Craft one with five iron ingots, one regular furnace and three smooth stone. For recipes it accepts, it processes one item in 100 game ticks (5 seconds), exactly twice as fast as a regular furnace’s 200 ticks (10 seconds). It does not reduce fuel used per item, and it cannot replace a regular furnace for food, sand, stone and other non-metal recipes.

What a blast furnace does
The blast furnace is a furnace variant dedicated to metal-related inputs. Its supported recipes include ores, raw metals, and metal equipment such as tools, weapons and armor. When a recipe is accepted, the block turns that input into its smelted result while showing progress in the familiar furnace interface.

The specialization matters because the blast furnace trades versatility for throughput. A regular furnace handles a broad range of recipes, including food and many building materials. A blast furnace handles a narrower metal workload but finishes each supported item in half the time. If your project produces large batches of ore or worn-out metal gear, that shorter cycle reduces the time you spend waiting for results.

| Ingredient | Quantity | Grid position |
|---|---|---|
| Iron ingot | 5 | All three top-row slots, plus the left and right slots of the middle row |
| Regular furnace | 1 | Center slot |
| Smooth stone | 3 | All three bottom-row slots |
The finished pattern looks like this:
| Iron ingot | Iron ingot | Iron ingot |
| Iron ingot | Furnace | Iron ingot |
| Smooth stone | Smooth stone | Smooth stone |
Place the blast furnace in your inventory when the result appears. The recipe specifically requires smooth stone, not ordinary stone and not cobblestone. Substituting either of those blocks will not produce the blast furnace.
Getting the ingredients
- Iron ingots: Smelt iron ore or raw iron in a regular furnace, or obtain ingots through other in-game sources.
- Regular furnace: Craft the furnace first; it is the center ingredient in the blast-furnace pattern.
- Smooth stone: Use a furnace to process stone into smooth stone, then place three smooth-stone blocks across the bottom row. Ordinary stone and cobblestone are different items for this recipe.
Because the recipe consumes a regular furnace, craft or retain at least one additional furnace if you still need a general-purpose smelter. The blast furnace cannot take over every task that the original furnace performs.
What can a blast furnace smelt?
Use the blast furnace for recipes in these categories:
- Ores: Metal ores that have a supported furnace recipe can be processed in the blast furnace.
- Raw metals: Raw-metal inputs, such as raw ore drops intended for ingots, are part of its specialization.
- Metal equipment: Metal tools, weapons, armor and related metal equipment can be smelted when the game provides a corresponding furnace recipe.
A concrete late-game example is ancient debris. Smelting ancient debris in either a regular furnace or a blast furnace produces netherite scrap. The blast furnace is therefore useful when you are processing a batch of ancient debris and want the shorter per-item cycle.
What it rejects
The block does not accept every item that a regular furnace can process. Food recipes and non-metal furnace recipes are outside its specialization. It will not cook food, smelt sand, or perform ordinary stone and other non-metal recipes. When an input is rejected, move it to a regular furnace rather than trying different fuel; changing fuel does not expand the blast furnace’s recipe list.

A practical setup often uses both blocks: a blast furnace for incoming metal and a regular furnace for food, sand, stone and miscellaneous materials. This avoids repeatedly breaking or rearranging one station whenever your task changes.
How fast is a blast furnace?
For an eligible recipe, a blast furnace takes 100 game ticks, which is 5 seconds, per item. A regular furnace takes 200 game ticks, or 10 seconds, for its normal cycle. The blast furnace therefore doubles the processing rate for recipes it supports.
| Comparison | Blast furnace | Regular furnace |
|---|---|---|
| Cycle for a supported item | 100 game ticks (5 seconds) | 200 game ticks (10 seconds) |
| Relative speed | Twice as fast for eligible recipes | Baseline rate |
| Fuel consumed per item | Unchanged from a regular furnace | Baseline fuel use |
| Metal ores, raw metals and metal equipment | Supported categories | Supported where a furnace recipe exists |
| Food | Not supported | Supported by the regular furnace |
| Sand, stone and other non-metal recipes | Not supported | Supported where a furnace recipe exists |
“Twice as fast” describes the processing cycle, not an increase in output. One eligible input still produces the same recipe result; it simply reaches that result after 5 seconds instead of 10.
Batch-time examples
For a uninterrupted batch of eligible items, multiply the item count by the cycle time. Ten metal items take 50 seconds in a blast furnace, compared with 100 seconds in a regular furnace. A full stack of 64 eligible items takes 320 seconds (5 minutes 20 seconds) in a blast furnace, compared with 640 seconds (10 minutes 40 seconds) in a regular furnace. These figures describe processing time only; loading, unloading and fuel insertion add player or system overhead.
Multiple blast furnaces can process separate items at the same time, so a large mining operation can increase throughput by adding stations. The speed advantage applies only to recipes the blast furnace accepts; a line of blast furnaces will not help with a stack of food or sand.

Does a blast furnace use less fuel?
No. The blast furnace halves the time per supported item, but fuel consumption per item remains unchanged. You finish the batch sooner without receiving a fuel discount for each item.
This distinction affects how you plan a smelting room:
- Choose a blast furnace when your priority is shorter waiting time or higher metal throughput.
- Do not build one expecting to stretch a limited fuel supply further on a per-item basis.
- Keep fuel logistics sized for the same per-item consumption you would expect from a regular furnace.
The economic benefit, if any, comes from faster turnaround and less idle time, not from burning a smaller amount of fuel for each ingot or scrap result.
Where to place a blast furnace
Place the block close to the point where metal inputs accumulate. A station near a mine reduces the distance between ore and smelting. The same logic applies beside an iron or gold farm, where raw metal can arrive in volume, and near a trading setup that generates or consumes metal equipment.

Mining setup
Put the blast furnace next to storage for ores and raw metals, with fuel immediately accessible. A nearby regular furnace handles food or non-metal blocks without forcing you to carry those inputs elsewhere.

Farm output
For an iron or gold farm, dedicate blast-furnace capacity to the metal stream and use separate storage for items that the block rejects. This keeps non-metal materials from clogging the metal-processing workflow.
Trading and equipment cleanup
Metal tools, weapons and armor that have a supported smelting recipe can be routed to the blast furnace. It is useful when many such items arrive together, but check that each item is actually a metal-equipment recipe before sending it through; unsupported equipment will not process.
Blast furnace versus regular furnace: choosing the right block
The choice is straightforward when you sort the job by input type.
- Identify the input. If it is an ore, raw metal or supported metal equipment, a blast furnace is eligible.
- Check whether the recipe is non-metal. Food, sand, ordinary stone and other general furnace recipes require a regular furnace.
- Prioritize time or flexibility. Use the blast furnace for a 5-second metal cycle; use the regular furnace when you need broader recipe coverage.
- Plan fuel separately. Both blocks consume the same fuel amount per item for comparable furnace processing, so faster completion does not mean lower fuel demand.
Many bases benefit from keeping both blocks permanently available. The blast furnace is a specialist, not a universal upgrade: it adds speed for one category while giving up the regular furnace’s general-purpose recipes.
Common mistakes and fixes
Using the wrong stone in the recipe
Symptom: The crafting table does not show a blast furnace. Fix: Replace ordinary stone or cobblestone with smooth stone in all three bottom slots. The recipe needs three smooth-stone blocks.
Best Value
Expecting food to cook
Symptom: Food cannot be placed into the blast furnace for cooking. Fix: Transfer the food to a regular furnace. Food is outside the blast furnace’s accepted recipe categories.
Trying to smelt sand or general blocks
Symptom: A non-metal input will not begin processing. Fix: Use a regular furnace, which remains necessary for sand, stone and other non-metal recipes.
Assuming fuel lasts longer
Symptom: A fuel supply runs out after roughly the same number of items as before. Fix: This is expected. The blast furnace shortens each eligible cycle to 100 ticks but does not reduce fuel consumed per item.
Expecting unsupported equipment to process
Symptom: A tool, weapon or armor item does not smelt. Fix: Only metal equipment with a corresponding furnace recipe is accepted; move unsupported items to the appropriate station or storage.
Bedrock technical note: recipe tags
In Bedrock add-on data, furnace recipe definitions can use station tags that include blast_furnace. This is a data-schema mechanism for defining which station may process a recipe; it is not a separate crafting recipe for players and does not make every furnace recipe valid in a blast furnace. Players using add-ons should follow the recipe’s station tag and the item categories supported by that definition.

- Recipe cost: five iron ingots, one regular furnace and three smooth stone.
- Crafting layout: iron across the top, iron on both sides of the middle row, the furnace in the center, and smooth stone across the bottom.
- Metal cycle: 100 game ticks, or 5 seconds, per eligible item.
- Regular-furnace cycle: 200 game ticks, or 10 seconds, per item.
- Fuel: unchanged per item; the time saving is not a fuel saving.
- Best role: high-volume ore, raw-metal and metal-equipment processing.
- Required companion: a regular furnace for food, sand, stone and other non-metal recipes.
Bottom line
Craft the blast furnace when metal throughput matters: its exact recipe is five iron ingots, one furnace and three smooth stone, and it processes supported metal items in 5 seconds instead of 10. Keep a regular furnace alongside it, because the blast furnace does not cook food, smelt sand or handle general non-metal recipes, and it does not reduce fuel consumed per item.
