What you can craft
Minecraft’s boat family has three practical recipe outcomes:

- Bamboo raft: the bamboo equivalent of a boat, crafted with the same U-shaped pattern.
- Chest boat: a boat upgraded with one chest for transportable storage.
Boat wood changes the appearance of the finished item. The available guides describe the normal boats as functionally identical, so choose the wood style that matches your build rather than expecting a speed, capacity or handling bonus from a particular species.
How to craft a standard boat
Materials and workstation
You need five planks made from one wood type and a crafting table. The recipe is a 3×3 crafting-table pattern; it is not a shapeless recipe.

- Open a crafting table.
- Place one plank in the left slot of the middle row.
- Leave the middle slot of that row empty.
- Place one plank in the right slot of the middle row.
- Fill all three slots of the bottom row with planks.
- Take the boat from the output slot.
Visually, the arrangement is:

[plank] [plank] [plank]The top row remains empty. All five planks must be the same wood type. Oak and spruce, for example, cannot be mixed in one recipe; a mixed pattern leaves the output slot empty.
The shovel question
The current Java Edition recipe uses planks only. A wooden shovel was added to the boat recipe during the 1.9 development cycle, in snapshot 15w41a, and the original plank-only recipe was later restored. The exact release in which the shovel was removed is not established here, so an old screenshot or tutorial may show a recipe that no longer applies.

If the five-plank pattern produces no boat in your Bedrock installation, check the recipe book for that edition and version rather than assuming the Java recipe applies unchanged. Do not treat the unverified Bedrock report as a universal rule for every Bedrock release.

Standard wood boats
Each of the following wood families has a matching boat. The recipe pattern is the same for all of them; only the plank material changes.

“Same function” means the wood choice is cosmetic rather than a different vehicle class. A dark oak boat does not gain extra storage, and a cherry boat does not use a different pattern.
Bamboo raft
Bamboo planks do not produce a bamboo boat item. Use the same U-shaped arrangement with bamboo planks and the result is a bamboo raft. Guides describe the raft as behaving like a boat, while preserving bamboo’s distinct appearance and item name.
If you are following a build palette that uses bamboo, look for the raft output rather than treating the absence of a boat-shaped name as a failed recipe. Conversely, substituting bamboo into a recipe while expecting an oak, spruce or other conventional boat will not give that wood’s boat variant.
How to craft a chest boat
What the recipe accepts
A chest boat is made by combining any boat with any single chest. The recipe is shapeless, so the two ingredients can occupy any positions in the crafting grid. The output retains the wood type of the boat you supplied.

- Craft or obtain one chest.
- Open a crafting table.
- Place the boat and chest anywhere in the grid; their positions do not matter.
- Take the resulting chest boat from the output slot.
Because the boat determines the appearance, putting a chest beside a spruce boat produces a spruce chest boat, while putting the same chest beside a cherry boat produces a cherry chest boat.
Crafting the chest correctly
A normal chest requires eight planks surrounding an empty centre slot:

[plank] [plank] [plank]A seven-plank chest recipe is incorrect. If no chest appears, check that all eight outside positions are filled and that the centre is empty. The chest’s plank species does not change the chest boat’s exterior; the boat ingredient supplies that visual style.
What a chest boat changes
The upgrade adds transportable storage without turning the item into a larger passenger craft. A chest boat provides 27 extra inventory slots and still seats one entity. The standard boat has no inventory, so the chest boat is the choice when you need to move cargo and a rider in the same water vehicle.

The recipe is one-way in the crafting system: there is no recipe that splits a chest boat back into a separate boat and chest. Plan the conversion around the job you are about to do, especially if you may later want an ordinary boat and a standalone chest.

The practical decision is simple: use a normal boat for passenger transport when you do not need a cargo inventory, and make a chest boat when the 27-slot hold matters more than retaining a separate chest for another use.

The output slot is empty
- Check the material: all five standard-boat planks must come from one wood type. Remove any mixed oak, spruce, birch or other planks.
- Check the shape: the middle row has planks on the left and right, its centre is empty, and the entire bottom row is filled. The top row is empty.
- Check the edition: the plank-only instructions describe current Java Edition. Bedrock guides disagree about whether a wooden shovel is still required, so consult the in-game recipe book for the exact Bedrock version you are running.
- Check whether you used bamboo: bamboo produces a raft, not a conventional boat name.
You expected a boat but received a raft
This is the expected bamboo result. Bamboo follows the U-shaped recipe but uses the raft item name. If you specifically need a named wood boat, replace the bamboo planks with five matching planks from one of the standard boat wood families.
The chest boat recipe does not appear
- Make sure both ingredients are present: one boat and one chest.
- Move the ingredients around the grid; because the recipe is shapeless, position should not matter.
- Verify that the second item is a complete chest, not seven planks or a partially filled chest pattern.
- Confirm that you are using a boat item rather than a different object made from a similar material. The output keeps the wood style of the boat ingredient.
You want the chest back out
Do not craft the chest boat if you expect to recover the components later. The documented crafting system has no reverse recipe, so make a separate chest when you need one for a fixed storage location.

Version and edition cautions
Java recipe history
The shovel requirement is historical rather than part of the current Java recipe described here. Snapshot 15w41a, during the 1.9 boat overhaul, included a wooden shovel; later Java development restored the five-plank arrangement. Tutorials copied from that period can therefore conflict with current recipe-book behavior.

Evidence about the Bedrock shovel requirement is inconsistent. One guide says Bedrock still uses a wooden shovel, but that statement was not confirmed with a Bedrock-specific source. Treat the edition and game version shown in your own recipe book as authoritative for your installation. The Java rule should not be presented as a guaranteed Bedrock rule.
When chest boats were introduced
Published guides disagree about the chest boat’s release version: one places it in version 1.9 and another in 1.19. That conflict is unresolved, so no single arrival version should be treated as established. If an older world or server does not recognize the recipe, check the game version and its enabled content before diagnosing the crafting layout.
A practical selection guide
Choose a standard boat when
- You need only a passenger vehicle.
- You want the least expensive recipe: five matching planks.
- You may want to keep a chest as a separate block or item.
- You are matching a build and want one of the nine conventional wood appearances.
Choose a chest boat when
- You need 27 inventory slots while traveling by water.
- You want to carry cargo and one entity in the same vehicle.
- You accept the additional chest cost and the fact that crafting cannot split the result later.
Choose a bamboo raft when
- You want bamboo’s appearance.
- You understand that the output is a raft item rather than one of the standard wood boat names.
- You want the boat-like behavior associated with the bamboo variant.

Bottom line
For current Java Edition, five matching planks in the U-shaped crafting-table pattern make a boat, and no shovel is needed. Bamboo follows the pattern but yields a raft. Add one chest to any boat in a shapeless recipe when you need 27 slots of storage; the finished chest boat keeps the boat’s wood style, seats one entity and cannot be crafted back into its original parts.
