SonicOS documentation describes two policy workflows. Policy Mode combines Layer 3 through Layer 7 policy enforcement in a unified workflow. Classic Mode follows an earlier approach in which policies and actions are configured for individual security services. These descriptions do not establish that one mode is inherently more secure or easier to operate; the practical difference is how administrators organize and manage policy.

Check mode availability for the exact appliance
The SonicOS 7.0.1 guide lists TZ, NSa and several NSsp families as Classic-only, NSsp 15700 as Policy-only, and NSv as supporting either mode. This is specific to that guide and release, so verify the exact appliance and software version rather than assuming the same options apply across SonicWall products. The guide also warns that changing an NSv between modes can remove some extra-interface configuration information.
What do the management ecosystems offer?
Fortinet: deployment breadth and centralized management
Fortinet identifies FortiOS as the operating system for FortiGate NGFWs and documents support for physical appliances, hypervisors and cloud computing platforms. That range can matter when an organization needs firewall deployments in more than one environment. Fortinet also describes FortiManager as a centralized console for on-premises, cloud-based and cloud-delivered security solutions in its FortiOS 8.0 brief. Evaluate the selected products, licensing and operational requirements rather than treating a vendor description as an independent measure of integration or ease of management.

Fortinet lists IPS, advanced malware protection, web security, inline malware prevention and DLP among its security-service capabilities, and describes FortiOS roles in SD-WAN and ZTNA. Those descriptions indicate available categories, not equivalent coverage, licensing or independently measured efficacy against the other vendors.
Palo Alto Networks: delegated access and Panorama
Palo Alto Networks documents configurable role-based administrator access alongside web, CLI and XML API management. Panorama provides web-based centralized management, reporting and log collection for multiple firewalls. These capabilities may be relevant when administrators need delegated privileges or a shared view of a firewall fleet. The vendor’s guidance cautions against enabling management access from the internet or other untrusted zones; management-plane access should be restricted to trusted paths.

SonicWall: web management with API and CLI
SonicOS documents a web interface for configuring and monitoring firewall features, policies, security services, connected devices, threats, health, traffic and events, as well as API and CLI access. The available policy mode varies by appliance family, so administrators should confirm the workflow they will actually operate before planning migrations, training or reusable policy standards.
How to make a fair shortlist
Compare the specific firewall models, software versions and subscriptions you would deploy. A feature list alone cannot show whether a configuration will meet your requirements or perform adequately with inspection enabled.

- Deployment: List the physical, virtual, cloud, branch and data-center environments you need to support. Confirm that each proposed model and software release covers them.
- Policy operations: Map how administrators will create, review, reuse and migrate rules. For SonicWall, include the exact appliance family and supported SonicOS mode in that evaluation.
- Fleet administration: Identify whether you need shared policy, centralized reporting, log collection or management across multiple firewalls. Confirm which management products and licenses are required.
- Automation and delegation: Match documented APIs, CLI options and role-based privileges to your existing scripts, identity controls and administrator responsibilities. Do not assume similarly named interfaces expose identical functions.
- Security services: Compare the controls included or licensed for the precise products under consideration, then assess the configuration you will actually run. The vendor descriptions cited here do not establish equivalent service coverage or comparative threat efficacy.
- Operations and procurement: Account for staff skills, logging and incident workflows, migration effort, support requirements, product lifecycle and total cost. The cited material does not establish equivalent prices, licensing or support quality.
- Performance validation: Ask for results relevant to your traffic and inspection settings, or conduct an appropriate evaluation. Do not infer throughput from a product-family feature list.
Can the available evidence identify the most secure firewall?
No. The documentation describes product features and administration models, but it does not provide a controlled comparison using equivalent hardware, licenses, rulesets and traffic. A defensible security decision requires evaluating the specific models, enabled subscriptions, configurations and operating practices under consideration.
