Android apps can now check security patch status separately for the Android system, Google Play system-update modules, and the kernel. Google’s AndroidX Security State libraries expose the installed patch state, compare it with published Android baselines, and—when an update provider supplies the data—report updates waiting to install. They assess software patch compliance, not whether a device is authentic or tamper-free.
What AndroidX Security State reports
The client library organizes patch information around three dimensions: what is installed, what Android has published as a baseline, and what an on-device update provider says is available. That distinction matters because system, modular components, and kernel updates do not share a single patch cadence.

The tracked areas are the Android system, modular system components delivered through Google Play system updates (Project Mainline), and the kernel. Kernel posture is evaluated against Linux LTS versions rather than a monthly calendar date. Google’s launch announcement describes the component-level view; the official implementation guide documents the API behavior.
Which library and release should developers use?
Android announced stable AndroidX Security State 1.1.0 and Security State Provider 1.0.0 on 17 September 2026. AndroidX release notes date both artifact releases to 9 September 2026. The client release supports unified querying across system, Mainline modules, and kernel, as well as discovery of pending updates through registered providers. The companion provider release supplies an UpdateInfoService framework to standardize available-patch reporting, with Kotlin coroutine and Java ListenableFuture support and configurable caching, rate limiting, and error handling. The documented dependency example is androidx.security:security-state:1.1.0, added from Google’s Maven repository. Reading local patch state does not require a declared permission. Fetching OSV vulnerability data requires android.permission.INTERNET; communication with trusted update providers uses on-device IPC. The companion provider library is intended for OEMs and OTA-client developers implementing standardized availability reporting.

Google says Play system-update availability is exposed across GMS Android devices, and system OTA availability is exposed for devices using Google’s OTA client (GOTA). OEM update-client onboarding is ongoing, so ASPL should not be assumed to cover every manufacturer’s OTA updates. Confirm which providers are present and whether their reported data is fresh.

How to use the data in an app or enterprise policy
- Set a policy baseline. Decide which system, Mainline, or kernel patch state is required for the workflow. The library supplies status; the organization or app must define what counts as acceptable.
- Read installed state. Query DSPL for the relevant components and compare the results with the required baseline before a sensitive operation.
- Check for pending remediation. Query available updates asynchronously. If an appropriate update is waiting, guide the user to system settings or apply the organization’s update process instead of treating every lagging device as permanently noncompliant.
- Handle provider freshness. In compliance-sensitive apps, inspect
queryAllAvailableUpdates()results and provider freshness timestamps, includinglastCheckTimeMillis, rather than relying only onfetchAvailableSecurityPatchLevel(). - Use vulnerability-specific checks when needed. Load an OSV vulnerability report into memory before calling published-level, CVE, or full-update checks. The documented CVE helper does not evaluate kernel CVEs.
Potential uses include protecting high-value payments, credential enrollment, corporate resources, biometric access, NFC, or Bluetooth operations. The appropriate response depends on risk: a consumer app might warn and prompt for an update, while an enterprise policy may gate a sensitive workflow until its defined baseline is met.

Available updates can be ambiguous
fetchAvailableSecurityPatchLevel() may fall back to the current device level if a provider times out or reports no pending update. That result alone may not distinguish a genuinely current device from a stale or unavailable provider response. For strict decisions, inspect the complete provider results and their freshness timestamps.

CVE checks need an OSV report
Published-level, CVE, and full-update checks that depend on vulnerability data require an OSV report to be loaded first; calling those methods without one raises IllegalStateException. The documented CVE helper does not assess kernel vulnerabilities. Kernel status is evaluated against published Android Common Kernel LTS target versions instead.
Patch compliance is not an authenticity verdict
Android’s official “Understand device security state” guide says: “The Security State library evaluates software patch compliance and update availability. To assess hardware-backed device authenticity, detect device tampering, or verify app licensing, use the Play Integrity API in conjunction with this library.” Treat patch posture and device integrity as separate signals when the threat model requires both.
