Minecraft connection errors usually come from one of five gates: incompatible editions or versions, an offline host or service, account and multiplayer permissions, an unsuitable subscription, or a local network problem. Check those gates in that order. Updating every player’s game, confirming the correct edition and build, verifying who must be online, and signing in again resolves many failures without changing router settings.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Start with the connection type
The right fix depends on what you are trying to join. A Java server, a Bedrock friend world, a LAN world, and a Realm use different discovery and authentication paths. Identify the row that matches your situation before changing settings.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Connection | Edition compatibility | Must the host be online? | Account and subscription requirements | First diagnostic check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Java server | Java Edition clients must use a server that supports their Java version. Java and Bedrock do not directly join one another. | Yes, unless the server is running as an independently hosted service. | Use the required game account and any server-specific access rules. A console subscription is not relevant to a Java PC connection. | Open Multiplayer, recheck the server address and supported version, then confirm the server is online. |
| Bedrock friend world | Bedrock players need a compatible Bedrock release. A Java player cannot join it directly. | Yes. The host must be in the world with multiplayer enabled. | Players must be Microsoft-account friends and have multiplayer permissions. Console players may need Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online. | Have the host enter the world, then use Play > Friends > Joinable Friends. |
| Bedrock LAN world | All devices need a supported Bedrock version and LAN-capable hardware. | Yes. The host’s device must keep the world open. | Multiplayer must be allowed on each account. The devices must be on the same local network. | Confirm both devices are on the same non-isolated LAN and that Visible to LAN Players is enabled. |
| Realm | Players need a current, compatible version for the Realm’s edition. | No. A Realm can remain available when its owner is offline. | The Realm subscription must be active; console players also need the relevant online-play subscription and account permissions. | Check Realm status, subscription status, supported device, and current game version. |
Minecraft Help describes outdated versions as a common cause of multiplayer problems. Do not use a snapshot or preview build for a normal multiplayer session unless every participant and the server or Realm supports that same compatible build.
Universal checks before changing advanced settings
- Match the edition. Java players join Java-hosted games; Bedrock players join Bedrock-hosted games. Owning Minecraft on one edition does not make a world in the other edition joinable.
- Update every participant. Install the latest ordinary release on the host, joining device, and server where applicable. A newer world can produce a version error for a player on an older release.
- Confirm the host or service is available. A friend world and most private servers require the host to be online. A Realm is different: it should be available independently while its subscription is active.
- Check the internet or LAN. Test another online service on the same device. For LAN, verify that both devices are genuinely on the same local network rather than separate guest or VLAN networks.
- Check account permissions. Multiplayer can be disabled by privacy settings or a child-account restriction. The adult family-account owner controls a child account’s multiplayer permission.
- Check console online access. Console multiplayer may require Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online, depending on the platform.
- Check service status when several players fail. Minecraft, PlayFab, or Xbox service interruptions can prevent authentication, joining, or Realms access. If other players cannot connect at the same time, wait for the service to recover before changing local settings.
Custom DNS entries and manually changed ports can conflict with Minecraft. Return to the network’s normal DNS and port configuration before experimenting with more advanced changes. A firewall or port change is not a universal solution; whether it helps depends on the server and network design.

Fixing a Java Edition server connection
Enter the address correctly
- Launch Java Edition and select Multiplayer.
- Choose the saved server entry, Direct Connection, or Add Server.
- Enter the server IP address or URL exactly as the owner supplied it. Preserve the port when the owner provided one.
- Connect and note the exact message if it fails. A wrong address, unavailable server, or blocked IP requires a different fix from a version mismatch.
Verify the server and version
- Ask the server owner whether the server is running and accepting players. A private server cannot accept a connection while it is stopped.
- Confirm that your Java release is one the server supports. Update the client if it is behind; do not switch to a snapshot merely because it is newer.
- If the server uses a required mod loader or mod set, use the configuration the owner specifies. A plain client may be refused by a server that requires a particular setup.
When the address is right but connection still fails
Test the local connection, then temporarily review security software and firewall rules that could block Java or Minecraft. Make only a targeted rule for the game or server; disabling protection globally is not a safe default. If DNS or port settings were customized, restore the network’s standard configuration and retry. Ask the owner to verify the server’s listening port and status rather than forwarding random ports on your router.
Joining a Bedrock friend’s world
Host checklist
- Update Minecraft on both devices to the latest compatible release.
- Sign in to the intended Microsoft accounts and confirm the players are friends in Minecraft.
- Open the world’s settings and enable multiplayer before starting it.
- Remain in the online world while the other player joins. Closing the world or going offline removes the join target.
Joining-player path
- Open Play.
- Open the Friends tab.
- Under Joinable Friends, select the host’s world.
If the world is not listed, both players should check that they are online, mutually added as Microsoft-account friends, and using compatible versions. Review multiplayer permissions as well. For a child account, the adult family-account owner must allow multiplayer; the child cannot override that restriction. On a console, verify the platform’s required online subscription before troubleshooting the world itself.

Making a Bedrock LAN world appear
LAN discovery is local, not internet matchmaking. Minecraft Help requires the latest version, LAN-capable devices, and the same network connection for every player.
Rank #2
- Explore randomly-generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armour to fend off the dangerous mobs
Host setup
- Connect all devices to the same home network. Avoid guest Wi-Fi, client-isolated access points, and separate VLANs.
- Open the world’s edit screen and select the Multiplayer tab.
- Enable Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players.
- Start the world and keep the host device connected.
Joining setup
- Open Play > Worlds.
- Look for the world marked as a LAN game.
- Select it after confirming that the host is still in the world.
If the LAN label never appears, first verify the network name, router isolation settings, and whether both devices received addresses from the same local network. Changing DNS or forwarding internet ports will not make two devices on isolated networks share LAN discovery. Also confirm that each device supports LAN play and runs the same current release.
Fixing sign-in and authentication failures
Signing out and back in can reset a stale connection to Minecraft’s authentication services. Use the path for your platform:
- Minecraft Launcher: open the gamertag menu, choose the log-out option, then select Microsoft Login and authenticate again.
- Xbox: open Profile & System, sign out, and sign back in.
- PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile: open Settings > Account > Sign out of your Microsoft Account. Sign in again using the code shown at aka.ms/remoteconnect.
After signing in, restart Minecraft and retry the same world. If the account is subject to family controls, have the adult account owner review multiplayer and cross-network permissions rather than repeatedly entering the sign-in code.

What Bedrock error names mean
Bedrock’s named errors point to the next check, but they do not replace the basic version, account, host, and network checks.
| Error | Meaning | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Breeze | The world being joined is newer than the player’s Minecraft version. | Update Minecraft on the joining device, and make sure the host is not using an incompatible preview or snapshot build. |
| Cauldron | Minecraft could not reach the authentication server, or the connection timed out. | Check sign-in, internet access, and Minecraft service status; sign out and back in if authentication appears stale. |
| Creeper | Minecraft could not connect to the world because of a network issue. | Test the network, confirm the host is online, and check whether security, DNS, or routing changes are interfering. |
| Kelp | The connection timed out. | Verify that the host or server is online, then retry after checking the local connection. |
| NetherNet | A multiplayer connection error. | Run the general multiplayer checks: compatible versions, permissions, host availability, account sign-in, and network. |
| Spyglass | A permissions issue. | Review account privacy and multiplayer permissions, including family-account controls. |
| Chain | The server or player uses a different Minecraft version. | Update to the latest compatible release on all participating sides. |
| Fox | The entered IP address is blocked. | Recheck the address and ask the server owner to confirm its status and access rules. |
| Goat | The target world is no longer available, often because the host left. | Ask the host to reopen the world and remain online while you join. |
Resolving Minecraft Realm connection errors
- Check that the Realm is active. If you own it, inspect its subscription state and close and reopen the Realm when it appears stuck.
- Confirm edition, version, and device support. Update the game and verify that the device is supported for the Realm’s edition.
- Verify online-play requirements. Console players need the relevant platform subscription, and account privacy settings must allow multiplayer.
- Reset authentication. Sign out of the Microsoft account, sign back in, and restart both the game and device.
- Retry after checking service status. A service outage can affect Realms even when your home network is working.
Unlike a friend-hosted world, the owner does not have to be online for an active Realm to be available. If the owner’s subscription has expired or the Realm is closed, repeated local retries will not restore access.
When to change network or firewall settings
Network changes belong at the end of troubleshooting, not the beginning. First establish that the game edition, release, account, host, and service are correct. Then:

- Restart the game, device, and home-network equipment to clear a temporary session or routing fault.
- Undo custom DNS entries and manually configured ports, because Minecraft Help warns that they can conflict with connections.
- Review firewall or security software logs for a specific blocked Minecraft or Java process. Create a narrow allow rule only when the evidence points there.
- For a private server, have the owner verify the server’s listening port and external reachability. A joining player cannot fix a stopped server by changing local ports.
- Do not disable all security controls or forward arbitrary ports. Those actions can expose a network without addressing an edition, permission, or service problem.
A fast decision tree
No world or server is visible
For a friend world, check that the host is online, multiplayer is enabled, both accounts are friends, and permissions allow joining. For LAN, check the same network and Visible to LAN Players. For a server, use the exact address instead of waiting for discovery.

The world is visible but joining fails
Update both sides, confirm the edition and build, then check sign-in and subscriptions. Use the named error table if Bedrock displays one.
Only one player cannot connect
Focus on that player’s account, device, local network, firewall, and version. If everyone fails simultaneously, check the host or Minecraft, PlayFab, and Xbox service status first.

The connection times out
Confirm that the host or server remains online, test the local connection, and remove custom DNS or port settings. A timeout does not by itself prove that opening a port will help.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Java Edition join a Bedrock world?
Not directly. The player and host must use the same edition, unless a separately configured server provides compatibility that its administrator explicitly supports.
Why can I see a friend but not their world?
The host may not have started an online world with multiplayer enabled, the accounts may not be mutual Microsoft-account friends, versions may differ, or your account permissions or console subscription may block multiplayer.
Why does my LAN world not show up?
Confirm both devices run the latest compatible version, support LAN play, use the same non-isolated network, and have Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players enabled on the host.
Does a Realm owner have to be online?
No. An active Realm can remain available while its owner is offline. The Realm subscription, supported device, current game version, account permissions, and any console online subscription still need to be valid.
Should I open ports to fix a Minecraft connection error?
Not automatically. Port changes depend on the server and network setup. First verify the address, server status, edition, version, permissions, sign-in, and normal DNS and port settings.
