Each tameable Minecraft animal has its own trigger: use bones for wolves, raw fish for cats, and seeds for parrots. Horses, donkeys, mules and llamas are tamed by repeatedly mounting them until they stop bucking you off; sugar, wheat, apples and carrots can make that process easier. After taming, several animals can follow commands, fight alongside you, carry equipment or breed.

Quick reference: what tames each animal?
The fastest way to choose a method is to identify the animal first. This table separates an item-based tame from the mount-and-repeat method.

Before you start: prepare the right item and approach
Match the item to the animal
Do not use a generic “pet food” strategy. Bones are the wolf item, raw fish is the cat item, and seeds are the parrot item. Mount-based animals do not become tame because you feed them one item; you must mount them repeatedly and survive the bucking animation.

Bring more than one attempt’s worth
The available guides do not establish a universal number of bones, fish, seeds or mounting attempts. Carry a surplus so you do not have to leave halfway through. Exact success chances can vary with game version, and a frequently repeated estimate of roughly 33 percent per bone for wolves is not confirmed by the primary page cited above.
Use a slow approach for cats
One taming guide specifically advises crouching and approaching a cat slowly because moving quickly makes it run away. The same cautious approach is useful whenever an animal is skittish: stop sprinting, close the distance gradually and offer the item when the animal is within interaction range.

Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, console and mobile versions can use different buttons for the interact action. Use your edition’s normal interact control rather than assuming a keyboard key. The retrieved guides do not state a single edition, version number or universal control layout, so verify the current behavior on the Minecraft Wiki if an interaction does not register.
How to tame a wolf
Step-by-step
- Find a wild wolf.
- Put bones in your usable item slot.
- Approach the wolf and use the interact action with a bone.
- Continue offering bones until the wolf is tamed. The supplied sources do not establish a fixed number of bones or a guaranteed per-bone probability.
- Once the wolf accepts the tame, use the available interaction to switch it between sitting and following.
The wolf method is item-based: mounting is not involved. If the wolf keeps rejecting bones, continue with additional bones rather than switching to meat. Raw meat belongs to breeding after taming, not to the initial wolf-taming step.
What a tamed wolf does
- A tamed wolf can sit or follow on command.
- It can attack mobs that hurt its player.
- It can breed with another tamed wolf when given the appropriate breeding food.
How to breed wolves
After you have two tamed wolves, use raw meat to initiate breeding. The breeding summary also lists raw fish for cats, but it does not specify one universal meat type for wolves. Keep the animals tamed before attempting this; the breeding instruction is not a substitute for the initial bone-based tame.

How to tame a cat
Step-by-step
- Locate a wild cat.
- Hold raw fish.
- Crouch and move toward the cat slowly. A guide warns that moving quickly causes the cat to run.
- When close enough, use the interact action to offer the raw fish.
- Repeat with additional raw fish if necessary until the cat is tamed.
The available material identifies the item as raw fish without establishing a single fish species, a required quantity or a success percentage. If a cat flees, stop chasing it at full speed; create distance, crouch again and make a slower approach.

How to breed cats
Two tamed cats can be bred with raw fish. This is a separate use of the food: raw fish is the taming item for a wild cat and also appears in the breeding guidance for tamed cats.
How to tame a parrot
Step-by-step
- Find a wild parrot.
- Hold seeds. The guides list wheat, melon, pumpkin and beetroot seeds.
- Use the interact action to offer seeds.
- Continue offering seeds until the parrot is tamed.
Unlike horses and llamas, parrots are not tamed by mounting. Unlike wolves and cats, their listed item is seeds rather than bones or raw fish.
Parrot abilities after taming
- A tamed parrot can sit on the player’s shoulder.
- It can mimic nearby mob sounds.
The supplied breeding summary covers wolves, cats, horses, donkeys and llamas, but does not provide a breeding item for parrots. Do not assume that the wolf, cat or livestock foods apply to parrots.
How to tame horses, donkeys, mules and llamas
These animals use the mount-and-repeat method rather than an instant food-based tame. The broad procedure is the same: mount, get thrown off, mount again and continue until the animal stops bucking you off.

The mount-and-repeat procedure
- Approach the animal you want to tame.
- Use the interact action to mount it.
- Expect the animal to buck you off while it is still wild.
- Mount it again after each throw.
- Repeat until it no longer bucks you off. That change indicates the animal has accepted the tame.
Favourite foods can make this process easier. The guides name sugar, wheat, apples and carrots for the mount-tamed group. They do not provide a guaranteed reduction in the number of attempts, so treat the foods as assistance rather than a guaranteed shortcut.
Horse-specific notes
Horses are the clearest example of mount taming: feeding alone is not the listed taming trigger. Mount repeatedly, using sugar, wheat, apples or carrots if you want the process to be easier, and stop once the bucking ends. After taming, the horse is available for the normal horse-management actions supported by your game version.
Donkey-specific notes
Donkeys follow the same repeated-mount method in the supplied guides. Their breeding item is different from that of wolves and cats: golden apples or golden carrots are listed for breeding horses and donkeys. Keep the breeding step separate from taming; a wild donkey must first accept repeated mounting.
The mule discrepancy
Mules are the one major unresolved case in the supplied material. One guide says mules cannot be tamed directly and must be bred from a tamed horse and a tamed donkey; another guide presents mules within the mount-taming group. Because those claims conflict, do not treat a direct-mule procedure as universal.
If you need a dependable plan, tame a horse and a donkey first, then check the current rules for your edition and version on the Minecraft Wiki. The wiki page is the appropriate place to resolve whether your release permits direct mule taming.
Rank #4
Llama and trader-llama notes
Llamas and trader llamas are listed with the mount-tamed animals: keep mounting until the animal stops bucking. Hay bales are specifically identified as llama food. Llamas can carry a chest, but they cannot take a saddle, so a successful tame does not turn a llama into a saddled riding animal.
Breeding foods after taming
Breeding is a separate action from taming. The following foods are the combinations identified in the available guidance:
| Animals | Breeding item listed | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Wolves | Raw meat | Use this after both wolves are tamed; bones are for taming |
| Cats | Raw fish | The same broad food category is listed for taming and breeding |
| Horses and donkeys | Golden apples or golden carrots | These foods are for breeding, not the repeated-mount tame |
| Llamas | Hay bales | Hay bales are also identified as llama food during the llama section |
No breeding item is established here for parrots, mules or zombie horses. Avoid transferring a food rule from one species to another without checking the current game documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and what to do
The animal keeps rejecting the item
- Wolf: make sure you are holding bones, not raw meat. Raw meat is listed for breeding tamed wolves.
- Cat: use raw fish and slow your approach. Crouching is specifically recommended because fast movement makes the cat run.
- Parrot: use one of the listed seeds: wheat, melon, pumpkin or beetroot.
If the item is correct but the animal still does not tame, continue with additional attempts. The supplied sources do not establish a fixed quantity that works every time.
The horse, donkey or llama keeps throwing you
Being bucked off is expected before taming. Mount again and repeat. Feeding sugar, wheat, apples or carrots is described as a way to make the process easier, not as a replacement for mounting.
Best Value
The cat runs away before you can interact
Stop sprinting, crouch and close the gap slowly. Chasing at speed can keep the cat out of interaction range indefinitely.
You cannot put a saddle on a llama
That is not a failed tame. Llamas cannot take a saddle. Their listed utility is carrying a chest, so use the llama for storage rather than expecting horse-style saddle equipment.
A claimed rule does not match your version
The retrieved material does not identify a single Minecraft edition or version, and third-party guides can become outdated. Check the current Minecraft Wiki taming page and compare its instructions with your release before concluding that the animal or item is broken.
What about zombie horses?
The official-style Minecraft Wiki taming list includes zombie horses among tameable animals, but the retrieved material does not describe their mechanics in enough detail to provide a reliable step-by-step procedure here. Because the method is not established in the available guidance, consult the current Taming page for your exact edition and version rather than applying the normal horse procedure by assumption.
Edition and version caveats
Animal behavior can change between Minecraft releases, and the supplied guides do not state whether their instructions target Java Edition, Bedrock Edition or another platform. The safest way to use this guide is to treat the item-and-method distinctions as the baseline, then verify disputed or version-sensitive details in the current wiki.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Well-established baseline: bones for wolves, raw fish for cats, seeds for parrots, and repeated mounting for horses, donkeys and llamas.
- Use caution: the exact wolf bone chance, direct mule taming and zombie-horse mechanics are not firmly established in the supplied material.
- Check before breeding: breeding foods differ from taming items and are not documented for every animal listed.
A practical taming checklist
- Identify the animal and select its specific taming item or mount strategy.
- Carry spare bones, raw fish, seeds or favourite foods so you can make multiple attempts.
- For cats, crouch and approach slowly.
- For mount-tamed animals, remount after every buck until the bucking stops.
- After the tame, apply the correct command, equipment or breeding food for that species.
- If the behavior conflicts with this guide, check the current wiki for your edition and version, especially for mules, zombie horses and exact probabilities.
The key distinction is simple: wolves, cats and parrots respond to specific items, while horses, donkeys and llamas respond to persistence in the saddle. Breeding then uses a different set of foods, so keep taming and breeding steps separate when planning a stable or animal collection.
