The safest way to craft any variant is to search deepslate in Minecraft’s recipe book. The book shows the supplies and pattern for your edition and current game version, while the furnace and, in Java Edition, the smoker recipe interfaces can show smelting recipes.

What deepslate is and why it matters
Deepslate is a block family generated below the surface of the Overworld. It is both a mining material and a building palette: breaking it normally gives you cobbled deepslate for utility crafting, while processing the family produces cleaner or patterned finishes for structures.

Where to find deepslate
Look underground in the Overworld
Deepslate generates underground in the Overworld. You can encounter it while exploring caves or digging a mine; the block is part of the underground stone layers rather than a surface resource. Deepslate ore variants generate in the same deepslate and tuff regions described for the underground deepslate layer, so seeing deepslate is also a useful sign that you are in the right geological area for those ores.

World-generation rules and the way a particular version presents underground layers can differ. If you are following an older tutorial that gives one fixed Y-level, treat it as version-specific instead of a universal rule. The durable instruction is to continue mining underground in the Overworld and identify the deepslate layer by the block itself.
Recognize the block before you mine
Once you see the deepslate texture in a cave wall or tunnel, switch to a pickaxe. Deepslate is a pickaxe-mined block; mining it with the required tool is the intended way to collect the material. Keep a few pickaxes available because a long deepslate tunnel can consume tools before you finish gathering the amount needed for a build.
Collect ore and building material together
Deepslate ore variants occupy the same broad deepslate/tuff underground regions. When you find an ore embedded in deepslate, mine the surrounding blocks as well if you need building stock. This avoids making a second trip solely for deepslate after you have already reached the correct underground area.
What normal mining gives you
In ordinary mining, plan your inventory around cobbled deepslate. The practical mined form is not the smooth-looking block used in decorative screenshots; it is cobbled deepslate, which you can immediately route into utility recipes or process into the decorative families.

Do not assume that every edition, enchantment or special tool produces the same result. Drop behavior outside normal mining can depend on the edition and version. If you are testing a special tool or an enchantment, check the recipe and item information shown by your current game rather than applying a rule from a different release.
What cobbled deepslate can craft
Mojang’s Java 1.17 notes describe cobbled deepslate as usable for the same broad early utility role as stone. The confirmed categories are basic stone-equivalent tools, furnaces and brewing stands.

The recipe book is authoritative for your installation. It prevents a common mistake: remembering a stone recipe but overlooking a changed ingredient, an edition difference or a recipe that is not yet unlocked in the current world.
How to open and use the recipe book
Use the following workflow whenever you are unsure how to make a deepslate item:

- Open the crafting interface and locate the recipe-book button beside the crafting grid.
- Activate the search field and type
deepslate. Search results narrow to matching blocks, shapes and items. - Select the result you want. The interface displays the required supplies and the arrangement, if the recipe uses a shaped pattern.
- Gather the displayed ingredients. If the result is locked, inspect the recipe entry or advancement requirements shown by your edition.
- Use the recipe-book button to place the ingredients automatically when that option is available, then craft the output.
- For a smelting result, open a furnace and use its recipe book. Java Edition also exposes recipes in the furnace and smoker interfaces, so check there when a decorative block is made by heat rather than by the crafting grid.
This procedure is especially important for deepslate because the family has several similar names. “Polished,” “bricks,” “tiles,” “chiseled,” “slab,” “stairs” and “wall” are separate results, and the book lets you verify which intermediate material each one expects.
Polished deepslate
Polished deepslate is the refined, clean-faced member of the family. It is primarily a decorative block rather than a replacement for the cobbled utility recipes. To make it, search for polished deepslate and follow the displayed deepslate-family recipe in your edition. The game will show whether your version expects cobbled deepslate or another family form and will place the exact quantity in the grid when you select the recipe.

Polished blocks work well for uninterrupted floors, pillars and trim where you want a controlled surface without the visible pattern of bricks or tiles. They also serve as an intermediate material for other deepslate finishes in versions whose recipe book lists them that way.
Deepslate bricks
Deepslate bricks provide a block-patterned finish. Search for deepslate bricks in the crafting book, select the result and confirm the supplied deepslate-family ingredient before crafting. Because the game displays the current pattern, this method remains correct when recipe presentation differs between Java and Bedrock or changes in a later update.
Cracked deepslate bricks
Cracked deepslate bricks are made through the documented smelting path rather than treated as an unrelated mining drop. Place the source material and fuel in a furnace, select the cracked-brick result in the furnace recipe interface when it is available, and wait for the output. The recipe book shows the exact input for your release; do not substitute a different brick family merely because its name looks similar.
Deepslate tiles
Deepslate tiles use a repetitive, geometric texture that reads differently from the larger pattern of bricks. Find deepslate tiles in the recipe book and let the interface identify the required intermediate material. The displayed recipe is the reliable answer for your edition and version, especially if you are moving between Java and Bedrock.
Cracked deepslate tiles
The cracked tile variant follows a smelting route documented for the deepslate family. Select the cracked-tile result in the furnace interface, load the shown source block and fuel, and collect the output when smelting completes. If the result is not listed, confirm that you selected the tile family rather than the brick family and that the game version supports the variant.
Chiseled deepslate
Chiseled deepslate is an accent block with a carved face. It is intended for focal points such as entrances, borders, columns and decorative bands rather than for every wall in a large structure. Search for chiseled deepslate to see the current recipe and its required deepslate-family components. The recipe book avoids confusing this carved block with similarly named slabs or with the brick and tile textures.

Slabs, stairs and walls
Slabs, stairs and walls extend four principal families: cobbled, polished, brick and tile. This gives you matching transitions from a full block to a half-height surface, a climbable slope or a low barrier.

To make a shape, search the full name—for example, polished deepslate stairs—instead of assuming that a full-block recipe automatically converts into every shape. The recipe book or stonecutter options available in your current version will show which transformation is supported and what it consumes.
Choosing the right deepslate form
Use three questions to decide what to craft first:
- Do you need function or appearance? Keep cobbled deepslate for basic tools, furnaces and brewing stands. Process it into polished, brick, tile or chiseled forms when the goal is construction.
- Which texture fits the build? Polished is the cleanest and most restrained; bricks create a visible block pattern; tiles create a tighter geometric repetition; chiseled blocks work as occasional accents.
- Will the structure need transitions? Reserve some material for the matching slabs, stairs and walls. A build that uses only full blocks can look unfinished at corners, entrances and changes in elevation.
A practical stockpile therefore contains both cobbled blocks for utility and a planned amount of one decorative family. Converting everything immediately can leave you without the material needed for a furnace, tool or brewing stand, while keeping everything cobbled limits your building choices.
A complete mine-to-build workflow
- Prepare a pickaxe. Deepslate is mined with a pickaxe, so do not begin an underground collection trip without one.
- Enter an Overworld cave or mine. Continue underground until deepslate appears. Avoid relying on one universal Y-level because generation details are version-dependent.
- Mine a working reserve. Collect cobbled deepslate first. Set aside enough for any utility recipes you expect to use before processing the rest.
- Choose a visual family. Decide whether your structure needs polished, brick, tile or chiseled surfaces, and whether matching shapes will be required.
- Search every recipe. Use the crafting recipe book for full blocks and shapes. Use the furnace interface for cracked brick or cracked tile results.
- Process only what the design needs. Keep some cobbled deepslate unprocessed for repairs, tools, furnaces or brewing-related crafting.
- Build with shape changes in mind. Combine full blocks with the corresponding slabs, stairs and walls so that entrances, edges and elevation changes use the same texture family.
Edition and version differences
The deepslate family arrived with Caves & Cliffs Part I in both Java and Bedrock. Bedrock’s release notes describe deepslate-derived ore generation and the ability to craft polished, tile and brick blocks with slab, stair and wall forms. The shared family does not guarantee identical menus or recipe presentation, however.
Recipe interfaces, unlock behavior and the list of displayed variants can change with updates. Java Edition exposes recipes in the furnace and smoker interfaces as well as the crafting interface; Bedrock may present the controls differently. Treat the in-game recipe book as the final authority for the edition and version you are playing.
Troubleshooting common problems
“I cannot find deepslate.”
Move farther underground in the Overworld and look for the deepslate layer in cave walls or newly exposed tunnel faces. Do not judge your location by a fixed depth copied from an older version; world generation is not identical across every release.

“I mined it, but I got cobbled deepslate.”
That is the expected result of normal mining. Use the cobbled blocks for utility recipes or select a polished, brick, tile or chiseled recipe to process them into a building material.

“The recipe I remember is not shown.”
Search the exact item name, check that you are using the correct interface and read the ingredient arrangement shown for your edition. A Java recipe and a Bedrock recipe can be presented differently, and a later update can alter available variants.
“I want cracked bricks or tiles, but crafting does not work.”
Check the furnace recipe list. The cracked brick and cracked tile forms use a documented smelting path, so they may not appear as ordinary crafting-grid outputs.
“I cannot find a slab, stair or wall recipe.”
Search for the complete shape name and the family name together. For example, search for the polished or tile stair specifically rather than looking only at the full-block result. If your version offers stonecutting for the family, inspect the stonecutter interface as well.
