What an endermite is and why it matters
An endermite is a small hostile arthropod created by a player’s ender-pearl teleport attempt. It is not a guaranteed consequence of using a pearl; the game makes a separate spawn roll when the pearl lands. Endermites matter for two very different reasons:
- As a nuisance, one can attack you in a confined area and disappear on the ordinary timed despawn schedule if it is not named.
- As an engineering component, an endermite can lure endermen into a controlled kill chamber because endermen attack endermites.
Microsoft’s 2023 Bedrock vanilla entity definition identifies the entity as minecraft:endermite. That definition records eight maximum health points, attack damage of two, a 16-block nearest-attackable-target radius, and a reward of three experience points when the final hit is made by a player. The Minecraft Wiki’s general gameplay reference supplies the pearl-spawn rule and the enderman-lure relationship. These figures describe the cited Bedrock implementation; do not assume that every Java and Bedrock detail is interchangeable.

Key mechanics at a glance
| Mechanic | Documented value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Spawn trigger | Landing of a player-thrown ender pearl | The trigger described by the cited Minecraft Wiki references |
| Spawn chance | 5% per landed pearl | Independent probability for each attempt; not a guaranteed count |
| Maximum health | 8 | Microsoft Learn, Bedrock vanilla definition (2023) |
| Attack damage | 2 | Microsoft Learn, Bedrock vanilla definition (2023) |
| Nearest attackable target radius | 16 blocks | Microsoft Learn, Bedrock vanilla definition (2023) |
| Player-kill experience | 3 points | Bedrock definition; awarded when a player makes the last hit |
| Normal timed despawn | About two minutes when you move at least 16 blocks away | General gameplay reference; a name-tagged endermite is exempt from this timed rule |
| Item drops | None listed | The mob-farm reference lists no item drops |
The two appearances of “16 blocks” describe separate ideas. Microsoft’s radius is a targeting field in the Bedrock entity definition. The practical escape distance comes from the general despawn guidance. Treat them as related distances, not as one universal rule for every edition.
How to spawn an endermite
You need ender pearls and a location where you can safely inspect the landing area. Because the event is random, prepare the area before you start throwing rather than trying to improvise after a hostile mob appears.
- Choose a controlled landing point. Use a space where you can see the pearl’s landing position, retreat without falling, and keep the endermite away from villagers, pets, redstone controls, or other unintended targets.
- Have the pearls ready. Only the player-thrown pearl landing described by the gameplay references is the established trigger. The cited gameplay references do not establish equivalent behavior for every automated launcher or other mechanism.
- Throw a pearl so it lands in the prepared area. The spawn check occurs when the pearl lands, not merely when it leaves your hand.
- Inspect the landing spot. A successful roll creates the endermite near the landing event. A failed roll simply produces no endermite; it does not mean the next throw is guaranteed to work.
- Repeat as necessary. Continue only while you can safely control the area and still have a clear retreat path. Several attempts may be required because every pearl is a new probability roll.
Preparing for a farm spawn
If the purpose is an enderman farm, build the holding arrangement before deliberately making the spawn attempt. The cited sources establish that endermen attack endermites and therefore can be lured, but they do not provide a complete schematic, minecart layout, or edition-specific construction sequence. Have your containment, transport method, and kill chamber ready so the newly created mob cannot wander into an unrecoverable position.
What the 5% chance really means
The spawn chance is attached to each landed pearl, not to a batch of throws. A 5% chance means the game can fail repeatedly without violating the rule, and it can also succeed on the first attempt. “One endermite every 20 pearls” is an average expectation obtained from the percentage, not a schedule or guarantee.

Why attempts can feel unlucky
After one failed throw, the next throw still has the same per-pearl chance. The game does not build a hidden counter that forces a spawn after a fixed number of failures. Conversely, getting an endermite early does not make another one less likely on the next landing. Plan your pearl supply around uncertainty rather than carrying exactly 20 and assuming that will be enough.
Practical planning
- Keep a safe route away from the landing point before you begin.
- Use a visible, unobstructed area so you can distinguish “no spawn” from a mob hidden behind terrain.
- Stop throwing if the area becomes dangerous or if a pearl could teleport you into a fall or other hazard.
- For a farm, treat the first successful spawn as the valuable resource and secure it immediately instead of continuing to roll unnecessarily.
How to remove an unwanted endermite
Option 1: Kill it directly
Ordinary melee attacks are sufficient because the mob has only eight health points in the cited Bedrock definition. Approach with enough room to step back, strike until it is defeated, and avoid standing in a corner where its attacks can keep you from retreating. In Bedrock, a player who makes the final hit receives three experience points; the reference lists no item drops.

Option 2: Wait for the timed despawn
- Move at least 16 blocks away from the endermite.
- Remain away for approximately two minutes, using the time to secure the area or continue another task.
- Return and confirm that the mob has disappeared.
This is the simplest no-combat solution when you do not need the endermite. It is not the right choice for a farm, because an unnamed mob allowed to follow the ordinary timer can vanish before you finish the build.
Option 3: Contain and preserve it
If the endermite is useful, place it in the prepared holding arrangement and apply a name tag. A name-tagged endermite does not follow the ordinary timed despawn rule described in the general reference, making naming the preservation step for a farm. Containment is still necessary: naming prevents that timed disappearance, but it does not make the mob harmless or stop endermen from attacking it.

Using an endermite in an enderman farm
Endermen attack endermites. A farm exploits that hostility by placing a protected endermite where endermen can detect it and then directing the endermen into a kill chamber. The endermite is bait, not the damage source.
Safe sequence for a lure
- Finish the farm’s containment first. The holding cell, transport arrangement, and kill area should be ready before you create the lure.
- Create the endermite with a player-thrown pearl. Use a landing point connected to the holding arrangement, not an exposed location from which it can wander.
- Secure it immediately. Keep the mob from reaching unintended targets and from being exposed to attacks before you can name it.
- Apply a name tag. This prevents the ordinary timed despawn that would otherwise remove an unnamed lure.
- Verify the lure path in your edition and version. The available sources confirm the attack relationship but do not document a universal Java-and-Bedrock schematic. Check that your containment geometry lets endermen see or reach the intended threat without giving them a route to the player.
Why containment matters
The same hostile relationship that makes an endermite useful can make an open setup dangerous. Endermen may converge on the lure, collide with nearby structures, or reach areas you intended to keep safe. Put the endermite where it cannot escape into your work area, and keep the player’s standing position separate from the mob’s cell and the incoming endermen’s path.

Despawn behavior and name tags
An unnamed endermite is subject to the normal timed despawn guidance: move at least 16 blocks away and allow roughly two minutes. This gives you a reliable way to clear a nuisance without fighting, but it also creates a failure mode for farms. Leaving the build area before naming the lure can result in the endermite being gone when you return.
A name tag changes that preservation decision. Apply it when the endermite is already contained and you are certain it is the one you want to keep. Naming is not a substitute for a cell, a safe route, or edition testing; it only addresses the ordinary timed despawn rule documented for the mob.

Bedrock and Java: what you can safely assume
Microsoft Learn’s 2023 Bedrock vanilla behavior-pack definition provides the strongest numerical evidence. It explicitly records the entity identifier, health, attack damage, targeting radius, and player-kill experience for Bedrock. The pearl chance, timed despawn guidance, and enderman-lure relationship come from general community gameplay references.
No complete Java-versus-Bedrock equivalence table is established here. Therefore:
- Use the 5% pearl rule as the general spawning guidance supplied by the gameplay references.
- Use the eight-health, two-damage, 16-block target-radius, and three-experience figures with their Bedrock qualification attached.
- Test a farm in the exact edition and version you play, especially the holding geometry, detection behavior, and transport method.
- Do not treat an implementation field from a 2023 Bedrock definition as proof that every current Java behavior is identical.
This qualification matters most for technical farms. A casual player who only wants to remove a stray endermite can rely on the practical kill-or-wait choices, while a builder should verify the complete design in the target edition.
Troubleshooting common problems
No endermite appears after a throw
A failed attempt is expected because the spawn check is probabilistic. Confirm that the pearl actually landed in the area you are watching, then make another controlled attempt. Do not conclude that pearls are broken after a small sample, and do not assume a fixed number of failures guarantees the next success.

The endermite disappears while I am building
If it was not named, the ordinary timed despawn is the first thing to check. For a future attempt, prepare the containment before throwing and apply a name tag once the mob is secure. If the mob was named, verify that you are working in the same world and that your edition’s behavior matches the documented rule.

The endermite is hurting me before I can contain it
It is a hostile mob. Retreat along the route you prepared, then either kill it while maintaining space or move at least 16 blocks away and wait for the timed despawn. For a farm, do not keep throwing pearls in the same exposed position; improve the cell and approach path first.

Quick decision guide
| Your goal | Best action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Remove a surprise endermite immediately | Use melee attacks in an open space | Its documented health is low, and a player kill can award Bedrock experience |
| Avoid combat | Move at least 16 blocks away and wait about two minutes | Uses the normal timed despawn behavior |
| Build an enderman farm | Contain it, then apply a name tag | Preserves the lure beyond the ordinary timed despawn window |
| Spawn one deliberately | Throw player-held pearls into a prepared landing area | Each landing receives the documented spawn roll |
