Tick’s single-trip overseas Standard policy offers unlimited overseas medical expenses, but its cancellation, baggage and disruption benefits have fixed limits and conditions. This review covers the single-trip overseas policy—not Tick’s domestic or cruise policies, which have different benefits and wording. The current single-trip Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) is dated 1 April 2026; for an existing policy, use the PDS and schedule issued for its purchase date.
What Tick Standard covers at a glance
Tick Travel Insurance is issued, distributed and administered by Europ Assistance Australia Pty Ltd, trading as Tick Travel Insurance. Its single-trip PDS offers Basic, Budget, Standard and Top levels; eligibility, destinations, trip duration, benefits and limits vary by level.

These are limits stated by Tick in its current product summary and PDS, not independent evidence of claim acceptance, value or customer satisfaction. Tick’s summary directs customers to the PDS for exclusions, sub-limits and conditions.

Does Tick Standard cover COVID-19?
The current summary lists unlimited overseas medical expenses for COVID-19 and a separate $2,500 limit for COVID-19 cancellation or trip disruption for Standard and Top. For cancellation or amendment, the PDS requires a medical diagnosis after buying the policy and that the change be necessary and unavoidable.

This is not blanket pandemic protection. The PDS excludes, among other things, government travel bans, “Do not travel” warnings, border closures, mandatory quarantine that does not result from the traveller’s diagnosis, testing costs and costs incurred after returning to Australia. Check the precise wording for the event affecting your trip.
What does Standard cover for cancellation and trip interruption?
Tick lists $5,000 for cancellation and $5,000 for cutting a trip short. Those separate limits do not mean every prepaid cost or disruption is covered: a claim must meet the relevant policy definition, conditions and exclusions.

Transport incidents illustrate why the type of expense matters. CHOICE’s review says Standard excludes cancellation expenses for mechanical breakdowns and transport accidents, while including additional expenses for transport accidents and mechanical breakdowns. The distinction is between claiming cancellation costs and claiming additional expenses; “transport incidents are covered” would be too broad. Consult the applicable PDS for the specific event and expense.

The listed total limit for personal belongings and baggage is $4,000. Tick also applies item sub-limits and conditions, so the headline amount should not be treated as the payout for a particular item. Check the PDS limits for the belongings you plan to take and the rules for loss, damage or theft.

Are natural disasters and winter sports included?
Natural disasters
Unexpected natural-disaster cover requires the Natural disaster option to be purchased and shown on the policy schedule. Under the PDS, events known when the option is purchased are not covered by this optional benefit as described. Confirm that the option appears on your schedule before relying on it.
Winter sports
Winter sports require the relevant upgrade and are subject to the PDS definitions. Do not assume that a Standard policy alone covers every snow-sport activity.

What excess and exclusions should I check before buying?
The excess
The current single-trip PDS lists a $200 Standard excess. It is applied according to the policy section, person and event, so check the PDS rather than assuming there is one universal deduction for every claim.

CHOICE reports that the policy excludes pandemics other than COVID-19 and identifies distinctions relating to civil unrest and terrorism. Those descriptions should not be expanded into a general rule for every scenario; confirm the current PDS wording for the event in question.

Rental-car excess
Standard lists a $2,000 rental-car excess benefit. The PDS says it covers only the excess component under the rental agreement and does not replace rental-vehicle insurance. Rental-agreement compliance and authorized-driver conditions apply.
Who is eligible, and which destinations qualify?
The PDS varies age limits, maximum trip duration and geography by plan. Standard lists worldwide travel including the USA, but maximum trip durations change with traveller age and destination. Tick’s destination definitions and the full eligibility table should be checked against your own itinerary; the policy schedule and applicable PDS determine the cover for an individual purchase.
How to assess whether Standard fits your trip
- Check the cancellation and trip-interruption limits against the non-refundable costs you could lose.
- Review baggage item sub-limits for the belongings you intend to take.
- Confirm age, destination and trip-duration eligibility for every traveller.
- Check how the PDS treats pre-existing medical conditions and the disruption events relevant to your itinerary.
- Add any required options, including natural-disaster or winter-sports cover, and verify them on the policy schedule.
- When comparing policies, use the same travellers, destinations, dates and upgrades; compare PDS terms and total price, not just the medical headline. Tick lists unlimited medical cover at more than one tier, so that figure alone does not distinguish the plans.
Which policy wording applies?
Tick’s PDS dated 1 April 2026 says: “This document contains the full terms and conditions that apply to your policy.” Tick’s policy-document index says the applicable PDS depends on when the policy was purchased. Read the version attached to your account and your policy schedule if you already hold cover.
