In Portainer, updating a container safely is a two-part operation: pull the desired image, then recreate the container with its existing configuration and persistent storage. Pulling an image alone does not change the container that is already running.

What “update” means in Portainer
A Docker container is a runnable instance created from an image. The image is the packaged application, while the container is the running instance with its environment variables, port mappings, networks, restart policy, and storage attachments. Replacing the image does not automatically alter an existing container.

Portainer’s documented edit workflow creates a new container with the updated settings and replaces the old one. That distinction explains why an image pull by itself has no visible effect on a running service: the new image is present locally, but the old container is still using the image from which it was created.
For a standalone container, the normal sequence is:

If the container belongs to a Portainer stack, use the stack’s update controls instead of editing the generated container directly.
Before you replace anything
Identify who owns the deployment
Open Portainer and determine whether the service appears under an individually managed container or is generated by a stack. A stack definition is the source of truth for its containers. Direct edits to a stack-generated container can be lost the next time the stack is deployed, so stack services should be updated from the stack view.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check the image status
In Containers, inspect the image-status indicator for the service. Portainer uses these symbols:
- Green tick: the local image is current according to Portainer’s check.
- Orange cross: a newer image is available in the remote registry.
- Grey hyphen: Portainer cannot determine the image status.
Use the reload control to run the check again when the status is stale or grey. A green tick does not make a mutable tag reproducible: a tag can move later even after Portainer reports the local copy as current.
Record a rollback point
For a critical service, record the image tag and, where available, the image digest currently in use. A tag such as latest is a movable reference; a digest identifies a specific image version. Also note the container’s current settings before opening the edit screen:
- Environment variables, including credentials, paths, and feature flags.
- Published host-to-container ports.
- Attached networks and any aliases.
- Restart policy.
- Named volumes and bind mounts, including their container paths.
- The registry, repository, and tag.
Keeping this record makes it possible to recreate the previous version without guessing if the replacement has a compatibility problem.

Protect persistent data
Containers are replaceable and should not be treated as the permanent home for databases, uploads, or configuration that must survive recreation. Put that data in Docker volumes or bind mounts and verify the attachments before deployment. Files written only to the container’s writable layer can disappear when the old container is replaced.
Update a standalone container step by step
1. Pull the image in Portainer
- Open Images in the environment that runs the service.
- Choose the registry to use.
- Enter the image repository and tag. Use the exact tag you intend to deploy; do not change tags casually during an update.
- If the environment has multiple nodes, select the node where the container will run.
- Click Pull the image.
Wait for the pull to finish and confirm that the image appears in the local image list. This action downloads or refreshes the image only. It does not stop or recreate an existing container.
2. Open the container’s edit view
Return to Containers, open the service, and choose Duplicate/Edit. Portainer presents the configuration that will be used to create the replacement. Treat this screen as a configuration review, not as a place to redesign the deployment while changing the image.
3. Preserve the operating configuration
Compare the edit form with the record you made before the update. Keep the existing values unless the image publisher’s release notes require a deliberate migration.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Environment variables: retain application settings, database connection details, and secret references. Removing a variable can make an otherwise compatible image start with different defaults.
- Ports: preserve each host and container port mapping. A service may be running while still being unreachable if its published port changes.
- Networks: keep the same user-defined networks and aliases so dependent containers can still resolve the service.
- Restart policy: retain the policy that controls whether the service returns after a host or daemon restart.
- Volumes and bind mounts: preserve every source-to-target mapping. These mounts carry the data that must outlive the old container.
Check for image-specific changes separately. A new image may require a database migration, a renamed variable, a changed default port, or a different file permission. Those requirements come from the image publisher’s release notes; Portainer cannot determine application compatibility for you.
4. Deploy and replace the old container
- Click Deploy the container.
- When Portainer asks whether to replace the existing container, confirm Replace.
Portainer creates a new container with the settings shown in the edit view and replaces the old one. Expect a short interruption while the old instance is stopped and the replacement is started. The exact downtime depends on the application and host; Portainer does not establish a universal duration.

5. Verify the result
- Confirm the replacement container is running in Containers.
- Open its logs and look for startup errors, failed migrations, missing files, or authentication failures.
- Use the application’s own health endpoint, login page, or other normal check.
- Exercise a representative operation, such as reading existing data or uploading a test item, without making destructive changes.
- Confirm that the expected volumes, networks, ports, and restart policy are still attached to the replacement.
Container state alone is not proof that the application is healthy. A process can remain running while the application cannot connect to its database or serve requests.
Prevent Portainer from reusing a cached image
When you deploy or recreate a container, enable Always pull the image if you want Portainer to contact the registry rather than rely on a locally cached copy. This is particularly important when a mutable tag has been updated remotely but the host already has an older image associated with that tag.

Update a service deployed as a Portainer stack
Use the stack, not the generated container
A stack can create one or many containers from its compose definition. Open the stack and update it through the stack controls. Editing one generated container may appear to work temporarily, but the next stack deployment can recreate it from the stack definition and discard the manual change.
Enable Re-pull image
When updating the stack, enable Re-pull image to retrieve the newest image referenced by the stack. Portainer documents this behavior as equivalent to Docker’s --pull=always. The stack still uses the repository and tag written in its definition; re-pulling does not select a different tag for you.
Use Force redeployment deliberately
Enable Force redeployment when you need Portainer to recreate the stack’s containers even though the Git-backed or other stack definition has not changed. This is useful when a mutable tag points to a new image but the definition itself is identical.

Force redeployment can overwrite local changes. Treat the stack source as authoritative, and make any intended configuration change in that source before redeploying. Do not rely on a hand-edited container as a permanent configuration store.
Verify every service in a multi-container stack
After the stack update, inspect each affected service rather than checking only the first container:
- Confirm all expected containers were recreated and are running.
- Review logs for dependency-order failures, migrations, and connection errors.
- Check that shared networks and volume mounts remain present.
- Test the user-facing entry point and a representative operation.
A stack update can succeed at the orchestration level while one application component remains unhealthy, so application-level checks are still required.
Choose the right update strategy
| Decision | Option | What it means | Main risk or trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deployment ownership | Standalone container | Use Duplicate/Edit, deploy, and confirm Replace. | Manual edits must be repeated consistently when the service is recreated. |
| Deployment ownership | Portainer stack | Update the stack and use Re-pull image; use Force redeployment when recreation is required without a definition change. | Local changes can be overwritten because the stack source is authoritative. |
| Version reference | Mutable tag | Convenient for tracking a channel such as a latest release; the tag can point to a different image later. | Reproducing a previous deployment and rolling back is less certain. |
| Version reference | Digest or fixed previous tag | Identifies the exact image reference you recorded before replacement. | Updating requires intentionally selecting a newer reference. |
| Data location | Docker volume or bind mount | Data remains available when the container is replaced. | The mount must be preserved and the new image must understand the data layout. |
| Data location | Container writable layer | Data exists only inside that container instance. | Replacement can remove it; it is unsuitable for required persistent data. |
| Operations | Manual Portainer update | Provides a review point for configuration and logs. | Someone must perform and verify each update. |
| Operations | Business Edition webhook | Can trigger a redeploy with the latest image for a tag or with a different tag. | Requires webhook setup and appropriate access controls; it is not available in Edge Agent-only environments. |
Automate updates with Portainer webhooks
Portainer Business Edition supports webhooks for containers and stacks. A webhook can trigger a redeployment using the latest image associated with the same tag, or it can update the deployment to a different tag. This is useful when an external release process should initiate the same replacement operation without an interactive Portainer session.
Stack webhook requests can include pullimage=false when the request must prevent an image pull. That parameter is an exception to the normal “retrieve the current image” behavior and should be used only when the automation design requires it.
Webhooks do not remove the need for safe image and data practices. Keep persistent data in volumes or bind mounts, retain a rollback reference, and monitor the resulting container and application health. They are optional automation, not a substitute for a tested deployment process.

Troubleshoot common update problems
The image status shows a grey hyphen
A grey hyphen means Portainer cannot determine whether the local image is current. Use the reload control and check the registry, repository, and tag in Images. If the status remains unknown, make the version decision explicitly rather than assuming that the local image is either current or obsolete. Pull the intended reference, then proceed through the replacement workflow.
Recommended Free Tools
The status shows an orange cross, but the running service did not change
The orange cross indicates that a newer remote image is available; it does not perform the update. Pull the image, open Duplicate/Edit, preserve the settings and mounts, deploy, and confirm Replace. Verify the replacement afterward.
The pull fails
Check the selected registry, repository spelling, tag, and node. Confirm that the environment can reach the registry and that the image reference is available there. Do not replace the running container until the intended image has been pulled successfully, unless you have an alternative recovery plan.
The replacement starts and immediately exits
Inspect the replacement container’s logs. Common clues include a missing environment variable, an incorrect mount path, a failed database migration, an unavailable dependency, or a permission problem. Compare the edit form with the recorded configuration and verify that the new image’s documented requirements are met.
The application starts but data appears missing
Stop treating the symptom as an image problem until you verify the mounts. Check that every named volume or bind mount is attached to the same container path as before and that the replacement is connected to the correct networks. If data existed only in the old container’s writable layer, replacing that container may have removed the only copy.
The stack update removed a manual change
This is expected when the stack definition is authoritative. Restore the intended setting in the stack source, then redeploy the stack. Avoid applying persistent configuration directly to a generated container.
A webhook cannot be used in the environment
Container and stack webhooks are a Portainer Business Edition feature, and the documented container webhook capability is unavailable for Edge Agent-only environments. Use the supported manual stack or container workflow, or change the deployment architecture if automation is a requirement.
Rollback when the new image is not usable
If the replacement fails health checks, do not delete your rollback information. Stop or remove the failed replacement according to your normal operating procedure, then recreate the service from the previous tag or digest using the same environment variables, ports, networks, restart policy, and mounts. For a stack, restore the previous image reference in the stack source and redeploy with the appropriate pull setting.
Keep the data mounts unchanged during rollback. A rollback changes the application image; it should not silently point the service at an empty volume or a different host directory. After the previous version is running, inspect logs and test the application before deciding whether to attempt another upgrade.
Quick Recap
Final update checklist
- Determine whether the service is standalone or stack-managed.
- Check the image indicator and reload its status when necessary.
- Record the current tag or digest for rollback.
- Verify that required data is in Docker volumes or bind mounts.
- Pull the intended repository and tag on the correct node.
- Use Always pull the image when a fresh registry check is required during deployment.
- For a standalone container, choose Duplicate/Edit and preserve all configuration.
- Deploy and confirm Replace.
- For a stack, update the stack with Re-pull image; use Force redeployment only when its overwrite behavior is acceptable.
- Check container status, logs, mounts, and the application’s own health or login page.
- Keep the previous image reference until the new version has passed verification.
