Search for a Deep Dark beneath large caves or mountains, approach from above at about Y -40, and open a controlled viewing window before descending toward the city’s usual center near Y -51. Use wool or wool carpet for a quiet route, move while sneaking, and leave immediately if a Warden is summoned; the best loot is valuable precisely because reaching it is dangerous.

What an Ancient City is
Ancient Cities are enormous underground structures generated inside the Deep Dark biome, the sculk-covered biome introduced with Minecraft’s Wild Update. Their streets and chambers are built mainly from deepslate around a large reinforced-deepslate frame in the middle. The frame resembles a portal, but it is decorative: in current Java and Bedrock gameplay it cannot be activated as a transport portal.

The Deep Dark itself can contain sculk blocks, veins, sensors and shriekers without containing a city. A city is therefore a separate structure search, not an automatic reward for finding the biome. Generation depends on the world seed, Minecraft edition and release, so a coordinate that works in one version is not a universal location.
Check your edition and version before searching
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition share the Ancient City concept, but world generation and Warden behavior can change between releases. Confirm the edition and exact game version before using a seed map or structure finder. Tools that support the wrong edition can show coordinates for a different terrain layout.

A current Minecraft Tools guide places the city center at approximately Y -51 for its Java/Bedrock guidance. Treat that as a useful depth target rather than a guaranteed altitude: the city’s floor, surrounding caves and your particular release can differ. The safest search plan is to reach roughly Y -40 above the suspected cavern, inspect through a small opening, and then choose an entry route.
How to find an Ancient City
1. Locate a likely Deep Dark
Begin with a large cave system or mountainous terrain. Deep Dark biomes commonly occur far below the surface, and broad mountain regions give you more vertical rock to search through. While exploring, look for dark sculk-covered floors and walls, sculk veins, vibration-sensing sculk sensors and sculk shriekers. These blocks identify the biome but do not prove that a city is nearby.
When you find only a small patch of sculk, search the connected underground space rather than dropping straight down. Cities occupy large caverns, so a narrow isolated patch may be the edge of a biome with no structure in that direction.
2. Search the biome systematically
Mark explored tunnels with ordinary blocks or signs placed away from sculk. Keep a written coordinate record at the surface and at each branch. A grid-like search through connected caverns is slower than blindly mining but prevents you from repeatedly checking the same dead end.
Do not assume that every Deep Dark contains a city. If natural exploration produces no structure, use an edition- and version-matched seed or structure finder. Enter the world seed, select the correct edition and release, and verify the displayed coordinates in your own world before committing to a long expedition. A finder can improve information quality and reduce travel, but an incorrect version can be worse than searching manually.

3. Approach from above
Once you have a suspected city coordinate, travel to the surface point and dig a controlled staircase downward. Aim for approximately Y -40 first, rather than excavating a vertical shaft into an unknown cavern. A staircase gives you a retreat path and lets you stop before breaking into the city.

At the target depth, make a one-block or two-block viewing window from a safe tunnel. Check for the city’s broad deepslate streets, buildings and central reinforced-deepslate frame. If you see only ordinary cave or sculk, extend the tunnel carefully and create another viewing window instead of opening a large hole.
4. Establish a retreat point
Keep your bed, main storage and valuable equipment outside the city. A bed cannot be used safely as a respawn point in the Nether or End, but in the Overworld it can establish a nearby return point before you enter. Do not place it in the middle of the Deep Dark where a death or Warden chase can strand you beside the structure.
Preparation checklist for the expedition
Pack for recovery, not for a heroic fight. A Warden encounter can end the run quickly, and anything carried into the city may be lost.
| Item or preparation | Why it matters | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Wool blocks and wool carpet | Muffles vibrations and provides a quiet route | Lay carpet before moving between sensors, and use wool blocks for bridges, cover and a marked path |
| Food | Restores health and hunger after falls or incidental damage | Carry more than the minimum needed for the journey home |
| Shield | Protects against ordinary hostile mobs and projectiles outside a Warden encounter | Keep it ready while approaching the city; do not treat it as protection from the Warden’s special attacks |
| Building blocks | Create cover, stair repairs and emergency barriers | Use inexpensive blocks you can replace rather than irreplaceable materials |
| Water bucket | Helps with falls, climbing and ordinary cave hazards | Keep it on the hotbar, but do not rely on water as a complete Warden solution |
| Spare equipment | Limits the cost of a death | Bring armor and tools you can afford to lose, with a replacement set at base |
| Night-vision potions | Improves visibility in the nearly black cavern | Use them to identify streets and chests without placing unnecessary light sources |
| Silk Touch tool | Useful for collecting certain sculk blocks | Use it only when taking sculk is worth the added vibration and time |
| Ender chest | Protects selected loot if you have one | Deposit high-priority items during a safe pause rather than carrying everything back at once |
Leave empty inventory space for books, echo shards, disc fragments and gear. Carrying a full inventory encourages risky decisions when a chest contains something valuable.

How stealth works in the Deep Dark
Sculk sensors detect vibrations. Footsteps, block breaking, projectiles and dropped items can produce signals that activate nearby shriekers. A triggered shrieker gives a warning effect; repeated warnings can eventually summon the Warden. Minecraft’s official Wild Update announcement summarized the intended play style: “To navigate the deep dark, you need to sneak, use Silk Touch, and above all else – don’t wake the warden!”
Move quietly
Hold the sneak key while crossing exposed ground, around chests and whenever you are near sensors. Sneaking reduces the vibrations caused by your movement, but it does not make every action silent. Mining, jumping, throwing items and dropping objects can still create signals.
Lay wool carpet before crossing an open street. Wool muffles vibrations, allowing a planned path between the entrance and the chests you intend to loot. Place carpet from a safe edge, then extend it one section at a time. Avoid sprinting to save a few seconds; the noise can cost the entire expedition.
Control your actions around sensors and shriekers
- Do not break blocks merely to make the city look cleaner or to widen a corridor.
- Do not jump across gaps when a wool bridge or staircase can be built quietly.
- Open chests only after placing yourself on a prepared wool route.
- Do not throw items on the ground to clear inventory space; dropped items can create vibrations.
- Do not repeatedly test a shrieker. If a warning occurs, stop, wait and reassess your route.
Current Minecraft Tools guidance describes a fourth warning within a short period as the point that summons a Warden. The exact warning behavior is release- and edition-sensitive, so treat every warning as a serious retreat signal rather than relying on a fixed count.

A safe looting route
- Mark the entrance. Place a non-scuk marker in the approach tunnel and connect it to the surface staircase. Keep the marker outside the city’s busiest sensor area.
- Build the quiet lane. Extend wool carpet or wool blocks from the entrance toward one small group of chests. Do not attempt to carpet the entire structure before you know where the loot is.
- Watch the surroundings. Pause after each section and identify sensors and shriekers. If a sensor activates, remain still until the area is quiet.
- Loot one chest at a time. Open the nearest chest, inspect it without throwing items, and move the contents directly into your inventory or ender chest.
- Return after a successful chest. Follow the same wool route back to the entrance before choosing another branch. This limits the amount you can lose in one incident.
- Stop when warnings accumulate. A partially looted city is a success if you leave alive. You can return with fresh supplies and a known route.
Light sources can help navigation, but placing blocks and moving around to place them also create opportunities for vibration. Night vision is often the quieter visibility option. Use ordinary lighting only where it materially improves your ability to retreat.

What to do if the Warden appears
Do not plan a normal melee fight. The Warden is blind, yet it can detect intruders through vibrations and smell. Official Minecraft notes warn that blindness does not make it harmless and state that it can sniff out intruders and use vibrations to locate them precisely.
Immediate response
- Stop creating noise. Stop mining, jumping and opening containers. Keep sneaking if you can do so without crossing an exposed route.
- Use the prepared retreat. Move backward along the wool or carpet path toward your entrance. Do not turn a controlled withdrawal into a sprint through uncarpeted ground.
- Redirect only when necessary. A thrown snowball or another distant sound can draw the Warden away from your route, but throwing it also creates a vibration. Use one only when the new sound clearly opens an escape path.
- Break line-of-action by distance and cover. Put solid blocks, bends and elevation changes between you and the Warden while continuing toward the exit. Avoid frantic block breaking beside it.
- Wait outside its detection area. If it stops detecting you, remain quiet. The Warden can eventually burrow and leave; rushing back in can trigger another warning.
Running is often counterproductive because footsteps generate more vibrations and can activate another shrieker. A retreat point, spare equipment and a marked wool route are more valuable than a weapon chosen for a fight you should avoid.
Ancient City loot: what is worth the risk?
Chest contents are randomized. No trip guarantees a particular item, and no authoritative published probability establishes the chance of a specific item or of surviving a Warden encounter. Plan around categories and priorities rather than an expected drop.
| Loot | Why players seek it | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Swift Sneak enchanted books | Provide a movement enchantment associated with Deep Dark exploration | Current guides identify Ancient City chests as the only source of Swift Sneak books; chest randomness still means a city may contain none |
| Echo shards | Craft a recovery compass | The Wild Update announcement specifically identifies Ancient City chests as their source and the recovery compass as the crafting use |
| Enchanted golden apples | Rare, powerful emergency food | Do not assume every city has one; contents vary by chest |
| Disc fragments | Combine into Music Disc 5 | The fragments are rare in Ancient City chests and require multiple pieces |
| Diamonds and enchanted gear | Upgrade equipment or provide useful enchantments | Value depends on your existing equipment and the random enchantments |
| Other enchanted books | Can improve tools, armor or weapons | Keep inventory space available because the specific book is unpredictable |
| Sculk items, candles and soul-light items | Useful for building, decoration and themed bases | Collect them after high-priority loot, especially if doing so would require extra mining |
Prioritize Swift Sneak if you want the distinctive movement enchantment, echo shards if you need a recovery compass, and disc fragments if you are collecting Music Disc 5. If your expedition goal is simply resources, diamonds or enchanted gear may justify a shorter, lower-risk visit; do not continue deeper solely because the first chest was ordinary.

| Approach | Survival risk | Travel cost | Information quality | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local cave search with a wool route | Lower once the route is established, but requires more time in unexplored Deep Dark | Time and supplies for repeated cave exploration | Direct knowledge of your own terrain; no version mismatch | Survival worlds where exploration and discovery matter |
| Edition-correct seed or structure finder | Lower search exposure, but the city still requires a dangerous approach | Less searching; potentially long travel to the coordinates | High only when the seed, edition and release are entered correctly | Players seeking a specific structure efficiently |
| Fast looting without a prepared route | Highest; noise and poor retreat options compound quickly | Low initial setup cost | Low situational control once warnings begin | Generally unsuitable unless the loot is expendable |
The finder changes where you search, not how the city must be entered. Even with exact coordinates, bring wool, a retreat plan and expendable gear.

Troubleshooting common problems
I found sculk but no city
Continue through the connected Deep Dark and check adjacent caverns. A biome can exist without an Ancient City. If you switch to a finder, recheck the world seed, edition and release before trusting its coordinates.

Y -51 is an approximate center stated by current Minecraft Tools guidance, not a universal floor level. Terrain generation, the city’s footprint and version differences can move the visible streets. Search vertically around the predicted depth using small viewing windows rather than assuming one exact layer.
A shrieker warned me before I reached a chest
Stop and identify the sensor or shrieker that reacted. Backtrack onto wool, wait for the warning sequence to end, and choose another approach. Repeated attempts from the same noisy angle are more dangerous than abandoning that chest.
The Warden is blocking the only exit
Stay still when possible and wait for a detection lull. If you must redirect it, create a distant sound away from your wool route, then move quietly in the opposite direction. Do not mine a long escape tunnel beside the Warden while panicking; the block-breaking vibrations can keep it focused on you.
I died and lost the loot
Return with the spare equipment stored at your retreat point, but do not repeat the same route automatically. Rebuild the approach with wool, reduce the number of chests attempted in one run and use an ender chest for the highest-priority items when a safe pause is available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs an Ancient City worth visiting?
For players who want Swift Sneak, echo shards, Music Disc 5 materials or the challenge of Minecraft’s stealth mechanics, yes. The rewards are distinct and the structure is unlike an ordinary cave or fortress. For players who only need routine ores, the risk and preparation are difficult to justify; ordinary mining is safer and more predictable.
Measure success by a controlled return, not by clearing every chest. Find the Deep Dark with edition-correct expectations, approach near the approximate Y -51 center through a viewing window, carpet a route, take the loot that matches your goal and leave before warnings escalate. That method preserves the expedition’s rewards without turning a rare structure into an avoidable death run.
