Short answer: Your Microsoft account identifies you and unlocks eligible Minecraft purchases, Realms, and Marketplace content, but it is not a universal save-synchronization service. A world can remain only on one device, exist in a platform cloud backup, or be stored on a Realm. Transfer steps therefore depend on the edition (Java or Bedrock), device, and storage location. Java and Bedrock players cannot join one another’s sessions; everyone must use the same edition.
This guide explains what your account does, how to move or back up worlds, which devices can play together, why multiplayer connections fail, and what the current Realms plans provide.

Signing in with a Microsoft account connects Minecraft to your identity, purchases, Realms membership, and eligible Marketplace content on supported devices. It does not automatically copy every local single-player world to every platform. Before changing devices, determine whether the world is local-only, backed up by a platform service, or stored on a Realm.
The Mojang-to-Microsoft migration has ended
Minecraft announced the Java account migration on October 21, 2020. The grace period ended on December 18, 2023; Minecraft’s help page states, “The migration grace period concluded December 18, 2023.” Support no longer handles migration-related requests.

An old Java world may still be present on the original computer’s hard drive, but playing Java Edition now requires a purchase connected to a Microsoft account. A new Microsoft account does not inherit the old account’s multiplayer identity. On a server or shared world, the new account appears as a new player at the default spawn without the previous player’s inventory or progress.
Why the same account may show different worlds
Cloud status is world-specific. On Xbox, Minecraft associates cloud saves with the Microsoft account and backs up worlds while you are online and signed in. Newly created worlds are backed up when played online; a world created offline is backed up the first time it is opened online. A world you never play remains on the device until Minecraft uploads it.
Recommended Free Tools
Open the in-game Manage Worlds view to distinguish cloud-synced, cloud-only, and local-only worlds. The available upload and download actions tell you whether a copy exists in the cloud. Do not erase the old device until the intended world is visibly backed up or independently copied.
How to transfer a Minecraft world
Use the procedure for the world’s edition and storage method. Java and Bedrock saves use different formats and cannot be swapped directly.

Java Edition: make a dated backup and move it to another computer
- Open Minecraft Java Edition and select Singleplayer.
- Highlight the world, choose Edit, then select Make Backup. Minecraft creates a ZIP archive whose title includes the backup date.
- Copy that ZIP file to the destination computer using removable storage or another method you trust.
- Unzip the archive. Place the resulting world folder in the destination computer’s Java
savesfolder.
On Windows, the usual location is %appdata%.minecraftsaves. On macOS, it is ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves. Close the game before copying, and keep the original ZIP as a rollback copy. If the world does not appear, confirm that you placed the folder itself in saves rather than an extra folder level created during extraction.
Bedrock Edition: use a Realm as a cross-device bridge
Minecraft’s supported cross-device transfer method for Bedrock is a Realm. You need an active trial or paid Realm subscription, the current game version on both devices, and access to the same Microsoft account.
- On the source device, open the Realm configuration and choose an available world slot, or choose the option to replace that slot’s world.
- Upload the single-player world to the slot. Wait for the upload to finish before closing the game.
- Sign in to the same Microsoft account on the destination device and open the Realm.
- Choose the Realm’s download option. The downloaded world appears in the destination device’s Worlds list as a separate copy.
The copy in your local Worlds list is independent of the live Realm. Continue playing the Realm for shared progress, or play the downloaded copy when you need an offline local world.
Android Bedrock: copy an external-storage world by USB
This file procedure applies only when the world was created with Bedrock’s File Storage Location set to External. It is not a universal method for worlds stored in Application storage.

- Connect the Android device to a computer with a data-capable USB cable that fits the device.
- On Android, select File Transfer or MTP for the USB connection.
- On the computer, locate and copy the
minecraftWorldsfolder to a safe backup location. - On the destination installation, use the documented Bedrock external-storage location and copy the world folder into its
minecraftWorldsdirectory.
If the folder is absent, the world may be using Application storage, or Android may have mounted the phone as charge-only. Switch the USB mode to File Transfer and verify the storage setting before changing files.
Xbox: verify cloud status before replacing a console
Stay online and signed in while opening each world you want backed up. In Manage Worlds, check whether it is cloud-synced or local-only, and use the displayed upload or download action as needed. A world that has not been played online is not guaranteed to be in the cloud merely because the account is the same.
Realm worlds: downloading, replacing, and restoring safely
Replacing a Realm slot can discard progress. Minecraft explicitly recommends downloading a world before replacing it and warns that Realm backups are not retained indefinitely.
Before replacing a world
- Open the Realm’s world-management controls.
- Download the current world to your local Worlds list (Bedrock) or use the Java Realm’s World Backups controls to download a backup into single-player worlds.
- Open the downloaded copy once, confirm the latest builds and inventory are present, and keep an additional copy outside the game if the world is important.
- Only then replace the Realm slot with another world.
Bedrock downloads appear under All Worlds. Downloading first gives you a recoverable snapshot even if the replacement is not what you intended.

Can Java and Bedrock play together?
No. Java players join Java-hosted games, servers, Realms, or LAN sessions; Bedrock players join Bedrock sessions. The word cross-platform does not mean Java-to-Bedrock compatibility.
| Host or session | Joining player must use | Supported cross-play scope |
|---|---|---|
| Bedrock world, server, Realm, or LAN | Bedrock Edition | Supported Bedrock devices can play together, subject to platform and account requirements. |
| Java world, server, Realm, or LAN | Java Edition | Java Realms cross-play is listed for Windows, macOS, and Linux. |
| Java host with Bedrock client | Not compatible | Use the same edition on both sides. |
| Bedrock host with Java client | Not compatible | Use the same edition on both sides. |
Requirements for Minecraft multiplayer
After matching the edition, check the remaining gates in this order:
- Current software: Both players should use the latest available release for that edition.
- Network: Use a stable internet connection for online play, or the same functioning LAN for local play. Java players also need hardware that meets Java Edition requirements.
- Console subscription: Online console multiplayer requires the applicable platform service: Xbox Game Pass Core on Xbox, PlayStation Plus on PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch Online on Nintendo Switch.
- Microsoft account: Console and mobile players need a Microsoft account for the relevant online features.
- Privacy and child permissions: Child accounts must have multiplayer enabled by the family account settings. Privacy restrictions can block joining even when the game and subscription are correct.
- Realm invitation: A Realm requires an invitation from its host. Being signed in does not automatically grant access to somebody else’s Realm.
Why you cannot join a friend’s world
Edition mismatch
Confirm the edition label on both devices first. A Java player cannot join a Bedrock friend’s world, and a Bedrock player cannot join a Java Realm. This is the most common apparent cross-play failure.
Missing console service or permissions
Verify the host and joining player have the required Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo online subscription. For a child account, review multiplayer and communication permissions in the family settings. If the account cannot see invitations or the multiplayer menu, privacy controls are a likely cause.

Realm access and account linking
Ask the Realm owner to confirm that the correct Microsoft account is invited. On PlayStation, the Microsoft account must be linked to the PlayStation Network account for cross-platform games or Realms. One Microsoft account can be linked to only one PSN account at a time. Marketplace purchase access also has platform-specific limits.

Install the same current release on both devices, restart the game after updates, and test another network if the session does not appear. For a local world, the host must be playing and have multiplayer enabled; a local save is not an always-online server. A Realm is the persistent option when friends need access while the owner is offline.
Minecraft Realms plans and limits
The US Minecraft Realms product page checked October 13, 2026 lists these recurring monthly prices and simultaneous-player allowances. Prices, taxes, and availability can differ by country and can change.
| Plan | US monthly price | Concurrent players | Edition and notable features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedrock Realms | USD $3.99 | Host plus 2 players | Bedrock persistent Realm with three world slots, backups, and invited-friend access under the plan terms. |
| Bedrock Realms Plus | USD $7.99 | Host plus 10 players | Bedrock persistent Realm, three world slots, backups, and access to the Marketplace Pass catalog. |
| Java Realms | USD $7.99 | Host plus 10 players | Java persistent Realm, three world slots, backups, and Java-device cross-play on Windows, macOS, and Linux. |
Each plan lists three persistent world slots; the official product wording says, “Your Realm has three persistent world slots.” Membership belongs to the subscription owner, while invited players join through the host’s Realm rather than creating a separate Realm.
Quick Recap
A practical backup checklist
- Identify Java or Bedrock before copying anything.
- Identify whether the world is local, Xbox-cloud-backed, or on a Realm.
- Open the world online at least once before relying on Xbox cloud backup.
- For Java, create the dated ZIP with Singleplayer → Edit → Make Backup.
- For Bedrock transfers, upload to a Realm and download on the destination device.
- For Android file copies, confirm File Storage Location → External before copying
minecraftWorlds. - Download a Realm world before replacing its slot; do not assume old Realm backups will remain forever.
- Keep the original device or backup untouched until the destination copy opens correctly.
