The reliable setup is version-sensitive: the server and every player must use the same Life in the Village 3 files, Minecraft 1.18.2, and Forge build. The exact current Forge and serverpack releases can change, so verify the file’s supported version in CurseForge before installing.

What you need before you start
Life in the Village 3 (often abbreviated LITV3) is a Forge modpack. A normal client download is not a server. A serverpack contains the Forge server files, libraries, launch scripts and configuration needed to run without a graphical client.
- A computer or hosted Minecraft instance with enough free storage for the server files, libraries and world.
- Java 17 installed and available to the server process.
- The LITV3 Forge serverpack for Minecraft 1.18.2.
- At least 4,096 MB of memory allocated to the server; 6,144–8,192 MB is preferable if your machine or plan allows it.
- Player copies of the same LITV3 version, installed through a launcher such as the CurseForge app or GDLauncher.
- Permission to edit text files and run a batch file on Windows or a shell script on Linux and other Unix-like systems.
If you are self-hosting for people outside your home network, you will also need a reachable network connection and firewall/router rules that permit Minecraft traffic. The exact networking steps depend on your operating system, router and internet provider, so use their documentation for the required port and address settings.

Choose self-hosting or a managed panel
Self-hosting gives you direct access to server.properties, user_jvm_args.txt, Java and every server file. It avoids a recurring hosting bill, but you are responsible for installation, updates, backups, uptime, firewall settings and troubleshooting. A managed panel costs money but usually supplies a web console, automatic restarts and a one-click modpack installer.

Use CurseForge’s Additional Files section
- Open the Life in the Village 3 project page in CurseForge.
- Open Additional Files, where server distributions are listed separately from the regular client download.
- Select the Forge serverpack that supports Minecraft 1.18.2. A file reported for this setup is
LITV3-Serverpack-1.3, uploaded bydreams01in October 2022. - Prefer the latest serverpack that is explicitly marked for 1.18.2. The current release and exact Forge build were not established in the available documentation, so check the file’s own supported-version label.
- Download the archive to a short, simple folder such as a dedicated Minecraft server directory. Do not use the client modpack ZIP as a substitute.
Why the client ZIP is the wrong file
The client pack is designed for a player’s launcher and can contain client-only files. The serverpack includes the launch scripts and server-side layout expected by Forge. Starting with the wrong archive commonly leads to missing libraries, no usable launch script or a server that does not match the players’ mods.
Install Java 17
Windows
- Install a Java 17 runtime or JDK using its normal installer location.
- Keep note of the installation directory. The included script normally finds Java when it is installed in the default location.
- If the console reports
Error occurred during initialization of VM, openrun.batin a text editor and set the Java executable to the full path of your Java 17 installation.
Linux and other Unix-like systems
- Install Java 17 using your distribution’s package manager or an approved Java distributor.
- Confirm that the command-line Java selected by your shell is version 17.
- Make the server’s
.shlauncher executable if necessary, then run that script from the server directory.
Do not assume that a newer or older Java release will work simply because it launches another Minecraft version. This LITV3 setup specifically recommends Java 17.
Extract and prepare the server files
- Create a folder dedicated to the server. Avoid spaces and very long names in the complete path; this also prevents the Windows
Path is too longerror reported by the setup guidance. - Extract every file from the serverpack into that folder. Keep the directory structure intact.
- Open
eula.txtafter the first preparation step. Change the EULA line fromfalsetotrueonly after reading and accepting Minecraft’s EULA. - Open
server.propertiesand set the name, difficulty, game mode, player limit and other values you want. Save the file as plain text. - Open
user_jvm_args.txtif you need custom Java flags. Leave options unchanged unless you understand what they do; memory allocation is the first setting to address.
The exact files created can vary slightly between serverpack releases. If a script asks you to agree to the EULA or generates configuration files on its first run, stop, edit the requested file, and start it again.

Allocate enough memory
Memory is the main capacity decision for this pack. The Life in the Village 3 GitHub wiki recommends at least 4,096 MB, with 6,144–8,192 MB if available. Other published hosting guidance gives a range rather than one universal requirement:

For a private server with only a few players, start at the documented 4 GB floor if hardware is constrained. If several people will explore simultaneously, or the server is public, choose the 6–8 GB range when possible. Leave memory for the operating system and other applications; assigning every available megabyte can make the host unstable.
On a panel, memory is selected by the plan or a slider. On a self-hosted installation, use the serverpack’s documented JVM argument file rather than inventing a second launch command. Change one setting at a time so you can identify whether a failure is caused by memory or by Java and Forge.
Start the server
Windows
- Double-click
run.batfrom the server directory, or launch it from a command prompt opened in that folder. - Watch the console while Forge loads libraries and mods. The first start can take longer because files and the world are being created.
- If the process stops and asks for the EULA, close it, edit
eula.txttotrue, and runrun.batagain. - Keep the console window open while players are connected. Use the server’s normal stop command before closing it so the world saves cleanly.
Linux
- Open a terminal in the extracted server directory.
- Run the included
.shscript. If the shell denies permission, grant execute permission to that script and run it again. - Complete the same EULA, configuration and memory checks used on Windows.
- Use a persistent terminal session or service manager if the server must continue running after you disconnect; configure that separately according to your distribution.
Configure the world and player settings
server.properties is the central text configuration file. At minimum, review the server name, game mode, difficulty, maximum players and any whitelist or online-mode policy you intend to use. Save the file while the server is stopped, then start the server again for changes to take effect.
Back up the world and configuration before major changes. A modpack update can alter world-generation or mod behavior; retaining a copy gives you a recovery point if a new serverpack does not load an existing world correctly.

Make the server reachable
A server running successfully on the host is not automatically reachable by friends. For a self-hosted machine, allow the Java server through the operating system firewall and configure your router to forward Minecraft traffic to that machine if players connect from the internet. Give friends the address appropriate to your network: a local address for players in the same home network, or your public address when remote access is configured.
Managed panels normally provide an address and handle the underlying network service. Use the address shown in the panel rather than guessing. Never publish administrative credentials, console access or private network details in a public chat.
Install the matching client pack
- Each player installs Life in the Village 3 through the CurseForge app or a launcher such as GDLauncher.
- Select the same Minecraft 1.18.2 release and the same LITV3 pack version used by the server.
- Place the client instance in a short path without spaces or excessive folder nesting. This avoids the reported
Path is too longfailure on Windows. - Launch the instance once before joining so the launcher can finish downloading libraries and mods.
- Enter the server address supplied by the host and connect. A missing-mod or incompatible-version message means the client and server files do not match.
Do not mix a newer client pack with an older serverpack, even if both are called Life in the Village 3. Match the complete release and Minecraft version, not just the name.

Other plans
StickyPiston guidance lists 6 GB as a minimum and 7 GB or more for public or multiplayer use. Servers4Gamers recommends a 7 GB plan. Treat these as sizing advice, not guarantees of tick rate or player capacity, and read the provider’s current plan limits before purchasing.
Troubleshooting common failures
Error occurred during initialization of VM
Java is usually missing, the wrong major version is selected, or the script points to an invalid executable. Confirm Java 17 is installed, then edit run.bat to use the full path to the Java executable. Retry from the server directory so relative paths resolve correctly.
Path is too long
Move both the server and client instances to a short folder path with no spaces or unnecessary nested directories. Re-extracting into a shorter location is safer than renaming individual library folders.
The server immediately stops and mentions the EULA
Open eula.txt, change false to true after accepting the EULA, save it, and start the launcher again.

Recheck that the server uses the Forge 1.18.2 serverpack and that every client uses the same LITV3 release. A client ZIP cannot replace the serverpack. Remove an accidentally different instance and install the matching pack through the launcher.
The process runs out of memory or becomes unresponsive
Stop the server cleanly, increase its allocation within the available hardware or hosting plan, and reduce the number of simultaneous heavy activities. Move from the 4 GB floor toward 6–8 GB when possible. Do not allocate more memory than the host can provide to the operating system.
A one-click installer shows an unexpected version
Stop before creating a world. MTXServ and Apex summaries do not identify a Minecraft version, so inspect the panel’s game-file label or support information and confirm 1.18.2. If the panel cannot identify the version, install from the official serverpack instead.
Maintenance checklist
- Back up the world,
server.properties, EULA file and any custom JVM arguments before updating. - Record the exact LITV3, Minecraft and Forge versions so every player can reproduce the instance.
- Keep Java on the recommended major version, Java 17, unless the specific serverpack documentation changes.
- Monitor console logs after restarts and after adding or removing mods.
- Review memory use as the world and player count grow; the original 4 GB minimum may no longer be comfortable.
- Test updates on a copy of the world before replacing the live installation.
Which hosting method should you use?
Choose self-hosting when you want complete file and JVM control, already have a machine that can remain online, and are comfortable managing Java, firewalls and backups. Choose a panel when reducing setup time and maintenance matters more than maximum control, and select a plan with at least the memory tier appropriate to your player count.
Regardless of method, the non-negotiable checks are the same: Forge, Minecraft 1.18.2, the correct LITV3 serverpack, Java 17, an accepted EULA and enough memory. Confirm those five items before debugging anything more complicated.
