Mindustry’s default dedicated-server port is 6567. A public server must allow that port over both TCP and UDP, and a home-hosted server also needs a router rule forwarding the port to the computer running Mindustry. To use another port, change it at the server console with config port <new-port>, then apply the same number in the host firewall, router, cloud firewall and the address players enter.

Which port does a Mindustry server use?
A dedicated Mindustry server starts on port 6567 by default. The Mindustry Wiki’s current setup guidance, accessed October 15, 2026, specifically says to allow port 6567 for both TCP and UDP. Opening only one protocol can leave players unable to establish or maintain a connection.

A port is only one part of the address. Players need the reachable IP address followed by a colon and the port, such as 198.51.100.24:6567. For a server on your home network, that address normally means your router’s public IP, not the computer’s private address such as 192.168.1.25. For a VPS or other hosted machine, it is the provider-assigned public address.
What must be configured for a public server?
Every layer must agree on the same port. The application listens on one value, the operating-system firewall permits that value, and a home router (if present) forwards it to the correct local machine. A cloud server adds a provider-level firewall to the chain.

If you host without router forwarding, the dedicated server is reachable only by devices on the same local network. Forwarding is not needed when every player is on that LAN, but it is required for ordinary internet connections to a home server.
Dedicated server versus in-game hosting
Dedicated server
The dedicated-server release runs independently of the graphical game client. You start it with Java, leave the process running, and use the server console to load maps and change settings. It is the appropriate choice for a server intended to remain available while no particular player’s game window is open.

The in-game Host Multiplayer Game option is designed for small LAN sessions. It runs only while the game is open and is not the same as a 24/7 dedicated server. If friends are connecting over the internet, use a dedicated process or another remote-hosting arrangement and configure the network path described below.
Start the Mindustry dedicated server
- Download the dedicated-server release that matches the version your players will use.
- Install a compatible Java runtime and launch the server with Java according to the release instructions.
- At the server console, start a game with
host <mapname> [mode]. Replace<mapname>with the map name; the bracketed mode is optional. - Keep the process running while players connect. A listening port with no hosted map can still produce a failed join attempt, so confirm that a game is active before troubleshooting the network.
The server’s default listening port is 6567 unless you have changed it in the configuration. The console is also where you verify the value after making a change.
Check or change the Mindustry port in the console
Mindustry exposes server settings through the config command. Run the command without a value to read the current setting, provide a number to change it, and then read it again to verify.

config portIn this example, the final command should report 5668. The value 5668 is an example used by a Hetzner Community tutorial; its console transcript is dated August 7, 2024. It is not a required Mindustry port. Choose any unused port allowed by your network and operating system, then use that exact value everywhere else.

- Use a numeric port that is not already occupied by another service on the server.
- Avoid changing the application to one number while forwarding or opening a different number. The external router port can be different in some advanced designs, but the straightforward and least error-prone rule is to use the same number at every layer.
- Record the selected value before editing firewall and router rules so that old 6567 rules do not get mistaken for the active configuration.
Forward the port on a home router
Router menus vary by manufacturer and firmware. Look for a page named Port Forwarding, NAT, Virtual Server or a similar term. The Mindustry Wiki recommends finding instructions for the specific make and model of your router rather than assuming that every interface uses the same fields.
- Assign the server computer a stable local IP address. A DHCP reservation in the router is usually preferable to relying on a manually typed address that could later change.
- Open the router’s port-forwarding or NAT page.
- Create a rule whose external or public port is the selected Mindustry port.
- Set the destination or internal IP to the server computer’s stable local address.
- Set the internal port to the same Mindustry port unless your network design deliberately maps it to another value.
- Select both TCP and UDP. If the router requires separate rules, create one rule for each protocol.
- Save or apply the rule, then restart the router only if its interface requires a restart for changes to take effect.
The official example forwards 6567 TCP and UDP. If the console now reports 5668, forward 5668 instead; leaving only a 6567 rule will not expose the server that is listening on 5668.
Why the local IP must be stable
A forwarding rule points to an internal address. If the router later gives the server computer a different DHCP address, the rule can continue pointing at the wrong device even though the Mindustry process and firewall are configured correctly. Reserve the address before testing from the internet.
Open the host and cloud firewalls
Operating-system firewall
On the machine running Mindustry, add inbound rules that permit the selected port over both TCP and UDP. Apply the rules to the network profile used by the server. A router forward cannot bypass an operating-system firewall that drops the incoming packets.

VPS or cloud firewall
A remote server does not sit behind your home router, so there is no household NAT rule to create. It still may have two firewalls: the provider’s cloud security group or firewall and the operating system’s own firewall. Allow the selected TCP and UDP port in both. The Hetzner tutorial’s 5668 example explicitly requires changing the firewall allowance after changing the Mindustry setting.

Give players the correct address
In the Mindustry client, open Play → Join Game → Add Server. Enter the public or remote address in the form <ip-address>:<port>. For example, the Hetzner tutorial shows 203.0.113.1:5668; that address is an example placeholder, so replace it with the server’s actual public address and your selected port.
- Players outside your home network use the router’s current public IP, not the server’s private LAN address.
- Players on the same LAN can generally use the server’s private address and do not depend on internet port forwarding.
- Players must include a non-default port after the colon. Entering only the IP makes the client try its default rather than the custom value.
Optional DNS SRV record
A DNS SRV record can make a custom port easier to share. MindustryServerList documents the _mindustry service with protocol tcp, a target host and the selected port, allowing a subdomain to represent the service instead of asking players to remember host:port. DNS does not replace the Mindustry configuration, router forwarding or firewall rules; it only provides a name-to-service mapping. Keep the selected port open for both TCP and UDP as required by the server setup.
Home hosting or a VPS?

The official documentation names AWS, Linode and DigitalOcean as examples of cloud or dedicated-server providers. The important distinction is operational: a VPS removes home-router forwarding, not firewall configuration. You still open the selected port in the provider controls and on the server itself.
When home hosting is practical
Choose home hosting when the server computer can stay powered on, your internet service permits inbound connections, and you are comfortable exposing the household public IP. A stable local address and a correctly scoped firewall rule are essential.

When a remote host is preferable
A VPS is useful when you need a server that remains online while your desktop is off, cannot configure inbound forwarding, or prefer not to expose a residential address. Budget and system administration become part of the decision, and the provider’s firewall panel must be configured before testing.

Work from the server outward rather than changing several settings at once. The following checks cover the failure modes identified in the setup guidance.

1. Confirm that a game is actually being hosted
At the server console, run the host command with a valid map. A running Java process that has not started a game may not accept the join attempt you are testing.
2. Verify the active port
config portWrite down the value returned. Compare it with the port in the router rule, host firewall, cloud firewall and the client’s address:port entry. Do not assume that a previous 6567 rule remains correct after changing the configuration.
3. Check both protocols
Confirm that TCP and UDP are allowed at every firewall layer that applies. A rule limited to TCP, or a router entry that forwards only one protocol, does not satisfy the Mindustry Wiki’s requirement.
4. Check home NAT and the destination address
For home hosting, confirm that the router’s rule points to the server computer’s current local IP. Test from a device outside the home network; testing the public address from inside the same LAN can fail on routers that do not support NAT loopback even when outside players would connect successfully.

On a VPS, inspect the provider firewall or security-group rule as well as the operating-system firewall. Opening the port in Linux, Windows or another host system is insufficient if the provider blocks the packet before it reaches the machine.
6. Investigate a port conflict
If the server reports that the port is already in use, identify the process holding it. On systems that provide lsof, run:
lsof -i :<port>Replace <port> with the configured value. Stop the stale process only after confirming that it is safe to terminate; it may be another service you still need. Then restart Mindustry and verify the port again.
7. Confirm the address players entered
Make sure players use the public address for a home server or the remote host’s public address for a VPS, followed by the selected port. A private address such as 192.168.x.x is normally usable only inside the same local network.

- Expose only the port required for the server, and remove old forwarding or firewall rules when you stop using a port.
- Keep the dedicated-server software, Java runtime and operating system maintained according to their release guidance.
- Use a stable local IP reservation rather than forwarding to a device whose address changes frequently.
- Remember that publishing a home server’s public IP reveals your residential network endpoint to players. The Mindustry Wiki suggests a VPN or a webhost/cloud service as alternatives when that exposure is unacceptable.
- Document the chosen port, the server computer’s local address and the router rule so you can recover after replacing hardware or resetting the router.
Quick configuration checklist
- Start the dedicated server and run
config port. - Leave 6567 in place unless you have a reason to change it; if changing it, run
config port <new-port>and verify withconfig port. - Use
host <mapname> [mode]to start an active game. - Allow the selected number over TCP and UDP in the operating-system firewall.
- For home hosting, reserve the server computer’s local IP and forward the selected port for TCP and UDP.
- For a VPS, allow the selected port in the provider firewall as well as the operating-system firewall.
- Tell players to use
<public-ip>:<port>through Play → Join Game → Add Server. - If connection fails, compare the active console value with every network rule, verify that a map is hosted, and check for a process already using the port with
lsof -i :<port>.
Bottom line
Use port 6567 unless you need another value. The reliable setup is one verified Mindustry port, permitted for both TCP and UDP, forwarded to a stable local IP when hosting at home, and opened in every applicable firewall. Players then connect with the matching public address and port.
