In Minecraft 1.21 and later, drinking an Ominous Bottle gives you Bad Omen, but walking into a village no longer starts a raid immediately. Bad Omen becomes Raid Omen when you enter a qualifying village; after a 30-second countdown, the raid begins unless you drink milk to remove the effect.

What changed about raids in Minecraft 1.21
The activation sequence changed in the 1.21 update. An Ominous Bottle is now the intended way to obtain Bad Omen. Entering a village with Bad Omen converts the effect into Raid Omen instead of launching the raid at once.
Raid Omen lasts for 30 seconds. That timer is a preparation window: you can move villagers to safety, take a position, equip your best gear, or cancel the event. Drinking milk clears the effect before the countdown expires. If you do not clear it, the raid starts at the location where you gained Raid Omen and the raid boss bar appears.

This distinction matters when you are carrying Bad Omen through several settlements. You can approach the village, see the Raid Omen timer, and still decide not to fight. Milk is the cancellation method; leaving the area is not a dependable substitute once the countdown has begun.
What Minecraft recognizes as a village
A raid does not require a large settlement, many houses, or a naturally generated village. The important requirement is a recognized village with both of these elements:
- At least one villager.
- A claimed bed or another recognized village point of interest.
A single villager and a claimed bed can therefore be enough for the game to recognize the location. The bed or point of interest must actually be claimed by a villager; simply placing an unclaimed bed near a villager may not create the village state you expect.
For a reliable setup, place a bed where a villager can claim it, verify that the villager is present, and keep the area clear enough for you to move. A compact settlement is often easier to defend than a sprawling natural village because there are fewer corners, caves, and distant paths in which raiders can hide.

How to start a raid after 1.21
- Get an Ominous Bottle. This is the current item used to obtain Bad Omen. Keep it in your inventory until you are ready; the raid activation itself begins only when you drink it and then enter a qualifying village.
- Prepare away from the village. Drink the bottle outside the settlement if you want to use the full 30-second window inside it for final positioning. This also prevents an accidental conversion while you are still organizing villagers or storage.
- Confirm the village. Make sure at least one villager is alive and that a bed or another recognized point of interest is claimed. If either part is missing, the location may not qualify.
- Enter the village area. When you cross into the recognized village while Bad Omen is active, the effect changes to Raid Omen.
- Use the countdown. Raid Omen displays a 30-second timer. Equip your combat gear, close gates or openings, move villagers behind walls, and take the position from which you will fight. If you decide not to proceed, drink milk before the timer ends.
- Let Raid Omen expire. When the countdown reaches zero, the raid starts at the location where you received Raid Omen. The raid boss bar appears and the first wave is generated.
If you want to trigger several raids in separate places, finish or cancel the current event before carrying another Ominous Bottle into a different village. Treat every bottle as a deliberate event trigger rather than as a passive status effect.
What to bring before the countdown ends
The raid can become dangerous quickly when multiple illagers approach from different directions. Use the 30-second window to remove avoidable risks instead of trying to improvise after the first wave appears.
Weapons and protection
- Ranged weapon: A bow or crossbow lets you thin groups of pillagers before they reach your position. Ranged attacks are especially useful when several enemies are clustered in open ground.
- Melee weapon: Carry a dependable close-range weapon for vindicators, ravagers, or any raider that reaches your wall.
- Armor: Wear your strongest practical armor. The exact material matters less than entering with a complete, serviceable set rather than relying on an exposed position and quick escapes.
- Shield: A shield gives you a way to hold a doorway or survive an approach while you switch between ranged and melee attacks.
- Food: Bring enough food to recover between engagements. Running out during a later wave is an avoidable failure.
Building and movement supplies
- Blocks: Use spare blocks to close gaps, raise a short barrier, or create a fallback position.
- Water bucket: Water can help control movement and create space when enemies reach a narrow approach. Use it only where it will not trap you or obstruct your own escape.
- Lighting and clearing tools: Remove nearby obstructions and illuminate or inspect terrain where a raider could be hidden. Caves, uneven ground, and structures can make a wave appear to vanish when it has merely moved out of sight.
Protect the village first
Close or wall off villagers before the raid begins. Keep your own fighting position outside the enclosure so you can attack approaching raiders without exposing villagers. A compact defended area also makes the final search easier because you know which routes and open spaces need inspection.
Raid waves and enemy types
The number of waves depends on difficulty, with edition-specific behavior layered on top. The standard counts are:
| Difficulty | Standard waves | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | 3 | Base difficulty count. |
| Normal | 5 | Base difficulty count; evokers, vexes, and witches can appear. |
| Hard | 7 | Base difficulty count; the broadest dangerous composition. |
On Java Edition, omen levels above I can add a further wave and improve the chance that raiders have enchanted equipment. Bedrock Edition ties the wave count to difficulty instead of using Java’s additional-wave behavior. The exact group composition also differs between Java and Bedrock, including how mounted ravagers are used.
Pillagers
Pillagers are the main reason to keep a ranged weapon ready. Attack them from cover or from a protected elevation while they are grouped, then reposition before several enemies close at once. Fighting an entire group in the open gives their numbers more value and makes it harder to protect villagers.

Vindicators
Vindicators are dangerous at close range. Do not let several reach you simultaneously. Hold a doorway, wall corner, or other narrow approach, use ranged attacks while they are distant, and fall back when your position is about to be surrounded.
Ravagers
Ravagers are large mounted or assault enemies that can overwhelm an unprepared player and disrupt a village defense. Focus on them when they enter your engagement area, keep an escape route behind you, and avoid being pinned against a wall or trapped among buildings. Mounted-ravager behavior and group composition vary between Java and Bedrock.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Evokers, vexes, and witches
Evokers, vexes, and witches are associated with Normal and Hard raids. Their presence is one reason not to assume that a successful Easy strategy will work unchanged on a higher difficulty. Keep moving between attacks, maintain a clear retreat path, and search for the source of unusual attacks instead of standing in one exposed spot.
A practical combat plan for every wave
1. Start from a known defensive position
Choose one position before the first wave: a walled courtyard, a raised platform with a safe route down, or a narrow approach beside the village perimeter. You should be able to see the main approaches while still reaching cover quickly. Do not fight from the middle of the settlement if that exposes villagers behind you.
2. Thin distant groups first
Use your bow or crossbow against grouped pillagers while they are still at range. This reduces the number of projectiles and bodies you must manage when melee enemies arrive. Fire from behind a wall or shield whenever possible, then step back rather than chasing a retreating group into terrain you have not checked.
3. Prevent a surround
When multiple illagers close in, fall back to your prepared position. A retreat is safer than trading hits in the open, especially when vindicators and a ravager approach together. Keep blocks ready to seal a side opening or create a temporary divider.

4. Prioritize the threats that can break your position
Deal with ravagers and dangerous melee enemies before returning to distant pillagers. If an evoker, vexes, or a witch is active on Normal or Hard, do not ignore the source while concentrating only on the easiest visible target. Your priority is to keep control of the space around the village enclosure.
5. Count the wave as unfinished until the bar clears
Do not assume a wave is over because the visible group has been defeated. If the raid bar remains, a raider is still alive somewhere. Check behind houses, around the village perimeter, on uneven ground, and in nearby caves or other obstructed terrain. Search methodically from the defended center outward rather than wandering randomly and exposing the villagers.
6. Reset before the next wave
After the enemies in sight are gone, eat, replace damaged equipment if possible, close any opening that was used by the previous group, and return villagers to a secure enclosure. The pause between waves is the time to restore your position; spending it outside the village perimeter can turn a manageable next wave into a surprise attack.

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition differences
The shared workflow is the same in both editions: obtain Bad Omen from an Ominous Bottle, enter a recognized village, wait through Raid Omen, fight the waves, and kill every raider. The differences become important when you predict wave count, enemy composition, or rewards.
| Comparison point | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Wave count | Easy 3, Normal 5, Hard 7 as the standard counts. Omen levels above I can add another wave. | Easy 3, Normal 5, Hard 7, with wave count tied to difficulty rather than Java’s additional-wave rule. |
| Omen-level effect | Higher omen levels above I can add a wave and improve the chance of enchanted raider equipment. | Does not use the same additional-wave behavior described for Java. |
| Enemy composition | Pillagers, vindicators, ravagers, and—on Normal and Hard—evokers, vexes, and witches, with Java-specific grouping differences. | The same broad enemy categories can occur, but group composition differs from Java. |
| Mounted ravagers | Mounted-ravager combinations follow Java’s raid composition rules. | Mounted-ravager behavior and composition differ from Java. |
| Victory presentation | A player who killed at least one raid mob receives Hero of the Village; Java also records the related advancement and grants 100 experience. | Players who killed at least one raid mob receive Hero of the Village, while the Java-specific advancement and its 100-experience reward do not present identically. |
If you switch editions, do not use an assumed wave total or enemy lineup to plan your entire defense. Use the difficulty count as the baseline, then account for the edition’s composition and omen rules.
How a raid ends and what you receive
The raid ends in victory only after every raider has been killed. The boss bar disappearing is the practical confirmation that no enemy remains. If the bar is still present, continue searching instead of waiting for the game to declare a win.
Best Value

Any player who killed at least one raid mob receives the Hero of the Village effect after victory. On Java Edition, the related advancement is also recorded and grants 100 experience. Players who stayed nearby but did not kill a raid mob should not assume they qualify for the same player-specific reward condition.
Troubleshooting common raid problems
The raid started before I was ready
In 1.21+, entering the village changes Bad Omen to Raid Omen first, so there should be a 30-second warning. Drink milk during that period if you need to cancel, then prepare and use another Ominous Bottle only when you are ready to fight.
The raid will not start
Check the two village requirements: at least one living villager and a claimed bed or another recognized point of interest. An unclaimed bed, a villager that has died, or a location the game does not recognize as a village can prevent the conversion or the subsequent raid.
The boss bar remains but I cannot see a raider
Search the perimeter in a deliberate pattern. Inspect behind houses, below ledges, in caves, around walls, and on any uneven ground connected to the village. Obstructed terrain is a frequent reason the last raider is not visible from the central defense position.
Villagers are being exposed
Stop pursuing enemies through the settlement and return to the enclosure. Add blocks to open walls, close doors or gaps, and use a single controlled approach for combat. A smaller fight area is easier to watch than a village with several unguarded entrances.

I do not want to fight after receiving Raid Omen
Drink milk before the 30-second Raid Omen countdown expires. This is the documented way to clear the effect and prevent the raid from beginning at that location.
Raid preparation checklist
- Ominous Bottle available and intentionally used.
- At least one villager alive in the target settlement.
- A claimed bed or another recognized village point of interest.
- Strong practical armor equipped.
- Bow or crossbow, melee weapon, shield, and sufficient food.
- Spare blocks for barriers and emergency repairs.
- Water bucket if it helps control movement in your terrain.
- Villagers enclosed before Raid Omen expires.
- Nearby caves, deep gaps, and obstructed routes checked.
- Fallback position selected with a clear escape route.
- Milk carried if you want the option to cancel during the countdown.
The safest rhythm is simple: trigger Bad Omen away from the settlement, use the Raid Omen timer to secure the village, fight from cover, retreat before you are surrounded, and search the entire perimeter whenever the bar says the raid is not finished.
