The easiest Minecraft elevator is a water bubble column: put soul sand beneath a column of water source blocks to ride up, or magma beneath a separate column to descend. The key detail is that every water block in the shaft must be a source block; flowing water breaks the bubble column.
What you need for a basic water elevator
- Solid blocks to enclose a narrow vertical shaft
- Water source blocks, or a water bucket and kelp to convert flowing water into source blocks
- Soul sand for the upward shaft
- Magma for an optional downward shaft
A bubble column forms when soul sand or magma is under source water. Soul sand pushes entities upward, while magma pulls them downward. The column stops at flowing water or waterlogged blocks. Minecraft Wiki: Bubble Column

Build the upward elevator
- Make the shaft. Build or excavate a one-block-wide vertical passage between the floors you want to connect. Enclose it with solid blocks so the water stays in place, and leave an entrance near the bottom.
- Fill it with water source blocks. In Survival, fill the shaft before installing soul sand; swimming down through an active upward bubble column is difficult. You can instead pour water from the top and place kelp upward through the falling water to turn it into source blocks. Minecraft Wiki: Tutorials/Elevators
- Place soul sand at the base. Once the column is made of source water, put soul sand at the bottom. Step into the water at the entrance; the bubbles carry you up.
Add a separate downward route
For a reliable two-way setup, make a second enclosed shaft and fill it with source water. Put magma at its base to pull a player downward. Give the shaft a safe exit and landing: the tutorial warns that reaching magma can hurt a player who does not sneak. The downward trip is slower than the upward lift, so allow enough time and avoid an abrupt, hazardous landing. Minecraft Wiki: Tutorials/Elevators
Travel speed differs by edition
The Minecraft Wiki reports these approximate bubble-column movement rates. They are game-mechanics figures, not independently measured performance tests.

Fix common water-elevator problems
The bubbles stop partway up
Check the full column for flowing water or waterlogged blocks. Replace or convert those spaces so each block in the column is a source block. Kelp is a practical way to convert a falling water column during construction.

You cannot swim down to place the base
In Survival, fill the shaft before placing soul sand. Installing it first activates the upward push and makes descending through the water difficult.
The downward shaft causes damage
Make the exit and landing safe rather than stepping straight onto the magma block. The elevator tutorial warns that a player may be hurt at the bottom if they do not sneak.

When a bubble column is not the right fit
The Minecraft Wiki’s elevator tutorial also covers piston, boat, minecart, honey-block, and command-based designs. Those approaches have different material and complexity trade-offs. For a straightforward vertical route, the water-column design avoids the extra machinery or command setup those alternatives may require. Minecraft Wiki: Tutorials/Elevators
