Nintendo lists the Switch 2 version for up to four players locally or online. The main caveat for Switch 2 buyers is that the available launch review tested the game on Xbox Series X, so it does not establish how well the game performs on Nintendo’s console.
What kind of sequel is Minecraft Dungeons II?
Minecraft Dungeons II is a standalone action-RPG sequel set in the Minecraft universe. Mojang says newcomers do not need to play the first game before starting Minecraft Dungeons II. Its story follows rifts opening across the Overworld, a new dimension called the Sift, and the Illager High Council.

The sequel moves beyond the original’s discrete mission structure toward a more connected world with dungeons to explore, according to Xbox Wire’s June preview. That preview also describes a jump ability, new gear slots, and more room to shape a build. These are promising changes to the format, though they do not amount to a reinvention of the core dungeon-crawling action.
How does it play, and what do reviews praise or criticize?
The combat is approachable, with enough gear and enchantment choices to encourage experimentation. GamesRadar+ found the game balanced and rewarding when players carefully choose enchantments, with accessible action for younger players and additional depth for those who want to tune their characters. Its launch review estimates the main story at around 10 hours; that is the reviewer’s approximate campaign estimate, not a guaranteed playtime.

The same reviewer says the loop starts to feel samey after about five hours and finds the endgame more frustrating. The review also reports bugs, including getting stuck after a jump and keys or follower characters disappearing until the game is reloaded. Windows Central’s review roundup similarly describes a refined rather than radically different sequel, noting stronger build variety, combat, traversal, exploration, and post-game activities alongside repetition, loot overload, and progression-blocking bugs.
These are review observations, not assurances that every player will encounter the same problems. GamesRadar+ played its review copy on Xbox Series X, supplied by the publisher. No independent Switch 2 performance analysis is established here, so there is no sound basis to promise a particular frame rate, resolution, loading time, battery life, or level of stability on Nintendo’s system.

Is Switch 2 co-op good for playing with friends?
Co-op is a major reason to consider the game. Nintendo’s U.S. Switch 2 listing specifies one to four players on one system and one to four players online. Nintendo Japan adds matchmaking and mixed co-op: local players sharing a console can join friends playing online. That makes it possible, for example, for two people on one console to play with two friends elsewhere.

Mixed local-and-online play is a new option compared with the first game, according to development team member Laura de Llorens in an Xbox Wire interview. Online features on Nintendo require internet access and a Nintendo Switch Online membership, sold separately by Nintendo.

What is new about character builds?
The game’s gear includes weapons, armor, enchants, talismans, and artifacts, according to Mojang’s launch description. Nintendo Japan gives a more concrete picture of the armor system: it is split into four parts—head, torso, leggings, and boots—rather than treated as a single item.

Talismans add passive effects, such as increased attack power or loot-drop rates, and grow stronger as they level up, Nintendo Japan says. Along with the new gear slots described in Xbox Wire’s preview, these systems offer more ways to tailor a character. The trade-off is that a bigger pool of loot can also feel like loot overload, a criticism raised in reviews.

Nintendo’s U.S. Switch 2 product listing presents a digital edition, with an estimated 6 GB file size and support for TV, tabletop, and handheld modes. Nintendo Japan reported digital availability for Switch 2 and the original Switch on September 29, 2026, and announced a Switch 2 package edition scheduled for September 30. It separately scheduled the original Switch package edition for November 10. Those were announced Japanese release plans; they do not establish a confirmed U.S. physical SKU, current stock, cartridge contents, or compatibility for a particular imported copy.
For Xbox and PC players, Xbox Wire says the release is included with Game Pass and supports Xbox Play Anywhere. Those benefits apply to the Xbox/PC option, not the Nintendo version. Compare live regional prices and the value of portability or local play against subscription access before choosing a platform.
Should you buy Minecraft Dungeons II for Switch 2?
It is a reasonable choice for players who want accessible dungeon-crawling with friends, especially if they will use local or online co-op and enjoy experimenting with gear. The sequel adds build options and a more connected world, but reviews suggest that the action can become repetitive and the endgame may frustrate players looking for a long-term loot chase.
Buy with the Switch 2 caveat in mind: co-op support and play modes are officially listed, but the review evidence discussed here comes from Xbox Series X. Anyone deciding primarily on Switch 2 performance should wait for console-specific testing rather than infer it from another platform.
