Ncat offers TLS-related options, but a TLS-enabled test must match the target’s certificate, protocol version, SNI, and client-authentication requirements. A plain
ncconnection cannot validate those settings. - Use a temporary high port for ad hoc listeners, document the change, and remove firewall exceptions and test processes afterward.
- Limit listeners to the intended interface where possible. A test bound to all interfaces can unintentionally expose a service to other networks.
- Keep test payloads short and recognizable. Netcat does not provide application framing, retries, congestion policy, or authentication on its own.
Practical test plans
Fast TCP reachability check
- Identify the implementation with
nc -h. - Run
nc -v -z -w 5 SERVER_IP PORT. - Record the output and exit status.
- If successful, perform a protocol-aware health check.
Full TCP path check
- Start
nc -l 5000on the receiving host. - Confirm with
ss -lntupthat the listener is bound to the expected interface. - Send
printf 'hello over tcpn' | nc -v -w 5 SERVER_IP 5000from another host. - Verify the exact line appears at the listener, then stop the temporary process.
UDP delivery check
- Start
nc -u -l 5000on the receiver. - Check that UDP/5000 is permitted through host and network firewalls.
- Send
printf 'hello over udpn' | nc -u -v -w 5 SERVER_IP 5000. - Require visible listener output, an application response, or packet-capture evidence before declaring UDP working.
Used this way, netcat gives you a fast answer about the transport path while keeping the boundary clear: socket acceptance is not the same as a healthy, secure, correctly configured application.
