Mine Faster Underwater: What Aqua Affinity Does in Minecraft

Aqua Affinity speeds up underwater mining in Minecraft, but it does not improve breathing or swimming. Here’s what it affects and where it goes.

Aqua Affinity speeds up underwater mining by removing the mining-speed penalty caused by being underwater. It does not let you breathe longer or swim faster, and mining while floating can still be slower.

What does Aqua Affinity do?

Aqua Affinity is a headgear enchantment that increases mining speed underwater. Normally, mining a block with your head underwater takes five times as long as mining it out of water; Aqua Affinity removes that water-related penalty, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s Aqua Affinity reference.

That does not guarantee every block breaks as quickly as it would on land. Block hardness, your tool, and your position still affect mining. In particular, the Wiki distinguishes the underwater penalty from a separate slowdown for mining while floating: Aqua Affinity does not remove the floating penalty.

Does Aqua Affinity help you breathe or swim?

No. Aqua Affinity affects mining, not oxygen or movement. Respiration is the separate enchantment that increases underwater breathing time. Microsoft’s official Minecraft enchantment documentation lists the effects separately: Aqua Affinity increases mining speed underwater, while Respiration increases underwater breathing time.

Enchantment What it helps with Eligible headgear
Aqua Affinity Mining speed underwater Helmet or turtle shell
Respiration Underwater breathing time Helmet or turtle shell

The eligible items and effects in the table come from Microsoft’s enchantment documentation. Neither enchantment is described there as increasing swimming speed.

What item can get Aqua Affinity?

Microsoft lists helmets and turtle shells as eligible for Aqua Affinity. Equip the enchanted item in your head slot to benefit. The enchantment is listed at level I in the cited reference, so there is no higher ordinary survival level to pursue based on these sources.
