A Cheat Code Locator points to the nearest Cheat Code, not directly to a Sprite you have yet to collect. To free a Sprite, find a code, interact with it, and enter the sequence shown in-game. Epic does not say the Locator filters for missing Sprites or guarantees a new one.
What a Cheat Code Locator actually finds
Epic’s Fortnite Override v42.00 update notes describe the Gizmo this way: “Cheat Code Locator – Locates the nearest Cheat Code.” The target is the code, not a particular Sprite or an item on your uncollected list.

The notes do not specify the Locator’s activation controls, range, cooldown, or whether it places a map marker. Follow the instructions displayed for the item in your current match rather than relying on an assumed button sequence.

- Use the Locator according to its in-game prompt. Search the indicated area for the nearest Cheat Code.
- Check likely hiding places. Epic says codes can be tucked into points of interest (POIs) and sprayed on walls. A Locator narrows the search to a nearby code; it does not eliminate the need to find and interact with it.
- Interact with the code. Enter the sequence shown in-game. Epic describes this as the step that frees a Sprite ally.
- Check your collection. See whether the Sprite is new to your collection, then repeat the search if you are still missing others. The official notes do not say the Locator can tell which Sprites you already own.
What each Cheat Code rarity means for Sprite hunting
Epic’s v42.20 update notes describe relative odds, not exact probabilities. Rarity can help you decide whether to use a code when you find it, but it does not identify a specific Sprite.

| Cheat Code rarity | What Epic says | What it means for your collection |
|---|---|---|
| Rare (blue) | Can produce a Sprite of any rarity. | It may yield a Sprite you do not own, but no particular outcome is promised. |
| Epic (purple) | Can produce a Sprite of any rarity; chances of variants and higher-rarity Sprites are significantly increased. | It improves the stated chances for those outcomes, but does not guarantee a variant, a high-rarity Sprite, or a missing one. |
| Legendary (orange) | Guarantees a variant, with emphasis on higher-rarity variants. | A variant is guaranteed; Epic does not say it will be a named Sprite or one missing from your collection. |
Epic also says the odds of finding a new Sprite improve the longer you go without finding one, increasing the chance of a variant you do not already own. The notes give no numerical odds, so there is no supported percentage or reliable number of searches to expect.
Use sound cues, but treat locations as possibilities
Epic’s Fortnitemares 2026 update notes say Cheat Codes can be heard from farther away. Use that added discoverability to help notice a nearby code while searching.

- Platform Compatibility: Fortnite Video Game designed specifically for Nintendo Switch console
- Visual Design: Multicolor presentation featuring vibrant graphics and engaging visual elements
- Compact Dimensions: Measures 17 x 0.8 x 10.2 cm for convenient storage and handling
- Product Reference: Reference number S7193683 for easy identification and ordering
- Digital Download Code: Includes Transformers Pack content delivered via download code for instant access
The notes also say a code that may spawn in a tunnel near The Battlewoods was made easier to interact with. That is a possible spawn location, not a guarantee that the code will appear there in every match.
What the Locator cannot promise
- It will find a Sprite you do not own; its documented function is to locate the nearest Cheat Code.
- A specific code or coordinate will appear in every match; Epic does not publish a complete guaranteed location map in the cited notes.
- A code’s color guarantees a particular Sprite or exact drop odds; the published rarity guidance is qualitative.
Fortnite’s Sprite and Cheat Code mechanics are tied to seasonal updates, so the current in-game prompts and latest official notes are the best reference if an item behaves differently after a patch.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
