Its connected world, jumping, quests, and expanded equipment systems make the sequel feel broader than the original, but early reviews disagree on whether that added scope brings enough depth to overcome familiar combat and repetition.
The game launched on September 29, 2026, for Windows and Steam as well as console platforms. This review weighs the available PC-specific evidence separately from hands-on impressions gathered on Xbox Series X.

What is new in Minecraft Dungeons II?
The clearest structural change is a connected world rather than a sequence of separate missions. Official Xbox preview material describes a fixed world dotted with dungeons, while Mojang design director Laura De Llorens said players can travel “from the beginning of the world to the end of the world, just walking.” Fast travel and quests provide alternatives to walking the full distance.
The world includes the Overworld and a new dimension called the Sift. Jumping adds a traversal option, and official materials describe expanded weapons, enemies, and equipment systems. De Llorens said the gear systems are intended to let players shape combat more to their liking. Those changes give exploration and equipment a larger role, but do not by themselves establish the level of mechanical complexity found in more demanding action RPGs.
#1 Best Overall
- A NEW DUNGEONS ADVENTURE — Fight against a powerful new threat in an all‑new chapter that expands the Minecraft Dungeons universe across the Overworld and beyond.
- CRAFT YOUR PERFECT HERO — Build your ideal playstyle with legendary gear, including a wide variety of weapons, armor, and artifacts designed for different combat strategies.
- ACTION‑PACKED CO‑OP — Team up in a party of up to four players and combine abilities to overcome enemies with coordinated attacks and teamwork.
- EXPLORE DYNAMIC WORLDS — Journey through diverse environments filled with enemies, secrets, and challenges that encourage exploration and replayability.
- FAST‑PACED DUNGEON COMBAT — Test your skills against increasingly challenging foes in combat that rewards timing, positioning, and gear customization.
De Llorens described the Sift as part of an effort to expand Minecraft’s world while honoring both the original Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons. That is the developer’s design intent, rather than an independent assessment of how fully the dimension succeeds.
How does it play, and is there enough depth?
The available reviews point to a sequel that refines the original’s approachable formula instead of reinventing it. Worthplaying’s PC review praised connected exploration, more flexible equipment and enchantment systems, and straightforward combat. The reviewer also cautioned that players looking for deeper ARPG systems may find it lacking.
GamesRadar+ reviewer Justin Towell, writing after completing the story and continuing into endgame on Xbox Series X, praised responsive movement, readable action, and experimentation. The same review raised repetition, bugs, and endgame friction as drawbacks. These are Xbox Series X observations, not PC performance findings.
Rank #2
- DELUXE EDITION CONTENT — Includes the base game plus the Soul Pack with 4 hero skins, the Soul Cape cosmetic item, the Blub pet companion, and access to DLC 1 & 2 for expanded post‑launch content.
The difference matters when judging replay value. More connected exploration and gear options create reasons to roam and experiment, but the available reviews do not present the sequel as a major leap in combat-system depth. If your priority is an easy-to-follow dungeon crawler for shared play, that accessibility may be a strength. If your enjoyment depends on intricate builds and sustained endgame systems, the critical comments are a reason to temper expectations.
What do PC reviews and player ratings say?
Worthplaying’s Cody Medellin reviewed a PC press build and scored it 8.0/10 on September 28, 2026. The review reported smooth performance when many creatures were onscreen on that reviewer’s setup. It did not provide a broad hardware test, so the result should not be treated as a guarantee for other PCs.
Professional reaction is generally positive but not unanimous. Nintendo Life reported the following aggregate scores on October 2, 2026; these are dated figures, not live totals.
Rank #3
- English Version
- Includes the Minecraft Dungeons II base game and deluxe edition, including 4 hero skins, the cosmetic item Soul Cape, Blub as a pet and DLC 1 & 2 (available on release)
- Face a new, massive threat that puts your combat skills to an unprecedented test
- Experience a brand new chapter in the saga of Minecraft Dungeons that takes you through the upper world... and beyond
- Create the perfect hero figure with legendary gear, including a wide range of weapons, armor and artifacts
| Measure | Reported score | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Metacritic | 75/100 | Nintendo Life, October 2, 2026 |
| OpenCritic | 77/100 | Nintendo Life, October 2, 2026 |
| Steam English user reviews | 67% positive from 4,834 reviews | Steam page snapshot, October 7, 2026 |
The critic aggregates reflect different outlets and platforms, not a PC-only consensus. Nintendo Life’s roundup showed the range of views: Destructoid praised the game, while IGN criticized its shallowness and GameSpot saw added depth without radical reinvention. Steam’s percentage is a changing snapshot of English-language user reviews, not a representative survey of all owners.

The available PC review is useful for a single setup, but it does not establish performance across common hardware configurations. The official and reviewed pages covered here do not provide a minimum or recommended system-requirements table, so there is no grounded basis here for promising a particular frame rate or naming a suitable PC specification.
Worthplaying’s press-build review also noted Steam Big Picture menu unresponsiveness and launch problems on Linux and Steam Deck at the time it was written. The reviewer cautioned that retail compatibility could differ. Current Linux and Steam Deck behavior is not established by that report, so check recent patch notes and compatibility reports before buying specifically for those platforms.

Can you play co-op on PC, including cross-play?
Yes. The official FAQ lists couch co-op, online cross-play, and mixed co-op, where players on one console or PC can join other players online. The FAQ also says matchmaking is available and that sessions adapt as players join or leave; those matchmaking details come from De Llorens’s developer interview.
GamesRadar+’s Xbox Series X review describes local, online, and mixed co-op, with players at substantially different levels able to play together and receive player-specific loot. That is a hands-on observation from the Xbox version, not a PC-specific test.
For couch play on a Windows PC, an Xbox Wireless Controller is one optional controller choice: Microsoft lists it as compatible with Windows 10 and 11 over Bluetooth. The cited information does not say that this particular controller is required or document title-specific setup.

Do you need to play the first game?
No. The official FAQ says Minecraft Dungeons II is a sequel and that the original is not required. Returning players may recognize references, but the FAQ does not make prior play a prerequisite.
The FAQ also describes a time-limited Hero Cape offer for people who played the first game: log into Dungeons II with the same Microsoft account before December 31, 2026. It says prior play through Game Pass or Steam can qualify when that same-account condition is met. It also says you do not need to own either game to join a friend’s co-op session, subject to the FAQ’s account and internet conditions. Check the official FAQ for the current offer terms.
Platforms, editions, and purchase routes
The official FAQ lists Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Xbox lists a September 29, 2026 release date and support for Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11. Its listing also identifies Xbox Play Anywhere and Game Pass availability. Store availability, regional pricing, and edition contents can change.
Recommended Free Tools
Steam lists Mojang Studios and Double Eleven as developers and Xbox Game Studios as publisher. Steam offers a standard listing and a separate Deluxe Edition. Xbox describes the Deluxe package as including four hero skins, a Soul Cape, a Blub pet, and two DLC packs; the official FAQ says those packs are included when released. Check the storefront for current regional terms before purchasing.
Is Minecraft Dungeons II worth it on PC?
It is most compelling if you want a readable, approachable dungeon crawler with a more connected setting and flexible ways to play with friends across platforms. The stronger exploration structure and expanded gear systems address some of the original’s constraints without making the sequel an especially complex ARPG.
For a purchase decision, the main caveat is not a proven PC performance problem but the limited scope of the available PC evidence: one press-build review does not establish how the retail game runs across hardware, and current Linux or Steam Deck compatibility is unverified here. The broader review picture is encouraging but mixed on depth, repetition, and bugs.
