Kelvin and Virginia do not normally respawn after they die. In a regular save, death removes the companion from that world. Your practical recovery choices are to spawn a replacement with the built-in Admin Panel, restore an older save, edit the save data, or use a compatible save editor. Back up the entire save before trying any method: a replacement can reset Virginia’s relationship, while save restoration can erase later building and exploration progress.
What happens when Kelvin or Virginia dies?
Kelvin and Virginia are persistent companions rather than ordinary enemies. If either is killed, sleeping, leaving the area, or progressing through the story does not bring that character back. Kevin Thielenhaus of Gameranx describes the consequence plainly: if one or both companions die, they are “gone from your save file permanently.” That describes normal gameplay; the recovery procedures below are community-documented workarounds, not an official Endnight support procedure.

Choose a method according to what you need to preserve. An Admin Panel spawn is usually the least disruptive to the world but creates a replacement entity. Restoring an older save preserves the companion exactly as it was at that point, at the cost of rolling back every other change made afterward. Direct file editing and third-party editors can target the dead-state data, but they are more sensitive to game updates and malformed entries.

Back up the correct save before changing anything
Do not edit the only copy of a save. Quit the game first, then copy the complete save folder to another location, such as a dated folder on your desktop or an external drive. Keeping the whole folder matters because a companion’s state can be split across more than one JSON file and because a partial backup may not be enough to recover from a failed edit.

Inside that directory, multiplayer work commonly uses separate folders named multiplayer and multiplayerclient. Work on the folder that belongs to the affected session; editing a different profile will not change the world you load. If Windows hides AppData, paste the path into File Explorer’s address bar or enable hidden items.
Record the save you are fixing
- Note whether the world is single-player, a hosted multiplayer game, or a dedicated-server save.
- Write down the save slot and the approximate date of the last known good save.
- Keep the original archive untouched until you have loaded the repaired world and confirmed the companion is present.
- Never edit JSON while the game or server is running; an autosave can overwrite your change or leave a half-written file.
Method 1: Spawn a replacement with the built-in Admin Panel
This is the shortest route for a local game when you mainly want a usable companion and can accept that Virginia’s relationship may return to its starting level. Gameranx documents the following sequence.

- Load the affected save and enter the game world.
- Type
cheatstickon the keyboard. The guide reports that no confirmation message appears, so the absence of a message is not proof that it failed. - Press
F1to open the Admin Panel. - Run
addcharacter robbyto spawn Kelvin. - Run
addcharacter virginiato spawn Virginia. - Save the game, leave it, and reload once to verify that the companion remains present.
robby is Kelvin’s internal character name for this command; it is not a typo. Enter only the command for the companion you need. Running it repeatedly can create additional copies, so make the backup before experimenting and use each command once.
What this method preserves—and what it does not
Because the command adds a character to the current world, it generally avoids the broad rollback caused by loading an older donor save. It does not guarantee that every previous inventory item, position, or relationship value is restored. In particular, Virginia’s friendship or relationship state may reset to its initial level. You may need to rebuild trust through normal interaction.
If the panel does not open
- Confirm that you typed
cheatstickwhile the save was loaded, not at the main menu. - Press
F1after entering the world; the panel is not a separate launcher window. - Check that the keyboard’s function-key mode is not intercepting
F1(some laptops requireFn+F1). - If a command has already been run, stop and reload your backup rather than issuing it repeatedly; duplicate companion entries can make later recovery harder.
Method 2: Restore an older save in which the companion is alive
Restoring a donor save is the most conservative option when you have a recent copy from before the death. The Steam Community procedure described for PC saves transfers the relevant savedata.json from a healthy save into the target save.

- Close Sons of the Forest completely.
- In the saves directory, identify a save from before Kelvin or Virginia died. Confirm its date and slot rather than guessing from the folder name.
- Copy the entire target save folder to a backup location.
- Open the donor save and copy its
savedata.json. - Paste that file into the target save folder, replacing the target’s copy only after the backup is secure.
- Start the game and load the target slot. Check the companion, then inspect important structures and inventory before continuing.
This transfers more than the companion’s life state. Everything represented in that donor file can move backward: building changes, collected items, opened areas, quests, and other world progress made after the donor save. If the rollback is unacceptable, restore your original backup and use the Admin Panel or a targeted editor instead.

Multiplayer cautions
Use the save belonging to the actual session. The commonly cited directory distinguishes multiplayer from multiplayerclient; confusing them can make an apparently successful edit affect the wrong copy. In a hosted game, coordinate with every player before replacing a file because their shared world will also roll back to the donor’s state.
Method 3: Change the dead-state fields manually
Some community guides describe changing companion flags in GameStateSaveData.json. Kelvin’s flag is identified as IsRobbyDead; Virginia’s is IsVirginiaDead. A dead companion is commonly represented with the value true. With the game closed and a backup made, a targeted edit changes the relevant value to false.
- Back up the complete save folder, not just one JSON file.
- Open the target save’s
GameStateSaveData.jsonin a plain-text editor that preserves JSON formatting. - Search for
IsRobbyDeadorIsVirginiaDead, depending on the companion. - Change only the matching boolean value from
truetofalse. - Save the file without changing its name or extension.
- Load the world and verify the result. If the game refuses to load, immediately restore the untouched backup.
File layouts can change between updates. If the field is absent, do not invent a replacement key, copy a similarly named field, or paste an example from another version. Restore the backup or use a save editor that explicitly supports your game build. A syntactically valid JSON file can still contain an invalid game state, so “the file saved successfully” is not the same as “the edit is safe.”
Why a flag edit may not be enough
A dead-state flag is only one part of an entity’s saved state. Position, health, relationship values, and the entity record may be stored elsewhere or regenerated differently after an update. If the companion does not appear after a flag change, do not keep adding guessed fields. Return to the backup and choose a donor save or a version-matched editor.

Method 4: Use a compatible save editor
Thunderstore lists SOTFEdit v0.10.2 as an open-source save-game editor with a Revive Virginia & Kelvin function. This is optional convenience software, not a guarantee that every current save format is supported.
- Close the game, and stop a dedicated server if the save is server-hosted.
- Make a complete copy of the save folder or server archive.
- Download the editor only from the project page listed by Thunderstore, and check that its supported version matches your game and save format.
- Open the backup or a duplicate working copy in the editor.
- Use the revive function for the required companion, save the edited copy, and replace the live save only after checking that the output is complete.
- Load the game and verify both the companion and the rest of the world.
Third-party tools can become outdated when Endnight changes field names or serialization. Do not run an editor against a live server, and keep the untouched archive until several successful loads confirm that the repair worked.

Dedicated servers add an operational step: the server must be stopped and its current save downloaded before any edit. A March 9, 2026 Supercraft guide describes a workflow that edits the server archive, uploads it, handles autosave files as the host requires, and then restarts the server. The exact filenames and fields are version-sensitive, so preserve the original archive even when following the same sequence.
For a hosted Sons of the Forest world, Godlike.Host offers game-server hosting with its own game panel, up to three free backups a day, and SFTP/FTP access. Its Sons of the Forest plans list 4, 12 and 20 slots; the server’s MaxPlayers setting allows 1 to 8 players (Steam Community server guide, 11 Oct 2026).
- Stop the server cleanly and wait until the host reports that it has shut down.
- Download a copy of the current save archive. Label it with the date and keep it offline as your rollback point.
- Extract a working copy and inspect
GameStateSaveData.json. The procedure identifiesIsRobbyDead: trueandIsVirginiaDead: trueas the dead-state fields. - Where the host’s format requires it, inspect
SaveData.jsonas well. Restore the companion’s entity state and health rather than changing unrelated records. - If editing entity records, the guide identifies companion type IDs 9 for Kelvin and 10 for Virginia. Treat those IDs as version-sensitive and verify them against the tool or procedure used for your server build.
- Check for duplicate companion entries before saving. Duplicate records can cause corrupted spawns or prevent the server from starting.
- Repack and upload the edited archive, following the host’s instructions for removing, replacing, or retaining autosave files.
- Restart the server, join the world, and confirm the companion’s presence before allowing normal play to continue.
Because this is a third-party 2026 procedure rather than official Endnight documentation, do not assume that a field shown in one server version exists in another. If the server fails to start, stop it, restore the original archive, and remove the edited copy from the live directory before troubleshooting further.
Which recovery method should you choose?

For most local players, try the Admin Panel after making a backup. Choose a donor save when preserving the companion exactly is more important than keeping progress made after its death. Use manual edits or an editor only when you understand the save format and have a tested rollback copy.
Troubleshooting after a revival attempt
A second Kelvin or Virginia appears
Do not issue the spawn command again. Multiple entity records can produce duplicate companions or unstable saves. Exit without further saving, restore the backup, and retry with one command or a clean donor save.
The companion is present but Virginia no longer trusts you
A replacement spawn can reset Virginia’s relationship to its starting level. This is expected for that method; rebuild the relationship through normal gameplay rather than editing unrelated values.
The world lost buildings or items
You loaded or transferred a donor save. Revert to the pre-edit backup if the rollback is unacceptable, then use a replacement spawn or a targeted, version-matched tool.
The JSON field cannot be found
Do not create a new key based on a guide for another release. Save layouts vary; restore the backup and use a donor save or an editor that names support for your current version.
The dedicated server will not start
Stop retrying the edited archive. Restore the original server backup, check for duplicate companion entries and incorrectly repacked files, then restart from the known-good archive. Only test another edit on a separate copy.
