On Steam for Windows, your Core Keeper world is normally stored at %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowPugstormCore KeeperSteam<user-id>worlds. On Linux, use ~/.config/unity3d/Pugstorm/Core Keeper/Steam/<user-id>/worlds. Replace <user-id> with the Steam-specific folder on that computer.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Core Keeper servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
The neighboring saves folder contains characters, while worldinfos holds companion world metadata. A dedicated server uses its own installation folder, under /Save/worlds. Before moving or replacing anything, close the game and make a backup; pressing Ctrl+Alt+B from the main menu creates CoreKeeperSaves.zip on your desktop.

What each Core Keeper folder contains
worlds: the shared world
World files define the map and the changes made in it: explored areas, buildings, storage, machines, bosses and other persistent world state. If your goal is to move the shared game world to another installation, this is the folder you need first.
saves: your character files
Characters are stored separately from worlds. A world can be copied successfully while a character remains absent if you move only worlds. Copy the relevant character files from the sibling saves directory when you want the same inventory, equipment, skills and character progress.
worldinfos: companion metadata
worldinfos contains metadata associated with worlds. A Core Keeper developer clarified that the worlds themselves are in worlds, characters are in saves, and taking the corresponding worldinfos file is advisable but not mandatory. Include it when transferring a world so the destination has the matching descriptive data.

Finding the world folder on Windows
Windows hides AppData by default, but you do not need to change Explorer’s visibility settings. The address bar accepts the environment variable directly.
- Exit Core Keeper completely. Do not copy a file while the game is writing a save.
- Open File Explorer and click the address bar.
- Enter
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowPugstormCore KeeperSteam, then press Enter. - Open the Steam-specific
<user-id>folder. If more than one exists, inspect the one containing your current files and check its modification times. - Open
worldsto see the world files. Use the siblingsavesfolder for characters andworldinfosfor matching metadata.
If the shortcut does not open, paste the full path with your Windows account name substituted for %USERPROFILE%, or enable hidden items in Explorer and browse through AppData manually. The folder is under LocalLow, not the more familiar AppDataRoaming location.
How to identify the right Windows profile
Do not assume the first folder under Steam is correct. A computer used by several Steam accounts can contain multiple <user-id> directories. Compare the dates of files with your last play session and avoid merging files from separate accounts. If you are unsure, copy each candidate folder to a temporary backup location before testing.

Finding the world folder on Linux
Linux stores the Unity configuration tree in your home directory. The leading dot in .config makes the directory hidden in most file managers.
- Quit Core Keeper and, if applicable, stop the dedicated server before touching its files.
- Open your file manager and enable hidden files, commonly with
Ctrl+H, or open a terminal. - Navigate to
~/.config/unity3d/Pugstorm/Core Keeper/Steam. - Open the Steam-specific
<user-id>directory. - Use
worldsfor the shared world, savesfor characters andworldinfosfor companion metadata.
In a terminal, the equivalent starting command is cd ~/.config/unity3d/Pugstorm/Core Keeper/Steam. The escaped space in Core Keeper is required by most shells. You can list candidate folders with ls -la; the -a option reveals hidden directories such as .config.
Dedicated-server world location
A dedicated server does not use the client profile path for its active world. Its world files are under /Save/worlds inside the server installation. The leading slash in that notation means the Save directory is relative to the server’s installation structure as documented for the server package; locate the installation root first, then open its Save/worlds directory.

Stop the server service before copying or replacing files. A running process can keep a world open and overwrite your manual copy during shutdown. For a server migration, transfer the world files and the corresponding metadata, then verify ownership and permissions so the account that launches the server can read and write them.
Use Core Keeper’s built-in backup before making changes
The quickest full backup is built into the game.
- Launch Core Keeper and wait for the main menu.
- Press
Ctrl+Alt+B. - Find
CoreKeeperSaves.zipon the desktop. - Copy that archive to a second location, such as another drive or a secure cloud storage account.
The archive can be retained as-is or extracted back into the appropriate save directories when restoring. Keep the original archive untouched until you have confirmed that the restored world and character load correctly. A backup made before every transfer gives you a way back if you select the wrong Steam profile or accept the wrong Cloud version.

For a world-only transfer, copy the contents of worlds. For a complete personal migration, include the matching character files from saves and the corresponding metadata from worldinfos.
Best Value
- On the source computer, close Core Keeper and create the built-in
CoreKeeperSaves.zipbackup. - Open the source platform’s normal save path and identify the correct
<user-id>directory. - Copy the needed
worldsfiles. Include the matchingworldinfosfile and any character files fromsavesif the destination should reproduce the same player. - Transfer the copies using your preferred method. Keep the original source files unchanged until the destination is verified.
- Install or launch Core Keeper once on the destination so it creates its save tree, then exit the game.
- Open the destination’s
Steam<user-id>(Windows) orSteam/<user-id>(Linux) directory and make a dated backup of anything already there. - Place the copied files in the destination’s corresponding
worlds, savesandworldinfosfolders. Do not put world files insidesaves; the game treats those directories as different data types. - Start the game and check the world list, map changes and character inventory. If the result is wrong, exit without saving over it and restore the dated backup.
World-only versus complete migration
| What you want | Copy | What will not move automatically |

| Continue alone on a new computer | worlds, your character in saves, and matching worldinfos |

| Move a dedicated-server instance | Server Save/worlds and associated server save data |
Client-only files outside the server installation |
Steam Cloud: why the visible files may not be the newest
Steam’s local Cloud cache is separate from Core Keeper’s normal save tree. Steam documents these default Cloud locations:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Windows:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata - Linux:
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata
These directories are Cloud storage, not a replacement path for the client world’s worlds folder. A Cloud copy can differ from the local files you just found. When Steam detects that difference, it presents a synchronization conflict and asks you which version to keep.
Before choosing either option, copy the local save tree and the Cloud-related files you intend to preserve. Steam Support states that it cannot recover lost saves, so treat a conflict as a data-replacement decision rather than a harmless prompt. Choose the copy whose timestamp and recent progress you can verify, then allow synchronization to finish before launching the game again.
Troubleshooting missing or incorrect worlds
The worlds folder is empty
- Check that you opened the correct
<user-id>directory rather than another Steam account’s folder. - Confirm you are looking in the platform-specific client path, not Steam’s Cloud
userdatacache. - If the world belongs to a dedicated server, inspect the server installation’s
Save/worldsdirectory instead. - Look for a backup archive on the desktop and extract it only after backing up the current destination.
The world appears, but my character is missing
Copy the character files from the source saves directory. Worlds and characters are separate; moving only worlds does not carry over character progress.
The game shows an older version
Stop changing files and make a fresh copy of the current local folder. Then check for a Steam Cloud conflict and compare the dates and contents of your local backup with the Cloud version. Do not delete either copy until you have selected the version that contains the progress you need.

Exit the game, and stop the dedicated server if one is running. Copy files only while no Core Keeper process is writing them. On Linux, also verify that the account launching the game or server has permission to read and write the destination directories.
Quick Recap
A safe save-management checklist
- Close Core Keeper before copying, replacing or deleting save files.
- Use
Ctrl+Alt+Bto createCoreKeeperSaves.zipbefore a migration or repair. - Keep at least one untouched copy outside the game folder.
- Match
worlds, savesandworldinfosdeliberately; they serve different purposes. - Record whether the source is a Windows client, Linux client or dedicated server.
- Back up before resolving a Steam Cloud conflict, because Steam cannot recover a lost save.
- Test the destination world and character before deleting the source files.
