Then place the powder block in the world so it touches a full water block or flowing water. The crafting step makes powder—not finished concrete—and rain, water bottles, or dropping powder into water as an item will not convert it.
What you need to make concrete
- Four sand blocks
- Four gravel blocks
- One dye in the color you want
The dye determines the powder’s color, and Minecraft describes 16 color possibilities. The same color carries through to the finished concrete. The recipe produces concrete powder; water is needed for the next step. Minecraft’s concrete powder guide lists the recipe and conversion behavior.

How to craft concrete powder
- Choose a dye. Pick the color you want your concrete to be.
- Open the crafting interface or recipe book. Find the concrete powder recipe. The recipe book can show the supplies needed; Minecraft’s crafting guide explains how to use it.
- Craft the powder. Use four sand, four gravel, and one dye. The result is concrete powder, not concrete.
If the recipe is not immediately visible, check the recipe book for the required materials and follow its instructions. The source recipe information establishes the quantities, but not a specific crafting-grid arrangement, so there is no need to rely on a particular placement pattern.
How to turn powder into concrete
- Place the powder as a block. Put it in the world where it can contact water. Do not throw the powder item into water; it must be placed first.
- Bring it into contact with water. A full water block or flowing water converts the placed powder block into concrete.
- Collect or build with the concrete. Repeat with additional powder blocks for a larger build.
Minecraft’s concrete powder guide specifies that water bottles and rain do not trigger conversion. A prior Minecraft concrete article also describes concrete as forming from concrete powder exposed to water.

Keep falling powder under control
Concrete powder is affected by gravity. If there is no block beneath it, it falls, so place it where it will land against the intended water source rather than expecting it to stay suspended. For bigger builds, make batches and plan how the placed blocks will contact water; the exact arrangement depends on the build.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting the recipe to make concrete: crafting makes powder; water changes the placed block into concrete.
- Dropping powder into water as an item: place the block in the world first.
- Using rain or a water bottle: neither converts the powder; use a full water block or flowing water.
- Placing powder without support: it falls under gravity if nothing is beneath it.
Edition and feature notes
The cited Minecraft instructions establish the basic recipe and water behavior, but do not provide a Java-versus-Bedrock comparison or a version-by-version breakdown. A 2026 Minecraft snapshot announcement described concrete stairs and slabs as snapshot features; that announcement alone does not establish that they are generally released or available in every edition. This guide therefore covers the established powder-to-block process rather than treating those snapshot features as standard recipes. See the snapshot announcement for its stated context.
