One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe safest default is simple: keep removable batteries in their original packaging, in a cool, dry indoor place at normal room temperature, away from heat, direct sunlight, moisture and loose metal objects. Remove batteries from equipment that will sit unused for a long time. Do not refrigerate or freeze modern household batteries as a general storage strategy; condensation can corrode contacts and damage labels or seals.
How long a battery remains useful depends on its chemistry, temperature, humidity, age and whether it is rechargeable. The shelf-life figures below are manufacturer estimates under stated conditions, not promises that every cell will deliver full performance for the entire period.

How should I store batteries?
Use this procedure for removable AA, AAA, C, D and 9-volt household cells, whether they are single-use primary batteries or rechargeable nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) cells.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Choose an indoor location with a stable, ordinary room temperature. A cupboard or drawer in a living area is preferable to a hot garage, attic, car, shed or windowsill. Avoid places that experience large daily temperature swings.
- Keep the area dry. Do not store cells in damp basements, bathrooms, laundry areas or anywhere condensation routinely forms. Moisture can corrode terminals and packaging.
- Leave batteries in the manufacturer’s package when practical. Packaging keeps terminals from touching conductive objects and helps keep cells from different purchase dates mixed together.
- Separate loose cells from metal. Coins, keys, paperclips and tools can bridge the positive and negative terminals. If batteries are loose, use a nonconductive case or organizer that keeps each cell from contacting metal. Panasonic specifically recommends a resin carry case for eneloop transport or storage.
- Remove cells from equipment that will be idle for an extended period. Seasonal decorations, emergency radios, flashlights and other devices can slowly drain batteries. Prolonged in-device storage increases the chance of leakage and terminal damage.
- Keep compatible sets together. Do not combine old and new batteries, different chemistries, different brands or cells at different charge levels in one device. Replace a device’s set together when its instructions call for matched cells.
- Use only the correct charger. Never attempt to recharge a cell unless it is explicitly labeled rechargeable, and use a charger approved for that chemistry and size.
Labeling a storage box with the purchase date can help you use older cells first, but date rotation does not override inspection: discard any battery that is swollen, leaking, corroded, split or otherwise damaged.

Temperature, humidity and sunlight: why the storage environment matters
Heat accelerates the chemical reactions that consume a battery while it sits unused. Energizer’s storage guidance says prolonged elevated-temperature storage shortens shelf life. A location that feels comfortable to people is generally a better choice than a space that becomes very hot in summer.
Panasonic gives an ideal range of 10–25 °C for its eneloop rechargeable Ni-MH cells and advises against storage above 35 °C, high humidity and direct sun. These limits are product guidance, not a universal specification for every rechargeable battery, so check the label or manual for a different model.
Keep batteries away from heaters, radiators, cooking appliances and sunlit windows. Do not bury them under insulation or place them against an exterior wall that repeatedly becomes damp. Stable conditions matter because repeated warming and cooling can draw humid air into packaging and create condensation.

Should I store batteries in the refrigerator or freezer?
No. Refrigeration or freezing is not a useful general shelf-life strategy for modern household batteries. Energizer’s FAQ states: “No, storage in a refrigerator or freezer is not required or recommended for batteries produced today.” The same guidance warns that condensation from cold storage can corrode contacts or damage labels and seals (Energizer, Non-Rechargeable Batteries FAQ, version 6.2).
Panasonic gives the same practical warning for eneloop: cold storage can allow condensation to form when a cell is removed and exposed to warmer air. Moisture at the terminals or under a seal can create corrosion even if the battery itself was not deeply discharged.

If batteries have been chilled accidentally, leave them sealed until they reach room temperature, then allow any moisture to evaporate before placing them in a device. Never install a visibly wet or corroded cell. The normal-room-temperature recommendation avoids this extra risk without requiring special handling.
How long can batteries be stored?
Shelf life varies by chemistry and by the conditions under which the manufacturer measured it. Energizer’s FAQ gives these approximate ranges for cylindrical cells stored at about 21 °C (70 °F):
| Battery type | Approximate room-temperature storage life | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Cylindrical alkaline primary | 5–10 years | Energizer estimate at about 21 °C; heat shortens storage life. |
| Cylindrical carbon-zinc primary | 3–5 years | Energizer estimate at about 21 °C; not a guarantee for every brand or lot. |
| Cylindrical lithium primary | 10–15 years | Energizer estimate at about 21 °C for cylindrical lithium cells. |
Those ranges come from an Energizer FAQ published in 2012. They describe approximate storage life, not a promise that a cell will deliver its original runtime at the final year of the range. Brand, format, manufacturing lot, temperature history and device load all affect real-world results. A cell stored in a hot vehicle should not be expected to match the room-temperature estimate.
“Cylindrical lithium” in that table means lithium primary cells. Do not apply the 10–15-year range to lithium-ion battery packs built into phones, laptops, cameras, power tools or other equipment. Those packs have different charging, storage and safety requirements; follow the device maker’s instructions.
Do rechargeable batteries lose their charge in storage?
Yes. Rechargeable batteries gradually self-discharge while they sit unused, and higher temperatures increase the rate. Panasonic explains that Ni-MH cells generally lose more charge during storage than dry (primary) batteries. A rechargeable cell can therefore need charging before an emergency or occasional-use device, even if it was full when placed in the drawer.

What Panasonic says about eneloop Ni-MH cells
Panasonic identifies 10–25 °C as the ideal storage range for eneloop and advises avoiding temperatures above 35 °C, high humidity, direct sunlight and refrigerated storage. Its current eneloop product page states that a standard cell “Retains 70%* after 10 years.” The asterisk qualifies this as capacity retention based on IEC 61951-2, section 7.3.2, at 20 °C, using Panasonic’s estimate compared with minimum capacity; results vary with use conditions (Panasonic eneloop product information).
That 70-percent statement is a product-specific estimate under a named test method. It is not a universal promise for every Ni-MH design, charger, age or storage environment. Keep rechargeable cells cool and dry, and recharge them with the charger specified for the cells before relying on them.
How to prevent shorts, leakage and terminal damage
Protect loose batteries from conductive objects
A loose battery can short when its terminals touch a coin, key, paperclip or another piece of metal. Energizer warns that a short can make a cell very hot and increase leakage and personal-injury risk (Energizer Non-Rechargeable Batteries FAQ).
Keep batteries in retail packaging whenever possible. For cells removed from that packaging, choose a rigid, nonconductive AA/AAA or mixed-size storage case that prevents terminals from touching one another or metal contents. A case is an organizer and barrier, not a substitute for following the cell manufacturer’s instructions; avoid any container that allows contacts to rub together.
Keep sets and chemistries matched
Mixing cells of different ages, brands, chemistries or charge states in one device can force the weakest cell to discharge beyond its safe point. Energizer and Panasonic both warn that this raises leakage risk. Install matched cells as directed by the equipment maker, and replace the complete set when appropriate rather than topping up a device with one new cell.

Never recharge a primary cell
Alkaline, carbon-zinc and lithium primary batteries are single-use cells. Recharging them in a charger intended for Ni-MH batteries can cause leakage, rupture or other hazards. Only a battery clearly marked “rechargeable” should go into a charger, and the charger must support that cell’s chemistry and size.
When to remove batteries from a device
Take batteries out before storing equipment for a season or any other long period. Even a switched-off device can draw a small current, and the cell can eventually leak. Leakage damages contacts and may spread into circuit boards, turning a replaceable battery into an equipment repair.
Examples include holiday light strings, emergency flashlights, rarely used cameras, children’s toys, clocks kept in storage and backup computer accessories. Store the removed cells according to the steps above, and leave a note with the device if it requires a particular battery type when returned to service.
For equipment with a built-in lithium-ion pack, do not open the device or remove the pack simply to apply these rules. Use the manufacturer’s storage and charging instructions for that product; the primary-cell guidance here does not establish a safe storage level for lithium-ion packs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to check batteries before you rely on them
- Inspect the cell and package. Look for swelling, dents, tears, corrosion, crystals, wetness or a damaged seal. Set aside anything abnormal and follow local battery-disposal rules.
- Confirm the chemistry and size. Match the label to the device manual. Do not substitute a rechargeable cell for a primary cell, or vice versa, unless the equipment explicitly supports it.
- Check the contacts in the device. White, green or brown deposits, pitting or a sticky film can indicate leakage. Disconnect power and clean or repair contacts according to the equipment maker’s instructions before installing a new set.
- Test rechargeable cells as needed. Recharge Ni-MH cells with their approved charger before use. A battery tester that applies a load can provide more useful information than an unloaded voltmeter, but Energizer cautions that testers usually cannot reliably predict how much runtime remains.
- Run a brief supervised check. After installation, verify that the device starts and that no cell becomes unusually hot, leaks or smells abnormal. Stop using it if any of those signs appear.
Voltage alone does not tell you the exact remaining runtime. The device’s current demand, battery age and internal resistance also matter, so treat a marginal test result as a reason to replace the cell rather than as an endurance guarantee.

A practical storage plan for emergency and occasional-use batteries
For single-use alkaline or carbon-zinc cells
Buy only the quantity you can keep in a cool, dry indoor location, retain the original packaging and place older packages where they will be used first. Carbon-zinc cells have the shortest range in Energizer’s room-temperature figures (about three to five years), while alkaline cells are listed at about five to ten years. Inspect packages periodically instead of assuming the printed date guarantees performance.
For primary lithium cylindrical cells
Keep the cells dry, protected from metal and at ordinary room temperature. Energizer’s approximate ten-to-fifteen-year range applies to cylindrical lithium primary batteries at about 21 °C, not to lithium-ion packs. Check the package and device manual for any model-specific limits.
For rechargeable Ni-MH cells
Store them in a nonconductive case or original packaging within the maker’s temperature guidance. Expect some self-discharge, especially after warm storage, and recharge them before an emergency kit or rarely used device is needed. Keep same-date cells together so a set is not assembled from cells with very different histories.
Common storage mistakes and their fixes
| Mistake | Why it causes trouble | Better practice |
|---|---|---|
| Leaving batteries in a hot car, attic or shed | Elevated temperature accelerates self-discharge and shortens shelf life. | Move them to a stable, ordinary indoor temperature. |
| Putting batteries in the refrigerator or freezer | Condensation can corrode contacts and damage labels or seals. | Store at room temperature in a dry place. |
| Carrying loose cells with keys or coins | Metal can short the terminals, creating heat and leakage risk. | Use original packaging or a nonconductive case. |
| Leaving cells in seasonal equipment | Slow drain and prolonged contact can lead to leakage and terminal damage. | Remove cells before long-term equipment storage. |
| Mixing old and new or unlike cells | The weakest cell can be over-discharged, increasing leakage risk. | Use matched sets and replace them together. |
| Charging a non-rechargeable battery | Primary cells are not designed for charging and may leak or rupture. | Charge only cells labeled rechargeable with the correct charger. |
| Assuming a tester predicts exact runtime | Open-circuit or simple test readings do not model every device load. | Use a load-capable tester as a screening aid, then test in the device or replace doubtful cells. |
What this guidance does not cover
This article addresses removable household primary cells and Ni-MH rechargeables. It does not establish detailed storage percentages, charging levels or temperature limits for lithium-ion packs in phones, computers, cameras, power tools or similar products. Those packs should be stored, charged and transported according to the equipment and battery maker’s manual.
