Minecraft Loom Guide: How to Craft Banners and Use Every Pattern Type

Craft a loom from planks and string, make a six-wool banner, then combine it with dye in the loom. Geometric designs need no pattern item; special motifs such as Creeper Charge, Globe and Flow require matching items and may vary by edition and version.

A loom is Minecraft’s banner-design station. Craft the loom, prepare a blank banner and a dye, then place them in the loom’s banner and dye slots. Choose a design from the pattern list and collect the decorated banner. Some geometric designs use only the banner and dye; specific motifs such as Creeper Charge or Globe also need a matching banner-pattern item in the optional third slot. You can put the finished banner back into the loom to add another layer.

What a loom does

The loom separates banner making into two stages. First, you craft a blank banner from wool and a stick. Second, you use the loom to apply colored designs. Its interface has three inputs:

  • Banner slot: holds the banner that will be changed.
  • Dye slot: supplies the color for the selected design.
  • Optional banner-pattern slot: accepts a named pattern item for motifs that are item-gated.

Once the inputs are valid, the design list shows the patterns available for that combination. Select one and take the result from the output slot. The original banner is consumed by the operation, so keep a spare banner if you want separate copies rather than a single layered flag.

Materials and recipes

Item What it is used for Recipe or requirement
Loom Opens the banner-design interface Two planks and two string
Blank banner Base that receives every design Six wool blocks and one stick
Dye Sets the color of the selected layer Any dye color that you want to apply
Banner-pattern item Unlocks certain named motifs Only required for the special patterns listed below

The loom recipe accepts planks rather than a particular wood species, so the wood type you have available is suitable. Wool color determines the banner’s base color; dye color determines each decoration layer.

How to craft a loom

  1. Open a crafting table or another crafting grid that provides the recipe size you use in your edition.
  2. Place two planks and two string in the loom recipe arrangement.
  3. Move the completed loom to your inventory.
  4. Place the loom where you can access it. Right-click it in Java Edition or use the interact control in Bedrock Edition to open its interface.

If the recipe does not appear, verify that you have both ingredients and that you are using a normal crafting grid rather than a grid with an incompatible recipe context. The loom itself does not require a furnace, fuel or a crafting-table upgrade.

How to craft a blank banner

  1. Collect six wool blocks. They may be the same color if you want a consistent base.
  2. Collect one stick.
  3. Arrange the six wool blocks in the top two rows of the crafting grid and put the stick in the center slot of the bottom row.
  4. Take the banner from the result slot.

This blank banner is the canvas for the loom. If you want several matching flags, craft several blank banners before decorating; each loom operation produces one changed banner.

How to use a loom, step by step

  1. Open the loom. Interact with the placed loom to display its three input slots and pattern list.
  2. Insert the banner. Put the blank or previously decorated banner in the leftmost slot.
  3. Insert the dye. Put the color you want for the next layer in the rightmost slot.
  4. Add a pattern item when needed. Leave the bottom slot empty for ordinary geometric designs. For a special motif, put the matching named banner-pattern item there.
  5. Choose a design. Click or select one of the icons in the pattern list. The preview shows the new layer on your banner.
  6. Collect the output. Move the result banner from the output slot to your inventory.
  7. Repeat for additional layers. Insert that output banner again, choose another dye and design, and collect the next result.

The optional pattern slot does not replace the dye. A special motif still needs a banner and a dye, with its matching pattern item added as the third input.

Pattern families in the loom

The catalog is organized around several visual families. Exact icon names and ordering can differ between editions and releases, but the underlying choices fall into these groups:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Family What it creates Pattern item needed?
Stripes Vertical, horizontal or directional bands No for the standard geometric stripe designs
Crosses Cross-shaped arrangements of the selected dye No for the standard geometric cross designs
Borders Frames around the banner’s edge No for ordinary geometric borders; Bordure Indented is item-gated
Backgrounds Large fields or sections that cover part of the base No for the standard geometric background designs
Gradients Diagonal or vertical shading transitions No for the standard geometric gradient designs
Half sections Top, bottom, left or right portions of the banner No for the standard geometric half-section designs
Diagonals and triangles Slanted divisions and triangular wedges No for the standard geometric designs
Circles and related shapes Centered or curved geometric marks No for the standard geometric designs
Symbols and icons Recognizable motifs such as a creeper face, flower or skull Yes for the named special motifs

Java Edition’s banner-pattern tag reference places 32 designs in its no_item_required group. That group covers borders, circles, crosses, diagonals, gradients, half sections, stripes, triangles and related geometric shapes. Those designs use the banner and dye alone; the optional slot remains empty.

Which patterns need a banner-pattern item?

Special motifs are separate from the no-item geometric catalog. Put the matching item in the loom’s bottom slot or the motif will not be available.

Motif shown by the loom Required pattern item How to handle it
Creeper Charge Creeper Charge banner-pattern item Insert the item with the banner and dye, then select the creeper icon.
Flower Charge Flower Charge banner-pattern item Use the matching flower item; an ordinary flower or a different pattern item is not a substitute.
Thing (Mojang) Thing banner-pattern item Use the item whose name corresponds to the Mojang-style Thing motif.
Globe Globe banner-pattern item Insert the Globe item before selecting the globe design.
Snout (Piglin) Snout banner-pattern item Use the Piglin snout pattern item in the optional slot.
Skull Charge Skull Charge banner-pattern item Insert the skull pattern item; the dye still controls the motif’s color.
Flow Flow banner-pattern item Availability depends on the game edition and release version.
Guster Guster banner-pattern item Availability depends on the game edition and release version.
Bordure Indented Bordure Indented banner-pattern item This is an item-gated border rather than one of the ordinary no-item borders.
Field Masoned Field Masoned banner-pattern item This is an item-gated geometric-style field pattern.

The item name and the loom motif must match. Supplying a different banner-pattern item does not unlock every special design.

Java, Bedrock and version differences

Pattern availability is not universal across every Minecraft build. Before diagnosing a missing icon, identify both the edition and the exact release number shown by your launcher or main menu. A tutorial written for Java Edition cannot safely be treated as a complete Bedrock Edition catalog.

Java’s tag history records Flow and Guster pattern-item tags in the 1.20.5/1.21 development line. It records Bordure Indented and Field Masoned in Java 1.21.2 development. The same history notes that bricks and curly_border were removed from the no-item-required tag at that point. These entries describe changes across development and release lines, not a promise that every older world or edition exposes the same list.

When a guide and your game disagree, trust the pattern list your installed edition provides and check the item’s name in that edition. A missing option may indicate an older release, a different edition or a changed requirement rather than a crafting mistake.

Why a banner pattern is missing

The design icon is absent with only a banner and dye

First check whether the motif is one of the item-gated designs. Creeper Charge, Flower Charge, Thing, Globe, Snout, Skull Charge, Flow, Guster, Bordure Indented and Field Masoned require their matching pattern item. Put that item in the bottom slot, then recheck the list. If the icon is still absent, confirm your edition and release version because the pattern may not exist in that build.

The pattern item is in the slot but nothing changes

  • Make sure the left slot contains a banner rather than wool, paper or another decorative item.
  • Make sure the right slot contains a dye. A pattern item alone cannot color a banner.
  • Check that the item is the exact matching pattern item, not a similarly named object.
  • Remove and reinsert the inputs to refresh the preview if the interface did not update.

The geometric list is shorter than expected

Geometric designs are the no-item-required group, but that group has changed in Java history and can differ by edition. Confirm the installed version before assuming that a removed or renamed design is hidden behind another recipe.

The banner will not accept another layer

Use the decorated banner itself as the next banner input. Then supply a fresh dye and select another design. If you place the original blank banner back instead, you will start a separate design rather than continue the existing layered flag.

Layering designs without losing control of the result

A loom applies one new layer at a time. Plan the order before you spend rare dyes or pattern items:

  1. Start with the banner’s wool color as the background.
  2. Apply broad fields, halves or gradients before small symbols so later details remain visible.
  3. Use a contrasting dye for the focal motif and a closer shade for supporting stripes or borders.
  4. Collect the output after each successful preview. This gives you a recoverable intermediate banner if the next layer looks wrong.
  5. For a different version of the same design, return to the previous intermediate banner instead of trying to remove a layer from the final one.

The loom is additive: it offers new designs to apply, not an eraser for an existing layer. Keeping intermediate banners in separate inventory slots is the safest way to experiment.

Two practical workflows

Quick geometric banner

  1. Craft or obtain a blank banner and open the loom.
  2. Insert the banner and your chosen dye, leaving the pattern-item slot empty.
  3. Pick a stripe, cross, border, gradient, half section, diagonal, triangle or circle from the geometric list.
  4. Collect the output. Reinsert it only if you want another geometric layer.

This route is the fastest when you need a color-coded marker, team flag or simple decorative pattern and do not have a special motif item.

Specific icon or named motif

  1. Confirm that your edition and release include the desired motif.
  2. Place the banner in the left slot and the dye in the right slot.
  3. Place the matching named banner-pattern item in the optional bottom slot.
  4. Select the motif and collect the output.
  5. Reinsert the decorated banner if you want a border, gradient or additional symbol behind or around it.

This route is appropriate when the icon itself matters more than a quick geometric design. The extra item is a gate for that motif, not an alternative dye.

Choosing between geometric and item-gated designs

Your goal Best starting choice What to verify
Fast decoration with common materials No-item geometric pattern Banner, dye and the desired icon in your edition
A recognizable creature, object or emblem Matching special motif Exact pattern item and edition/version support
A layered flag with a strong background Broad field, half section or gradient first Layer order and dye contrast
A framed or finished-looking flag Border as a later layer Whether you need an ordinary border or Bordure Indented
Testing an unfamiliar release One banner, one dye and no pattern item Which icons appear before spending a special item

Before you start: a compact checklist

  • Confirm whether you are playing Java Edition or Bedrock Edition.
  • Note the exact game version, especially for Flow, Guster, Bordure Indented and Field Masoned.
  • Have a loom, a blank banner, at least one dye and, for a special motif, the matching banner-pattern item.
  • Decide whether you want a single layer or a layered design.
  • Keep intermediate banners if you are experimenting; the loom does not provide an erase function.

With those checks complete, the process is deterministic: insert the banner and dye, add the optional matching item when required, select the available design and take the output.
