Minecraft fences are low barriers for pens, paths, gardens and base boundaries. Standard wooden fences use planks and sticks, fence gates use four sticks and two planks, and Nether-brick fences provide a non-wood alternative. The exact variants and command identifiers depend on your edition and game version, so use the recipe book in the world where you are building.

What fences do in Minecraft
A fence occupies less visual space than a solid wall but still functions as a practical boundary. Players and mobs normally cannot jump over one, including friendly animals and hostile mobs. Mojang qualifies that rule: a jump-boost effect can allow an entity to clear it. Fences entered Minecraft in August 2010 and remain useful for separating areas, protecting crops from wandering animals, and keeping livestock in a pen.

Fence blocks do not create a complete, opaque wall. You can see through them, and their posts connect to adjacent fences and many nearby blocks. That makes them useful when you need containment without hiding a base, villager area or pasture from view.
- Animal management: enclose sheep, cows, pigs, chickens and other mobs in a controlled area.
- Boundary marking: outline a property, path, bridge, dock or garden without using a full-height wall.
- Lead anchor: attach a lead to a fence post to hitch a horse or another leadable mob.
- Automation: pair a fence gate with redstone components for a controlled entrance.
- Decoration: match the fence material to a house, village, stable, Nether build or modern garden.
Fences also have two less obvious uses documented by Mojang: they can be used as furnace fuel, and placing one beneath a note block produces a bass note. Those functions are separate from the block’s role as a barrier, so do not treat every decorative fence line as a redstone or sound component automatically.

Fence types and wood families
Wood choice controls the fence’s color and texture. The normal overworld families are oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, cherry and pale oak. The Nether contributes crimson and warped wood, and current versions also include bamboo-based building materials. Nether-brick fences are the explicitly non-wood family described by Mojang.
Availability is version-sensitive. A world created on an older release may not contain newer families, and Java and Bedrock can expose different block names or command data. Open the recipe book and search for fence before collecting materials; it shows recipes unlocked and usable in that world.

The table describes families rather than promising that every row exists in every release. Microsoft’s current Bedrock enum includes wood-specific fence and gate entries such as minecraft:jungle_fence, minecraft:spruce_fence, minecraft:warped_fence, minecraft:crimson_fence and bamboo-related identifiers. Treat those names as Bedrock data references for the current stable documentation, not as a guarantee that an old Java world accepts the same command syntax.
How to craft a wooden fence
Materials and output
A standard wooden fence uses four planks and two sticks. The recipe produces three fences. Any supported plank family can be used, including warped and crimson planks; mixing plank types changes the material result or prevents the intended variant, so use one wood family for a matching set.
Three-by-three crafting layout
- Open a crafting table so the full 3×3 grid is available.
- Place one plank in the left column of the top two rows.
- Place one stick in the center column of the top two rows.
- Place one plank in the right column of the top two rows.
- Leave the entire bottom row empty.
- Take the three fences from the result slot.
In compact form, the two occupied rows are plank | stick | plank and plank | stick | plank. If your edition shows a different arrangement or output, follow its recipe book rather than forcing a layout remembered from another version. The recipe book is also the quickest way to confirm whether a newer wood family has been added to your release.
Getting the ingredients efficiently
- Convert logs from the chosen tree or Nether stem into planks before crafting.
- Craft sticks from two planks placed vertically; one pair of planks makes four sticks.
- For a large perimeter, calculate the number of fence blocks first. Each batch of the standard recipe yields three, so gather enough planks and sticks for complete batches plus a gate.
- Keep a few spare planks and sticks in your building chest. Repairs, extensions and replacement gates use the same material family.
How to craft and use a fence gate
Fence-gate recipe
Mojang’s fence-gate guide, published on November 1, 2025, describes the recipe as four sticks and two planks of any kind of wood. Arrange the ingredients in the top two rows of the crafting table with sticks on the outside and planks in the center:

stick | plank | stickarrangement in the second row. - Leave the bottom row empty and collect the resulting gate.
The wood family determines the gate’s color. Use the same family as the surrounding fence when you want a continuous boundary; use a contrasting family when the entrance should stand out.
Opening and closing
Stand next to the gate and use the interaction button to open or close it. A gate is the practical doorway in a fence line: remove one fence block, place the gate in the gap, and leave enough room outside the opening for the player, animals or minecart route you intend to use.
Redstone control
Fence gates respond to redstone power. A simple entrance can use a button on either side, a lever for a persistent open state, or pressure plates for hands-free passage. Mojang also notes that a wind charge can control a gate. The exact circuit is a build choice, so test it in the target edition before repeating it across a large project.
- Place the gate in the fence opening.
- Put a pressure plate, button or lever where the player can reach it.
- Connect the control to the gate with redstone dust or another suitable power path when a direct placement is not possible.
- Activate the control and verify that the gate changes state from the side you need to enter.
- Check the unpowered state after leaving. This prevents an animal pen or secure perimeter from being accidentally left open.
Fence mechanics that affect a build
Jumping and pathing
Players and mobs normally cannot jump over a fence. Mojang’s qualification matters: a jump-boost enchantment or effect can change that result. Do not describe a fence as an absolute barrier when a hostile mob, player or custom game mechanic has enhanced jumping.
A fence is not automatically a complete security system. Open gates, adjacent blocks that create a climbable route, water paths, redstone openings and unlit surroundings can still undermine the design. Walk the perimeter after construction from both sides and inspect corners, gates and changes in elevation.
Leads and hitching points
Use a fence post as a fixed point for a lead. A short line of two or three posts beside a stable, dock or caravan stop makes it easy to park animals without building a full enclosure. Keep the hitching section outside pressure-plate doors and narrow paths so leads do not interfere with normal movement.

Fuel and note blocks
Mojang documents fences as furnace fuel and as a bass-note block beneath a note block. These are useful for clearing surplus wooden items or designing a musical build. Nether-brick fences are a masonry alternative, so do not assume every visual fence family has identical fuel behavior; check the item in your edition before planning a fuel stockpile.
Connections and mixed materials
Wooden fences connect to neighboring fence blocks and can visually meet walls, slabs, trapdoors and other detailing blocks. Connection rules and corner appearances can differ between editions, especially when you mix fences with walls or glass panes. Place a short test segment in the target edition before committing to a long decorative rail.

The broad mechanics are shared, but recipe availability, block names and update timing are not identical across all releases. A current Bedrock identifier can be useful for commands or add-on work, while a Java player should rely on the recipe book and that edition’s command suggestions.
- Recipe confirmation: search the in-game recipe book rather than copying a layout from an old guide.
- Variant confirmation: check whether mangrove, cherry, pale oak, bamboo, crimson or warped families appear in your release.
- Command confirmation: use autocomplete after typing
/giveor/setblock; identifiers can be edition-specific. - Visual confirmation: test fence, wall and pane connections in the edition used by the server or Realm, because a design copied from another edition may join differently.
- Mob testing: verify the actual animals and hostile mobs in your world. The normal no-jump rule is not a substitute for checking special effects, custom maps or unusual terrain.
Fence gates were introduced in the September 2011 Adventure Update. Their core interaction has remained familiar, but newer controls and wood families may require a modern release. When a recipe does not appear, update the game only if the world, server and device support that release; otherwise choose a family already available.
Build ideas that work in survival
1. Starter animal pen
Choose the wood nearest your first base and make a compact rectangle with a matching gate. Leave a two-block-wide entry only if animals or a vehicle need that width; otherwise a one-block gate is easier to secure. Add a small roof or tree cover if you want shade, but do not rely on the fence alone to keep the enclosure safe at night.
- Flatten the pasture and remove holes or one-block drops.
- Place the fence around the perimeter, leaving one opening for the gate.
- Add the gate and test it from both sides.
- Bring animals through with food or leads, then close the gate before breeding.
- Light the interior and the approach so hostile mobs do not spawn in or immediately beside the pen.
2. Mob-resistant base perimeter
Use fences to define the boundary around a base, then handle lighting as a separate survival mechanic. Place light sources inside the boundary, along the outside path and at corners where darkness can collect. The fence provides the physical separation; lighting addresses nearby hostile-mob spawning. The fence itself is not a measured spawn-blocking guarantee.

3. Stable or dock hitching post
Build a short row of spruce, dark oak or another matching material beside a stable, harbor or roadside. Attach leads to separate posts so animals do not overlap. Add a roof, lanterns and a water trough or chest nearby, but keep the posts far enough from the gate that a lead does not block the entrance.
4. Nether fortress styling
Use Nether-brick fences around a fortress entrance, bridge or lava-side walkway when you want a dark masonry language instead of wood. Repeat the material in pillars and arches, and use a Nether-brick gate where the matching option is available. Build a temporary test platform first: lava, fire and narrow ledges make recovery harder if a gap is misplaced.
5. Color-coordinated garden or village
Choose a fence that echoes the dominant palette: birch for a bright garden, cherry for a pink orchard, mangrove for a swamp boardwalk, bamboo for a light tropical screen, or crimson and warped for contrasting Nether districts. Repeat the same family on gates, signs and nearby trapdoors so the boundary reads as intentional rather than leftover material.
6. Redstone entrance
Replace a frequently opened gate with a pressure plate on the approach and a button inside the base. For a secure storage yard, use a lever inside a guarded booth so the gate remains closed when unpowered. Test both the timing and the player’s escape route before adding the circuit to a public server; a gate that opens only from one side can trap players or animals.
7. Layered decorative rail
Alternate fence posts with walls, slabs, lanterns or trapdoors to create a balcony edge, vineyard row or bridge rail. Keep the functional barrier at the height and spacing you actually need, then add decoration behind it. Walls and glass panes connect differently from fences, so make a small sample corner in your edition before building hundreds of blocks.
8. Path and crop protection
Run a fence one block beyond the edge of farmland or a village path, with gates at the points where villagers, players or minecarts need to pass. This keeps wandering animals from trampling crops while preserving a clear route. Add signs or contrasting posts at intersections so the gate is visible during rain, snow or nighttime travel.

Troubleshooting common fence problems
The recipe is missing
Check that you are using a crafting table, not the two-by-two inventory grid, and that the planks belong to a supported family. Search the recipe book for fence. If the family is absent, your game version may predate it, the recipe may be locked until its ingredients are discovered, or a server add-on may alter available recipes.

The fence looks different from a guide
Confirm the edition and release shown by the guide. Wood palettes, newer families and connection visuals change over time. Use the block preview in the recipe book and place a two-block test line before ordering materials for a large build.
Animals keep escaping
Inspect the gate first: an open gate is the most common cause. Then check corners, terrain beside the fence, water channels and any block that gives a mob an alternate route. Re-close the gate after moving animals, and avoid placing climbable decorative blocks directly against the boundary.
The redstone gate does not respond
Verify that the power source reaches the gate, that the dust is not interrupted, and that the button or pressure plate is on the intended side. Remove temporary blocks that may be powering the gate unexpectedly. Test with a lever so you can see the powered and unpowered states without relying on a short pulse.
A command does not recognize the block
Use command autocomplete and check the edition’s current identifier list. Bedrock’s stable data includes wood-specific names such as minecraft:jungle_fence and minecraft:bamboo_fence, but a Java command or an older release may require a different identifier or may not contain that block at all.

- Identify the edition, version and server rules before choosing a newer wood family.
- Pick one fence family and decide whether the gate should match or contrast.
- Count the perimeter and divide the required fences into batches of three from the standard recipe.
- Reserve a clear gate opening and test it with the largest mob or vehicle that must pass.
- Inspect corners, elevation changes, water and adjacent blocks for unintended routes.
- Add lighting separately when the boundary surrounds a survival base or animal pen.
- Use leads on dedicated posts rather than attaching animals beside a busy doorway.
- Test redstone, note-block or mixed-material details in a small sample before scaling up.
Choosing the right fence
For a first survival pen, use the wood you can renew locally and spend the extra material on a gate and lighting. Choose Nether brick when the build needs masonry, a Nether palette or a non-wood visual identity. Select newer families such as bamboo, cherry or pale oak only after confirming that the world supports them. The strongest fence designs treat the block as both infrastructure and trim: a normally impassable boundary, a lead anchor and a color cue that makes paths, farms and entrances easy to read.
