The Switch 2 version is the one to choose if you want Minecraft’s confirmed native upgrade, Vibrant Visuals enabled by default, and the refreshed Super Mario Mash-Up pack. It is scheduled for October 27, 2026, so this is a pre-release comparison—not a verdict based on hands-on testing. If you already own the digital Switch version, you may qualify for a limited-time upgrade offer. Existing Switch worlds can carry over, but split-screen disables Vibrant Visuals.
What changes in the Switch 2 version?
A native release built for Switch 2
Mojang announced a native Minecraft version optimized for Nintendo Switch 2, scheduled for October 27, 2026. Mojang says it is designed to take advantage of the console’s more powerful hardware, but has not published a comparative performance figure. Mojang’s announcement confirms the release and its stated intent.

Vibrant Visuals is the headline visual change
Vibrant Visuals is enabled by default in the native Switch 2 version. Mojang describes directional lighting and volumetric fog; Nintendo highlights enhanced lighting, shadows, and water reflections. These are visual-feature descriptions, not guarantees of a particular frame rate or resolution.
There are exceptions: Nintendo says Vibrant Visuals is unavailable in split-screen and in certain Marketplace worlds or content. If you play locally with multiple players or use Marketplace content, do not assume the feature will be active in every session. Nintendo’s Switch 2 listing details the feature and its caveats.

The Super Mario Mash-Up pack is updated
The native release includes the Super Mario Mash-Up pack, updated for Vibrant Visuals. Nintendo lists a themed world, 15 music tracks, and 40 player skins. The pack is exclusive to Nintendo versions of Minecraft. The included content is a confirmed feature; it does not mean Vibrant Visuals works in every mode or world.
What stays familiar, and can you bring your worlds?
Nintendo says Switch worlds can be carried over to Switch 2 so you can continue where you left off. Its listing does not spell out every transfer condition or how every Marketplace-content case works, so check the in-game or console transfer instructions when moving your own worlds.

The existing Switch version remains playable on Switch 2 when compatible. Nintendo’s general compatibility guidance says the console supports compatible Switch physical and digital games, while warning that some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. How the Switch-to-Switch 2 upgrade works
Mojang’s preorder information says owners of the digital Nintendo Switch version can obtain the digital Switch 2 Standard Edition for free in most territories through the end of January 2027. Japan’s stated price is 100 JPY, and Taiwan’s is 30 NTD. Deluxe and Ultimate Collection upgrades are discounted, but the offer does not set one universal price. The offer is limited-time and available through Nintendo eShop; check the terms shown for your territory before buying.

Mojang also confirms a physical Switch 2 retail edition. The preorder announcement does not provide a universal physical price, so compare local retailer pricing when it is available. Nintendo’s listing gives an estimated 1.2 GB file size and the October 27, 2026 release date; both listing details may change before launch.

For the current offer and edition details, use Mojang’s preorder announcement. Its terms are more specific to Minecraft than Nintendo’s general policy on free updates and paid Switch 2 upgrades.

Official materials reviewed for this pre-release comparison do not specify a Switch 2 frame-rate target, resolution, draw distance, or loading-time improvement over the Switch version. “Optimized for Switch 2” establishes that Mojang made a native version for the hardware; it does not quantify how fast or sharp it will be. Since the release is still in the future as of October 13, 2026, a numerical performance comparison would be premature.
