The armadillo is a passive mob introduced with the Armored Paws update. Its main gameplay loop is straightforward: locate one in the right biome, keep it calm, collect scutes, and use those scutes for protection for a tamed adult wolf. It is not a combat pet and it does not become owned or obedient when fed.
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20.5 notes also introduced eight biome-associated wolf variants in the same update. Those variants are separate from armadillo behavior, but they make Wolf Armor a more visible reason to seek out scutes. The armadillo itself remains a passive source of the crafting material.

Where armadillos spawn
Savanna and Badlands are the target biomes
In both Java Edition 1.20.5 and Bedrock Edition 1.20.80, armadillos spawn in Savanna and Badlands biomes. These are the biome names used in Mojang’s Armored Paws release documentation. If you are searching elsewhere, changing tactics will not help; move your expedition toward one of those two biome families.
Because armadillos are passive, the challenge is finding suitable terrain rather than defeating a guard mob. Search open areas of the biome and watch for a small, brown, shelled animal among other passive wildlife. Bring the items you intend to use before you approach: Spider Eyes for attraction or breeding and a brush for scute collection.
A simple search plan
- Travel until the biome display identifies a Savanna or Badlands area.
- Slow down near open ground and scan valleys, plateaus and flat ledges rather than sprinting through the area.
- Approach without creating a threat response; sprinting can make an armadillo roll up.
- Once you locate one, establish a safe working area before feeding or brushing it.
The release notes do not promise a particular population size, spawn frequency or guaranteed number of armadillos per biome. Treat the biome names as the reliable locator and allow time to search.
Can you tame an armadillo?
Attraction and taming are different mechanics
No. The cited official notes do not describe armadillos as tameable pets. An armadillo does not gain an owner, follow a personal command set or become a household animal in the way a tamed wolf does. Calling the process “taming” can therefore lead to the wrong expectation.
Spider Eyes are the armadillo’s favorite food. Holding Spider Eyes makes an armadillo interested in you and lets you guide it toward a chosen location. This is attraction, not ownership. If you leave the area, the armadillo does not become a player-bound companion.
Breeding two adults
- Bring two adult armadillos close together while holding Spider Eyes.
- Feed Spider Eyes to each adult. Feeding both adults starts the breeding process and produces a baby.
- Keep the area calm while the adults and baby settle. Threat detection can make an armadillo roll up, preventing it from eating until it is safe.
Spider Eyes can also be fed to a baby armadillo to accelerate its growth. This is the documented food interaction; there is no separate taming item or ownership screen.

Why armadillos roll up
Threats that trigger the shell response
An armadillo rolls into its shell when it detects specific dangers. Mojang lists these triggers:
- A player who is sprinting nearby.
- A player riding or using a vehicle.
- Undead mobs.
- A mob or player that has recently attacked the armadillo.
The response is defensive rather than aggressive. While rolled up, the armadillo cannot walk or eat, and its shell reduces incoming damage. It continues scanning for threats instead of immediately returning to normal.
Situations in which it does not roll
The release notes also identify exceptions. An armadillo does not roll while it is fleeing, in water, in the air or attached to a lead. A lead is therefore useful when you need to move one without repeatedly provoking the shell response, although you still need to avoid the other listed dangers once it is on the ground.
How long the roll lasts
The armadillo unrolls after roughly four seconds when it detects no continuing threat. The timing is approximate, not a guaranteed stopwatch interval. If it remains curled longer, look for a nearby sprinting player, vehicle, undead mob or recent attacker instead of repeatedly feeding or brushing it.

Natural interaction with spiders
Unrolled armadillos make spiders and cave spiders flee. This behavior can help keep a small collection area calmer, but it does not replace lighting, walls or other normal base defenses. The armadillo is still passive and does not serve as a general-purpose combat guard.
How to get armadillo scutes
Periodic drops
Armadillos drop scutes periodically on their own. Mojang’s Java and Bedrock notes describe this as a periodic or random drop but do not publish a numeric interval, a fixed chance or a guaranteed number of scutes per hour. Do not plan a farm around an exact timer unless the documentation for your specific version supplies one.

Brushing an armadillo
Brushing is the controllable collection method. Use a brush on an armadillo when it is unrolled and not responding to a nearby threat.
- Clear sprinting players, vehicles and undead mobs from the working area.
- Wait for the armadillo to unroll if it has entered its shell.
- Equip a brush and use it on the armadillo.
- Collect the scute item that appears, then allow the armadillo to return to a calm state before brushing again.
The official notes confirm brushing as a source but do not state a guaranteed yield for every brush. A brush action is therefore not a promise of one scute each time. Keep spare tools and storage available if you are collecting several animals.
Brushing with a dispenser
Bedrock’s documentation explicitly notes that a dispenser can brush scutes off an armadillo. To build a hands-off station, place a dispenser so its face points at the armadillo, load it with brushes and trigger it with your redstone circuit. Fence or otherwise contain the animal so it stays in front of the dispenser, and remove threat sources that would keep it rolled up.
Dispensers make repeated brushing practical, but the release notes still provide no numeric interval or guaranteed scute yield. Redstone timing is not the same thing as a documented drop rate, so measure your own setup in the exact version you play if output matters.
Keeping a collection area productive
- Use a lead or a contained pen to prevent wandering.
- Keep the pen free of undead mobs and vehicle traffic.
- Do not sprint through the pen when you need the armadillo unrolled.
- Leave enough room to approach with a brush or align a dispenser.
- Store scutes in a nearby chest before beginning a long collection session.
What armadillo scutes are used for
Crafting Wolf Armor
Scutes are the material for Wolf Armor. Open a crafting table or the recipe book in your current edition and select the Wolf Armor recipe; the game will show the current arrangement and required quantity for that version. The cited release notes establish the use of scutes but do not provide a recipe diagram or a quantity to reproduce here, and later versions can alter recipe presentation.
Wolf Armor is intended for a tamed adult wolf. It protects that wolf from most damage until the armor’s durability is exhausted. It is not player armor, and it cannot be equipped on an untamed wolf or a puppy.

Dyeing the armor
Wolf Armor can be dyed in a manner similar to leather armor. Dyeing changes the armor’s color without changing its basic protective purpose, allowing different wolves or packs to be visually distinguished.
Repairing worn Wolf Armor
Scutes repair equipped Wolf Armor. In practice, keep scutes in your inventory, interact with the wolf and use the repair interaction supported by your edition. Bedrock documentation also describes an anvil repair path: place the damaged Wolf Armor and scutes in an anvil and complete the repair if the interface accepts the combination.
The cited Java notes establish repair with scutes while the armor is equipped, but they do not establish a separate Java anvil procedure. Do not assume Bedrock’s documented anvil route exists identically in Java without checking the release notes for your version.

Only the wolf’s owner can equip, repair or shear its Wolf Armor. If another player cannot change the armor, that restriction is expected rather than a broken interaction. Shears remove the armor from the wolf; use them when you need to take the item off instead of trying to damage the wolf or force an inventory exchange.

A safe, efficient armadillo-to-armor workflow
- Choose the destination biome. Travel to a Savanna or Badlands area and search open ground for a passive armadillo.
- Prepare the approach. Stop sprinting, dismount vehicles and clear undead mobs from the immediate area.
- Contain the animal. Use a lead or a secure pen so it cannot wander while you gather materials.
- Attract or breed if needed. Hold Spider Eyes to guide it. Feed two adults to breed, or feed a baby to speed growth.
- Collect scutes. Wait for periodic drops, brush the unrolled armadillo, or aim a dispenser at it on Bedrock.
- Craft Wolf Armor. Use the current crafting-table recipe shown by your edition’s recipe book.
- Equip the right wolf. The target must be your tamed adult wolf, and only that wolf’s owner can perform the interaction.
- Maintain durability. Repair with scutes while equipped; on Bedrock, use the documented anvil route when that interface is more convenient.
- Remove armor safely. Use shears when you need to take Wolf Armor off the wolf.
Troubleshooting common problems
“The armadillo keeps curling up.”
Stop sprinting near it, dismount any vehicle, and check for undead mobs or a recent attack. Give it about four threat-free seconds to unroll. A lead, water or an airborne state prevents rolling, but those are transport or environmental exceptions rather than a way to collect scutes from a permanently calm mob.

“Feeding Spider Eyes did not tame it.”
That result is normal. Spider Eyes attract armadillos and support breeding; the documented mechanics do not grant ownership or pet behavior. To keep one nearby, use a lead or enclosure instead.
“Brushing produced no scute.”
Check that you are using a brush on an unrolled armadillo and that no threat is keeping it defensive. A successful brush is not documented as a guaranteed one-scute transaction, so repeated attempts may be necessary. No official numeric interval or fixed per-brush yield is provided for the cited releases.
“My dispenser does nothing.”
On Bedrock, confirm that the dispenser face points directly at the armadillo, that it contains brushes and that your redstone circuit is activating it. Keep the armadillo in front of the dispenser and remove nearby threats. The Bedrock notes specifically document dispenser brushing; do not assume an identical setup or behavior in Java without checking that edition’s current notes.
“I cannot put Wolf Armor on the animal.”
Verify that the wolf is both tamed and adult, and that you are its owner. Wolf Armor is not player armor and is not intended for puppies or untamed wolves. If the wolf belongs to another player, the owner restriction blocks equip, repair and shearing.
“The anvil will not repair the armor.”
The anvil path is explicitly described in Bedrock documentation. Java’s cited notes establish repair with scutes while the armor is equipped but do not establish the same anvil workflow. Confirm your edition and version before treating an unavailable anvil combination as a bug.
“I cannot find armadillos in my usual area.”
Return to the biome requirement: the documented locations are Savanna and Badlands. Searching forests, plains or other attractive-looking terrain will not satisfy that requirement. Also check that your game is running a release that includes Armored Paws rather than an older version.
Version and terminology notes
Mojang’s Java documentation identifies Armadillo Scutes as the material used to craft Wolf Armor and describes the armadillo as a new passive mob. The corresponding Bedrock release documentation mirrors the core mechanics and adds the explicit dispenser and anvil details noted above. Because both references are tied to 2024 releases, treat version numbers, interface labels and any future balancing changes as edition-specific rather than universal Minecraft rules.
