Choose Bedrock if you want to play with friends on consoles or mobile, or value controller and touch support. Choose Java if you play on PC and care most about community mods and Java servers. If you’re buying on a Windows PC, check the Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC bundle—and your account’s library—before paying: the PC product includes both editions. The two editions still use separate multiplayer ecosystems, so owning both lets you join either group, not play across editions in the same world.

Choose Bedrock if your group plays on different kinds of devices
Bedrock is the more practical fit when friends play on supported consoles, phones or tablets, and Windows PCs. Its cross-platform play is designed for players on supported Bedrock platforms, and it includes controller and touch support. Check the current support or store page for a specific console model: supported platform lists and terms can change.

Choose Java if you want PC mods and Java servers
Java is the fit for a primarily PC-based group that wants community mods or Java server communities. Java cross-play covers Windows, macOS, and Linux players using Java; it does not make Java players compatible with Bedrock players.

Choose based on the group, not a broad “better” claim
If you mostly play alone, consider which content and controls you prefer. If multiplayer is important, ask friends which edition they use and what platform they play on before buying. The edition determines which multiplayer ecosystem you can join.
Can you play Minecraft cross-platform?
Yes, within an edition’s supported platform ecosystem: Java players on Windows, macOS, and Linux can play together, while Bedrock players can play across supported Windows, console, and mobile platforms. A Java player cannot simply join a Bedrock game or Realm. Everyone needs to use the matching edition for that session.

Console multiplayer may also require the platform’s online subscription. Minecraft Help lists Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online for the relevant console, as well as matching game versions, account sign-in, an internet connection, and appropriate child-account permissions. Requirements and subscription terms can vary by platform and country; check the current Minecraft multiplayer requirements and your console’s terms.

For Windows PC, Minecraft lists a combined Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC product. Minecraft Help says the bundle launched June 7, 2022. If you already bought the game, sign into the Launcher or Microsoft Store with the account used for that purchase and check whether the editions appear as owned before buying again. Minecraft offers Java and Bedrock Realms separately. A Realm is therefore not a way to bridge the edition divide: players still need the matching edition to join. Realms are optional; you can choose another multiplayer approach if it suits your group.
