Minecraft Name Tags: How to Get, Craft and Use Them (Java and Bedrock)

Minecraft name tags became craftable in the Tiny Takeover update. This guide covers the one-paper, one-metal-nugget recipe, chest loot and fishing routes, anvil renaming, mob application and edition-specific pitfalls.

In current Minecraft: Java Edition and Minecraft: Bedrock Edition releases that include the Tiny Takeover drop, name tags are craftable. You can also obtain them from generated-structure chest loot or fishing. To name a mob, rename the tag in an anvil first, then use the renamed tag on the mob.

This is a significant change from older Minecraft guides, which correctly said name tags could not be crafted at the time they were written. The Tiny Takeover release arrived on March 24, 2026, so your edition and game version determine which instructions apply.

What changed with Minecraft name tags

Mojang’s Tiny Takeover update made name tags a standard crafting item in both major editions. The Java 26.1 release notes specify a recipe of one paper and one metal nugget, while the Bedrock 26.10 changelog also records the March 24, 2026 release and craftable name tags. Mojang describes the change this way: “Name tags are now craftable using paper and any metal nugget.”

That means the old answer—“you cannot craft a name tag”—is no longer correct for versions containing Tiny Takeover. It can still be accurate for an older installation, an older guide’s target version, or a world that has not been updated. Check the version shown by your launcher or title screen before troubleshooting the recipe.

The current name-tag recipe

Use the following two ingredients in the crafting interface:

Ingredient Quantity Qualification
Paper 1 Required
Metal nugget 1 Any metal nugget accepted by the current name-tag recipe

The documented recipe requires one of each item. The available material is described as “any metal nugget”; use a nugget that your current edition and version recognize as valid for the recipe. The cited release notes do not specify a particular metal by name, so do not assume that an older guide’s ingredient list is still the complete rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once both ingredients are available, place them in the crafting interface and take the resulting name tag. The evidence for the recipe establishes the ingredients and quantities, but not a required slot arrangement, so follow the recipe that appears in your version’s crafting interface if the grid does not accept your first placement.

Ways to obtain a name tag

Crafting is now the predictable route when the recipe is available. Name tags also remain available through exploration and fishing. These methods are useful when you have not gathered the crafting materials or are playing a version without the Tiny Takeover recipe.

Route Certainty Resource cost Time pattern Best use
Crafting Deterministic after the recipe is available One paper and one accepted metal nugget per tag Immediate once materials are on hand Planned naming projects and repeatable supply
Generated-structure chest loot Chance-based; depends on loot generation Exploration, travel and the risk of searching structures Varies with the structures you find and search Players already exploring or playing without the recipe
Fishing Chance-based Fishing time and the required fishing setup Can be time-consuming because the item is not guaranteed Players fishing for other reasons who are willing to wait

No current authoritative percentage is established here for either chest-loot or fishing odds. Treat both as opportunities rather than guaranteed production methods. If you need a tag for a planned build, crafting avoids waiting for a random result once your game version supports it.

How to craft a name tag step by step

  1. Confirm the version. Make sure the world is running a Java or Bedrock release that contains Tiny Takeover. Java 26.1 and Bedrock 26.10 are the release references associated with this change.
  2. Gather one paper. The recipe consumes one paper for each name tag you make.
  3. Gather one valid metal nugget. The recipe accepts any metal nugget recognized by the current version’s name-tag recipe.
  4. Open the crafting interface. Place one paper and one metal nugget in the grid. If the output does not appear, verify the item types, quantities and game version rather than assuming the recipe is unavailable.
  5. Take the name tag from the output. The item is now ready to be renamed in an anvil; it is not yet ready to apply directly to a mob.

How to rename a name tag in an anvil

A newly crafted or discovered tag has to receive a custom name before it can be applied. The anvil is the required naming step.

  1. Open an anvil. Use the anvil interface rather than trying to rename the tag from your inventory.
  2. Put the name tag into the anvil. Place the tag in the anvil’s item slot.
  3. Enter the custom name. Type the exact text you want the mob to display in the anvil text field. This is where you set capitalization, spacing and punctuation.
  4. Take the renamed tag from the output slot. The output item is the version that can be applied to a mob. Keep this renamed tag selected in your hotbar or otherwise ready to use.

The available instructions establish the anvil workflow but do not state a universal experience price. Any cost or availability message shown by your anvil is therefore the value to follow in your edition and current game state.

How to use a renamed tag on a mob

  1. Hold the renamed tag. An unrenamed tag is not the item required for this interaction.
  2. Approach the target mob. Aim at the mob you want to identify.
  3. Use the tag on the mob. Activate the normal use action for your platform while targeting the mob.
  4. Check the result. The mob displays the custom name you entered, and the name tag is consumed during the application.

Because the tag is consumed, apply it only after confirming that you renamed the correct item and are targeting the intended mob. If you want several mobs to carry different names, prepare and rename separate tags before applying them.

Villagers and wandering traders need special care

Using a name tag on a villager or wandering trader renames that mob instead of opening the trading interface. This interaction can surprise players who are trying to trade. Select the trading interaction when you want the trade screen; select the renamed name tag only when renaming is the goal.

The same consumption rule applies: after the renamed tag is successfully used, it is spent and the villager or wandering trader displays the custom name. Position your cursor carefully and verify the selected item before activating the interaction.

Java and Bedrock version guidance

Edition Release reference Name-tag status
Minecraft: Java Edition 26.1 release notes Recipe documented as 1 paper plus 1 metal nugget
Minecraft: Bedrock Edition 26.10 changelog March 24, 2026 Tiny Takeover release includes craftable name tags

The Tiny Takeover FAQ states that the drop is available for both Java and Bedrock. The exact version number matters because Minecraft instructions are often copied forward after a mechanic changes. If your crafting grid does not produce a tag, first compare your installed release with the update that introduced the recipe.

Why an older guide may contradict this article

Before Tiny Takeover, name tags were obtained rather than crafted, so older tutorials commonly direct players to chests or fishing and explicitly say there is no recipe. Those statements describe the earlier mechanic. They should not be used as the authority for a current Java or Bedrock release containing the March 24, 2026 drop.

What to do on an unupdated installation

If you are intentionally playing an older version, or the world has not received the relevant update, use generated-structure chest loot or fishing as the available alternatives. The current crafting quantities cannot be assumed to work until the game is running a version that includes the change.

Troubleshooting a missing or unusable name tag

The recipe does not appear

  • Check whether the edition and version include Tiny Takeover.
  • Verify that you placed exactly one paper and one metal nugget in the crafting interface.
  • Confirm that the nugget is a metal nugget accepted by the current recipe, not a different item with a similar name.
  • If the installation predates the update, use chest loot or fishing instead of expecting a craftable output.

The tag will not rename a mob

  • Return to the anvil and make sure you entered a custom name and collected the output item.
  • Do not try to apply the untouched tag directly; the documented workflow requires an anvil rename first.
  • Check that the renamed tag is the selected item when you use it on the mob.

The wrong interaction opens

  • With villagers and wandering traders, remember that the name-tag use action renames the mob rather than opening trading.
  • Move your aim away from the mob or switch to the normal trading interaction when trading is the objective.
  • When naming, target the intended mob carefully because the tag is consumed on successful use.

The tag seems to disappear

A renamed tag is consumed when it successfully names a mob. Loss after a confirmed naming action is expected behavior, not evidence that the recipe failed. Craft or obtain another tag for the next mob.

Which acquisition route should you choose?

Choose crafting for certainty

Crafting is the clearest option when your version supports it and you have the two ingredients. It converts known resources into a known item without waiting for loot generation or a fishing result. This is especially useful when you are naming several mobs or preparing a project on a schedule.

Choose chest loot when exploration is already part of the plan

Structure chests can provide name tags while you explore. This route avoids gathering the crafting ingredients, but the item depends on generated loot, so a particular chest is not a guarantee. It makes the most sense when you are already searching structures rather than traveling solely for one tag.

Choose fishing when you accept an uncertain wait

Fishing remains an alternative source, but it is chance-based and can take time. It is practical when fishing is already your activity and a name tag would be a useful bonus. It is less suitable when you need a tag immediately for a specific mob.

A practical naming workflow

For a planned naming job, separate the process into preparation and application:

  1. Confirm that your edition and version include the craftable recipe.
  2. Prepare one paper and one accepted metal nugget for each tag you need, or collect tags through chest loot or fishing.
  3. Rename each tag in an anvil before approaching the mobs.
  4. Keep differently named tags distinguishable in your inventory so you do not apply the wrong one.
  5. Target one mob at a time and use the matching renamed tag.
  6. Verify the displayed name immediately, remembering that the tag is consumed after successful use.

This order minimizes accidental use of an unrenamed tag and makes it easier to notice a targeting mistake before the item is spent.
