To change the listener, stop the server, edit server.properties, set server-port (and, if needed, server-portv6), restart, then align the host firewall, router or cloud firewall, and every player’s client with the new value. If enable-lan-visibility=true, Bedrock can continue binding to 19132 and 19133 for LAN discovery even when custom ports are configured.

server-port |
IPv4 listening port | 19132 | Integer from 1 through 65,535 |
server-portv6 |
IPv6 listening port | 19133 | Use a separate, non-conflicting port |
For a normal Internet or home-network setup, players therefore enter your server address with port 19132 unless you have deliberately changed it. IPv6-capable deployments use the value assigned to server-portv6, normally 19133.
Microsoft describes server-port as the IPv4 port on which the server should listen and permits values from 1 to 65,535. Ports below 1024 are commonly reserved for well-known system services, so a Bedrock administrator normally chooses an unoccupied higher port. The number itself does not improve game performance: the cited Microsoft material publishes no benchmark showing a speed or latency advantage for one Bedrock port over another.

How Bedrock port settings work
server.properties is the source of the configured port
The Bedrock server reads its settings from the server.properties file in the server directory. The two relevant lines are:
server-port=19132
server-portv6=19133
Changing a value changes where a newly started server attempts to listen. It does not move an already running process. A clean stop and restart is required before the new binding takes effect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Changing only server-port changes the IPv4 listener. It does not change server-portv6. If your host accepts IPv6 connections, set both values intentionally and open both through the relevant firewall layers. They can be consecutive numbers, such as 19140 and 19141, but they do not have to be.
The network path has several independent port controls
A successful connection requires the same intended port at every stage:
- The Bedrock process must bind to that port.
- The operating-system firewall must allow it.
- A home router or cloud firewall must forward or permit it when players connect from the Internet.
- The Bedrock client must be given the server address and that port.
A change at only one layer creates a failure that can look like a server problem even though the server is running normally.

Transport protocol needs build-specific confirmation
The quoted Microsoft properties pages identify the listening-port values but do not specify a transport protocol in those passages. Documentation for the itzg Bedrock container describes the default IPv4 and IPv6 listeners as UDP 19132 and UDP 19133. Confirm the protocol required by your exact Bedrock server build and hosting environment before creating a firewall rule; do not assume that a rule for a different protocol is sufficient.

- Stop the server cleanly. Use the normal stop procedure for your operating system or service manager. Do not edit a live file while the process is still running and then assume it has reloaded the setting.
- Open the correct properties file. In the Bedrock Dedicated Server directory, open
server.propertieswith a plain-text editor. - Set the IPv4 port. Replace the existing value, for example:
server-port=19140 - Set the IPv6 port if you use IPv6. For example:
server-portv6=19141If IPv6 is not part of your deployment, leave its configuration consistent with your intended setup rather than changing it accidentally.
- Save the file as plain text. Keep the property names, equals signs, and numeric values exactly as shown. Do not add spaces or quotation marks around the number.
- Restart the server. The process must start again before it can bind the new port.
- Open the host firewall. Allow the configured IPv4 and IPv6 ports. Microsoft’s Ubuntu example uses
sudo ufw allow 19132andsudo ufw allow 19133; substitute your chosen values, such assudo ufw allow 19140andsudo ufw allow 19141, and apply the protocol required by your server environment. - Update Internet forwarding. If players connect from outside your LAN, change the router port-forwarding rule or cloud security-group rule to the same external port and protocol used by the deployment. A changed local listener with an unchanged external rule will still direct players to the old port.
- Update the client entry. In Minecraft Bedrock, add or edit the server and enter its address plus the new port. Players must use the externally reachable address when they are outside your network and the LAN address when they are inside it.
Firewall, router, and cloud configuration
Host firewall
The firewall on the machine running Bedrock is independent of the server property. Microsoft’s getting-started guidance states that, when a firewall is enabled, the ports configured as server-port and server-portv6 must be allowed through it. If you change 19132 to 19140, an allow rule for 19132 does not automatically follow the change.
For Ubuntu using UFW, Microsoft shows these default-port examples:
sudo ufw allow 19132
sudo ufw allow 19133
Replace the numbers with the values in your file. Because the official properties text does not state the protocol in the cited passage, verify whether your build and host require UDP-specific rules before adding a protocol-qualified command.
Home-router port forwarding
Port forwarding has an inside destination and an outside (public) port. The destination must be the private IP address of the Bedrock host and the internal port on which the server listens. If you choose to expose a different external port, the client must use that external number, while the forwarding rule maps it to the host’s internal listener. Keep the mapping and protocol consistent; opening a port on the server alone does not create a path through the router.

Cloud firewalls and security groups
A virtual machine can have both an operating-system firewall and a provider-level firewall or security group. Permit the selected IPv4 and IPv6 values in every layer that filters inbound traffic. If the provider assigns separate IPv4 and IPv6 rules, configure each independently and do not assume an IPv4 allow rule covers IPv6.
Connecting from the Bedrock client
In the Bedrock edition client, open the servers list, choose the option to add a server, enter a recognizable name, type the reachable server address, and enter the configured port. The address depends on the network location:
- Same home or office network: use the server host’s LAN address and the LAN-reachable port.
- Outside the network: use the public address and the router’s external port or the cloud instance’s exposed port.
- IPv6 connection: use the host’s reachable IPv6 address and the value of
server-portv6.
Do not omit the custom port. A client entry that still contains 19132 will continue trying the default even after the server has been moved to 19140.
Why friends cannot connect after a port change
The server is still listening on 19132
This usually means the wrong server.properties was edited, the server was not restarted, or the file contains a formatting error. Stop the process, verify the file in the actual server directory, confirm the numeric values, and start the server again. Check the startup output or the host’s listening-socket view to confirm the active binding rather than relying on the file alone.
The firewall still allows only the old port
Changing the property does not modify UFW, a Windows firewall rule, a hosting control panel, or a cloud security group. Add the new value and remove the old rule only after you have confirmed that no other service still needs it. If both IPv4 and IPv6 are enabled, check each corresponding rule.

The router forwards 19132 while the server uses 19140
Friends outside your LAN reach the public forwarding rule, not the private configuration file. Update the external rule and tell players the external port. If you intentionally keep the public port at 19132 while forwarding it to an internal 19140 listener, players still enter 19132; the important requirement is that the router’s inside destination matches the server and the client matches the router’s outside port.
LAN visibility has retained the default bindings
Microsoft’s experimental properties reference documents an exception: when enable-lan-visibility=true, the server can bind to default ports 19132 and 19133 even when server-port and server-portv6 contain non-default values. This can make it appear that the custom port was ignored and can cause a conflict when another instance is using the defaults. Review this setting when default-port bindings persist; disabling LAN visibility can be appropriate for a deployment that does not need automatic LAN discovery.
Two server instances are competing for one binding
Each concurrently running Bedrock instance needs a non-conflicting listener. Assign distinct IPv4 ports and, when applicable, distinct IPv6 ports to the instances. Also give each instance its own firewall and forwarding rules. A second process cannot reliably share the same address-and-port binding merely because it has a different world or name.
The client is using the wrong address family
An IPv4 address uses server-port; an IPv6 address uses server-portv6. If only one family was opened, test with an address in the family that is configured. A working IPv4 path does not prove that IPv6 forwarding or firewall access is present.
A stale client entry is hiding the change
Edit the saved server entry instead of joining an old favorite that still contains 19132. Have one player create a fresh entry with the exact address and port. This separates a client-side typo from a server-side listener problem.

The selected number is already occupied
Another application or Bedrock instance may already use the chosen port. Pick an unused value in the allowed 1–65,535 range, then update every dependent rule. Avoid ports below 1024 unless you understand the operating system’s privilege and service implications, because Microsoft notes that those ports are usually reserved for well-known applications.

Choosing a port for one server or several
| Situation | Practical choice | What must be synchronized |
|---|---|---|
| One server, simple LAN or Internet setup | Keep IPv4 19132 and IPv6 19133 | Firewall, forwarding, and client entries use the defaults |
| One server conflicts with another service | Choose unused custom values, such as 19140 and 19141 | Properties, host firewall, router or cloud rules, and client entries |
| Several servers on one host | Give every instance unique IPv4 and IPv6 bindings | Separate process configuration and separate network rules per instance |
| LAN discovery is not needed | Consider disabling enable-lan-visibility when default bindings cause conflicts |
Players connect directly with the configured address and port |
| IPv4-only deployment | Configure and expose server-port; do not advertise an IPv6 path |
IPv4 firewall, forwarding, and client address |
Keeping the defaults minimizes administration because Microsoft’s setup guide calls 19132 the default Dedicated Server port. Custom values are useful for avoiding collisions or organizing multiple instances, but they add synchronization work rather than delivering a documented performance benefit.
Safe change checklist
- Record the old values before editing.
- Stop the correct Bedrock process and confirm it has exited.
- Change
server-portfor IPv4 andserver-portv6for IPv6 when required. - Confirm each number is an integer from 1 through 65,535 and is not already occupied.
- Restart and verify the active listening bindings.
- Allow the same values through the host firewall, using the protocol required by your build.
- Update router or cloud forwarding for Internet access.
- Test from the LAN and, separately, from an external network when both paths matter.
- Give players the correct address family and port instead of the old saved entry.
- Inspect
enable-lan-visibilityif 19132 or 19133 remains bound unexpectedly.
What the port number does—and does not—change
The port identifies the network endpoint at which Bedrock accepts connections. Changing it does not move the world, alter player limits, migrate saved data, or change the server software version. It only changes the endpoint that must be reachable. Consequently, a port change should be planned as a coordinated network change: the server configuration, filtering rules, forwarding, and client details form one chain.
There is no published Microsoft statistic demonstrating that a custom Bedrock port is faster, safer, or more stable than 19132. Choose the default for simplicity, or choose another unused value to resolve a real collision or fit an existing network design.

| Symptom | Most likely check |
|---|---|
| Local players connect, remote friends cannot | Public address, router or cloud forwarding, and Internet-facing firewall rule |
| No one connects after editing the file | Correct file, clean restart, valid number, and whether another process owns the port |
| Players connect only with 19132 | Client entry, forwarding rule, and enable-lan-visibility default bindings |
| IPv4 works but IPv6 fails | server-portv6, IPv6 firewall rule, and IPv6 reachability |
| A second server will not start | Duplicate IPv4 or IPv6 binding and any LAN-visibility default listener |
