A fake Ledger ad can drain a wallet without breaking the hardware device: in an August 2026 campaign, a phishing site imitated Ledger and persuaded users to enter their secret recovery phrases. Once a phrase is exposed, someone else can restore the wallet in compatible software and move its assets without the original Ledger device. A sponsored label, familiar platform names in the link chain, and a realistic-looking page do not prove that a destination is operated by Ledger.
How the fake Ledger ad scam worked
Zscaler ThreatLabz analyzed the campaign in August 2026 and published its findings on September 25, 2026. The sponsored ads appeared for Ledger-related searches and targeted users in the United States, Europe, and parts of Asia. ThreatLabz did not report a specific victim count or total loss for this Ledger campaign.
The observed route was Google ad → Google Cloud Storage URL → Vercel-hosted redirect → Google Sites page displaying a phishing page in an iframe. Separate Vercel-hosted domains served the phishing content. During the researchers’ observation, the redirect domain appeared to change every 15–20 minutes; that was a time-bounded observation, not a guaranteed interval for every visitor or a general property of Vercel. Zscaler ThreatLabz’s campaign analysis
ThreatLabz said the advertiser profile was Google-verified and long-standing, with no observed history of malicious ads. The researchers suggested the account may have been compromised, but did not confirm that. Verification of an advertiser profile is not proof that a linked page or download is Ledger’s.

What the phishing page asked users to do
The page resembled Ledger’s interface, showed apparent desktop and mobile downloads, collected device metadata, and monitored interactions. After a visitor selected a device, it displayed fake connection or firmware messages and asked the user to confirm device ownership. It then requested the secret recovery phrase, including BIP-39 word suggestions.
ThreatLabz observed a submitted phrase being sent to an attacker-controlled Vercel endpoint. The page then showed an “Invalid seed” error and prompted the user to enter the phrase again; the second submission was also sent. The prompt was the key theft mechanism: the report does not describe the physical Ledger device being remotely defeated.

Why a recovery phrase puts the wallet at risk
A recovery phrase can restore its associated wallet in compatible software. Anyone who obtains it may be able to access the derived accounts and transfer assets without possessing the original hardware wallet. Keeping the device physically safe therefore does not protect a phrase voluntarily typed into a fake website or computer.

How to spot a suspicious Ledger result or prompt
- Check the destination, not just the ad label. Sponsored placement and familiar names such as Google Cloud Storage, Vercel, or Google Sites in a redirect chain do not establish that the final page is Ledger’s official site.
- Inspect the domain carefully. Ledger warns about deceptive domains and lookalike spellings. Reach the official destination independently rather than trusting a search ad or a link in a message.
- Treat phrase-entry requests as a stop sign. Do not type a recovery phrase into a website, computer, or app in response to an ad, error, update notice, setup flow, or verification prompt.
- Distinguish a download from a secret request. Ledger says to download its official Ledger Wallet application directly from its website. A page that asks for the phrase is not made safe by looking like a setup or verification screen.
- Reject uninitiated device transactions. If a transaction appears on the Ledger device and you did not create it, reject it. A real hardware confirmation screen does not make an unexpected transaction trustworthy.
What to do if you entered your recovery phrase
Assume the phrase is compromised and act promptly using trusted wallet-security guidance. Because the phrase can be used to restore the wallet and move assets, do not rely on the original device alone to protect it. Jamaica CIRT separately described a broader crypto-ad campaign impersonating several services, including Ledger, that involved fake seed-phrase interfaces, malicious transaction approvals, and deceptive browser extensions. Its reported confirmed losses of more than $1.2 million apply to that wider campaign, not the specific Ledger campaign analyzed by Zscaler. Jamaica CIRT’s broader campaign report
