Nike CEO Elliott Hill’s message to customers centers on three connected ideas: put athletes first, create inspiring products and stories, and focus more sharply on consumers while improving execution. Those are a useful summary of his remarks—not a formal three-point list he announced.
Who is Nike’s CEO, Elliott Hill?
NIKE announced Hill’s appointment on September 19, 2024, and he became President and CEO on October 14, 2024. He had spent 32 years at Nike before retiring in 2020, according to the company’s appointment announcement. The customer-focused comments below come from a NIKE interview published October 21, 2024.

1. Put athletes at the center
Hill describes “athlete” broadly: “If you have a body, you are an athlete.” His point is that Nike should make decisions with the people who use its products in mind—not only elite competitors. He says athlete insight should shape both product innovation and storytelling.

In the October 21, 2024 interview, Hill said, “We will put the athlete* at the center of everything we do,” and added, “I want us to put the athlete at the center of everything we do, and show them that magic you can only get from Nike.”

2. Make innovation and storytelling inspiring
For Hill, innovation is not only about making a new shoe or garment. He ties Nike’s mission to inspiration, innovation and the athlete, and says the company should create products and stories that are both innovative and compelling. That connects what Nike sells with how it tells stories about sport and the people who participate in it.
3. Focus on consumers and improve execution
Hill also called for Nike to “Get back to a sharp focus on the consumer.” In the interview, he acknowledged areas needing improvement and described assigning leaders and teams to address them, with accountability for progress. That is a stated direction and management approach; it does not, by itself, show that every improvement has already reached shoppers.

How Nike says it will put those ideas into practice
In a later UC Berkeley Haas interview, Hill described organizing around sport-specific teams and pursuing a more balanced marketplace strategy. He said customer and athlete focus should guide product and channel decisions, rather than relying on only one route to market. His framing is that sport-specific focus and consumer choice should inform where Nike puts its attention.

What the results do—and don’t—show
Nike’s fiscal 2025 third-quarter revenue was $11.3 billion, down 9% year over year. The quarter ended February 28, 2025, and the company released results on March 20, 2025. Hill said the quarter showed the impact of leading with sport through athlete storytelling, performance products and major sports moments; the figure is a dated business result, not a current revenue update. The three takeaways capture what Hill said Nike should prioritize. They are not proof that the company has completed its reset or delivered every promised change.
